Link: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/... Let's not blame Lerner for the demise of Landover Mall. He is a businessman and not a policeman. Landover Mall became so crime-ridden that shoppers found other places to go and now some people in Prince Georges County are blaming Lerner for not doing more to keep Landover Mall afloat.

Agreed. Now the St Charles Towne Center is turning into the new Landover. I won't let my wife go there at night. CCSO is doing a good job but it is only a matter of time before it is runied just like Landover was.

Too many menacing youth scared off other shoppers. There were stabbings in the parking lot there. There was a hostile environment there.
The menacing youth were not good customers. They didn't spend much money there. They just loitered and scared away legitimate customers.

Ya, they tore Landover Mall down. Sad to see it happen, but, too many stores closed, and too many unsavory people scared away shoppers.

Like others have said, the thugs and the crime that once went to Landover Mall and Iverson Mall are now moving down to Southern Maryland and infesting St. Charles Towne Center. More reason why I do my shopping at Annapolis Mall. I am sure there will be politically correct people who will deny this problem. It is amazing how much nicer it is in the Annapolis area and Northern VA than in Waldorf isn't it? It is really sad what has happened to the Waldorf area.

There are some other sites where people talk about how Lerner let Landover Mall deteriorate, and didn't recruit high end stores. And they said that Lerner did not provide adequate security at the mall.
But, since the area devolved into a bad neighborhood, Lerner could have done all of those things and good customers would still have been afraid to go there.

I used to like Landover Mall. But it's true, the youth gangs intimidated everyone and created a bad environment. And there was crime there too.

I remember the first and only time me and my children went there back in 2000 I believe it was.. I parked the car, looked around, started the car right back up and got the hell out of there!! No amount of adequate security in the mall or outside of it would of changed my mind on that decision.. Money spent for improvements or high end stores opening up there wouldn't of changed the atmosphere of the surrounding area.. Lerner was smart to let it go!!
Agree on the St. Charles Towne Center comments, it is going down hill fast as well... Rarely go anymore myself and when I do it is usually to go to Sears only. Sure doesn't take long for trouble to find and invade decent areas these days :(

It was sad to see Landover Mall go downhill, but the neighborhood became a bad neighborhood. Who wants to go shopping where the youth gangs are always hanging out?

It was in a bad neighborhood, and the gangs hung out there. Who wants to shop in a gang infested place. The gangs forced the mall out of business, not Lerner.
