A rating system for nursing homes might help improve things slightly, but for the most part it is useless. Since most people go to nursing homes from hospitals, they and their families don't have time to check out these facilities. Case managers and discharge planners in hospitals don't have the time nor the inclination to check out these ratings. Many case managers will send a hospital patient to a nursing home regardless of quality just to get them out of a hospital bed.
The other problem with the rating system is that it is based on State Health Department inspections. Since these agencies do such a horrendous job surveying facilities, a rating system can't possibly give a true picture of the quality of care. Find out more at www.myelderadvocateblog.com .
