Having lived in Maine I observed many always looking for a "free handout" ! If it's free they are the first to jump in line.

most goverment handouts go to the wealthy and corporations. but you will only hear about the poor getting handouts. controlled information soo the common man will hate the poor, and unions and the communist like. start a war and right after give the largest tax break to only the very wealthy look at the national deficet your social security future went to Iraq your factories went to china. family values theirs not yours

you can only give tax breaks to people who pay taxes. its hard to give tax breaks to people who don't pay taxes, thats handouts and i would like it if they said thank you once in awhile instead of bitching its not enough.

Good post, river. It's one thing to help someone in need for a short period of time. It's another altogether to support them for life. We are middle class hard working people, in Maine, basically paying for no health insurance (10k deductable - 8k a yr in premiums)but we don't qualify for squat. My bills increase, lunch $ increases every yr for kids, insurance premiums increase 2 x yr, etc. etc. All because we "need" to support them. We get a second job, one they won't work in the first place, to pay for all these increases. It's BS.

I had an acquaintance that decided to stop working one day. He was perfectly healthy and capable of working, but decided to milk the system. His parents had a small cabin they allowed him to use, free of charge, with plenty of wood on the lot to cut for heat. His wife was pregnant with twins (they literally breed like rabbits, wish it wasn't true), so he decides to stop working and apply for everything he can get his hands on. Our Social Services sets him and family up with an apartment close to town, food stamps, free heat and probably more that I'm not aware of. He sat around and was getting fat from lack of ambition, and the apartment was a royal mess due to no cleaning on his and his wifes part.

It didn't take me long to lose this person as an acquaintance and move on. I even put my reputation on the line for him by getting him a job with the outfit I work for. He didn't last a month before getting fired for lack of ambition. After that, I decided he didn't need, want or deserve my help anymore.

I wouldn't be surprised if he's still living in the same apartment, or had to move to a better apartment after trashing that one at our expense. This is a 100% true story, I wish it wasn't.

Sadly- that story is more and more the norm with our system the way it is.

I know, Betty. I still find it hard to believe how easy it was for him, and he lived better through welfare than he did working for a living.

I have nothing against somebody getting a helping hand when they are trying, but this guy refused to try. Look at what he's teaching his kids. He and his wife were up to four children the last I knew and working hard for more. Their excuse for having so many children was that the Bible tells them to "be fruitful and multiply." When he said that I had to leave fast before I lost my temper any worse and got into a fight.

Be fruitful and multiply. Ha - he forgot about taking care of your own. Surely there must be something in the Bible that states not to be lazy, no good, drain the resources, teach your kids nothing types of parents - or else do not multiply!

Curt, turn him in? Are you kidding me? The State gave him everything he could ask for and more, eagerly. It was right there waiting for him to take, and he did. He may be a loser, but he was within his rights to take what they were giving.

Don't get me wrong Curt, I'm not upset at you, I'm upset at the way our welfare is handed out to the people who don't want to work, by their own choice. There are hundreds of them, possibly thousands right here in our state.

How about "brown-bagging it". When I grew up, my mom used to make lunches for all three of us kids.
We didnt rely on our school to feed us for free.
Isnt that the responsibility of the parents?
Dont have kids if you can afford to feed them.
Sooo manu free-loaders waiting to jump on the train! The govt. needs to eliminate these subsidised programs. If the parents can afford the cafeteria lunches, fine. If not, brown bag it.
Its also unfair how the middle class kids pay $4.00 TO $5.00 a day for cafetria lunches and the free loaders get to feed their spawn for free or for under $1.00. This needs to stop.

I work as a school bus driver in a small southern maine coastal community. I pay 4.50 a day for meals for my child, yet you will see more than half of the school student body on FREE breakfast/lunch programs. The real kicker is that some of these kids come from well off families, that own local business'. How do they manage this scam.....the parents claim they don't draw a paycheck from their business so they meet the guidelines for these programs. Also I am so upset at Maine for handing over everything a teen girl could dream of when she unexplainably becomes pregnant. apartment, heat, phone, electricity, medical, dental, food, and a nice little check for an allowance... what a deal...why didn't my parents teach me how to do than instead of being an able bodied, honest, hardworking individual, who is proud of supporting themselves....
