Fatboy's to open large eatery

There are 41 comments on the The Honolulu Advertiser story from Jan 23, 2008, titled Fatboy's to open large eatery. In it, The Honolulu Advertiser reports that:

“I consider my food as more of a quality plate lunch with a little upscale gourmet twist to it. I didn't feel like anybody there was serving my type of food at my price range, so I felt it might be my chance for me to have success there.”

Excellent plate lunch place in Kailua, right on corner across the street from Starbucks (same row as Formaggio's, Aaron's Dive Shop). Used to be off Nimitz. Very tasty, good selection, good-sized portions, and reasonable prices. My only complaint is that they charge $1.50 extra if you want brown rice (instead of white). Garlic chicken is very popular.

I tried Poke Stop in Waipahu the other day. Also very good, but outdoor seating is way too windy. Had to retreat to my car to finish my meal.

Come on, you don't remember the Fatboys? Rap group from the 80's that did duets with the Beach Boys and Chubby Checker! Then they were in a movie with Ralph Bellamy called "Disorderlies!" Aw man, I can't believe you don't remember the Fatboys!

I must say...I hate teri-everything and most local caterers; they all taste like reheated Zippy's food (HK Drive-In the sole exception).

But these guys got something going on. If you eat their food someplace, it is likely you will ask where'd this come from. They make "basic" stuff somewhat memorable, at least insofar as teri beef and chicken katsu can be.

There's a small shop on the edge of Mililani, closest to Wahiawa...literally the last part of civilization, such as it is given that its Mililani's ghetto, that has killer poke.

They have an interesting pipikaula poke.

Best spicy ahi is still Safeway though.

Still haven't tried FatBoys yet, but as I was going to Costco in Waipio, there was a grand opening celebration going on there. It's located on the west side of Costco.

We went to the Kailua location at least 3 times a week for lunch or dinner. Some days for both. And for parties, we always bought gralic chicken pans from them.

The food is Great...but the service SUCKS! By that I mean the worker, whom later ID herself as the owner, "RARIO", is the most unprofessional "customer service" employee EVER!

Although she see's us again and again and again, she never says hello or thank you.

Don't even think about telling them that there is something wrong with the food (cold, wrong order, etc.) because she'll bitch you out and tell you she don't need your business.

We will never go back, and neither will our baseball teams, church group, fight club, business network, and hopefully you. Unless you want that kind of (lack-of) service.

They also have joint by Costco in Waipio. There are noticeably better than most plate lunch places and not too expensive.

I was at a catered event where they brought in teri-beef, which is about as pedestrian and blase as you can get. But for once in my life I actually tasted good teri-beef, enough to prompt me to ask where it came from.

If the average local plate lunch place is a 5, I'd give these guys a 6.5..maybe 7 on a good day. They're worth checking out once or twice, methinks.
