It's a LONG ugly story.

I hired a contractor to build a 2-car garage addition to my house and got royally screwed.

The short version: contractor incompetence led to a one month project lastinf 2 years, a fine from the county ($280.00),$4000,00 in repairs to bring the structure up to code and just recently a roof / gutters repair of $1100 to fix more flaws.

What would you do? I have pretty much written it off as an ugly & costly learning experience. Your thoughts?

Woed of warning. Get references and see contractors finished work BEFORE you hire them. Get an iron clad contract & warranty in detail. Keep al receipts and do not give more than 1/3 of total cost in advance!

MD DLLR, The Better Business Bureau, and even the office in LaPlata that handles contractor issues have all been completelu useless.

We are getting an inground vinyl liner pool installed by this terrible company whom I would never recommend to my worst enemy! They started the project 7 weeks ago and promised a June 17th date to be done. They still have so much more to do. They lie right to your face and say "I'll be there tomorrow or this day etc. and don't show up for at least a week! We call them every day and they don't answer the calls and never return calls when we leave a message. They have no regard what so ever for anything that we say to them. They just continue to lie to us and expect us to be OK with this. Is there anything that we can do to get this done. At this rate we won't have the pool done until next summer!!!

If they are licesnsed in MD - you can contact the DLLR in MD or the permit office in LaPlata (if you're in Charles County.) Things I learned:
#1 find a reference before you hire someone.
#2 make it clear to the contractor the contract is to be followed to the letter - and you will follow what they are doing very clsely.
#3 Keep all you receipts - any complaint you need to file will require them.

I've heard Angie's List is a good place to look
at contractor rerviews - but it's a pay site and I don't want to pay if I don't know for sure that companies I'm looking at are listed or not.

Good luck with your nightmare. I just spent another $1100 fixing the roof on my NEW garage from sloppy work done by the idiot I hired.

We hired a contractor to do a major kitchen Reno. He came recommended and we checked one of his references... From the beginning, things didn't go well, and we are now8 weeks overdue. He hides everything, including horribly amature electrical work. We are now afraid because we have uncovered too many of his incompetent and lazy way of doing things. He has used and distroyed our brand new shop vac, is replacing the floor for the fourth time, cuts corners and works without any permits... We want to fire him and restart ourselves but are afraid we have to give him the opportunity to make things right? We will be speaking to a lawyer on Monday morning to know what to do next... Any suggestions?
