we don't need a new deal
we need the law to change allowing foreign (ships)flags to drive up competition and keep cost low in this already poor state...
Its about time...

Tama., You sound like a concerned citizen...write the Mayor...I guarantee you he will write back to you. I wrote him about the tearing down of the International Market Place and he wrote back with a lengthy E-Mail answering my questions. Don't give up.

Tama needs to go to sleep.

Matson should have let the union workers strike!!!!!!!!
#5 Jun 28, 2009
Unions have become devious predatory organizations who strike when the public is most vulnerable. Oh, you say they didn't actually strike? Where do you think that word came from? They struck with a picket line and threat of worse. They are greedy bastards who send their kids to schools where the teachers, who contribute ten times what they do to society, lack the funds to teach the kids of these union thugs. But hey, school is just someplace to send a kid to learn how to be a lower level predator like your daddy and probably your free loading mommy too.

Just gotta open up the bidding process to outside shipping companies...there's 30 other shipping companies more than willing to do biz with Hawaii.

#10 Jun 28, 2009
They did strike.

I say we open up Hawaii's shipping business to the many other shipping companies out there. Make it a competitive transport biz like Hawaiian Air and Go! airlines.
Don't be fooled into believing Matson is the only player out there... There's literally 30 to 40 shipping companies.
There's Paragon shipping, Star Bulk Carriers, Excel Maritime Carriers, Safe Bulkers Inc., Dry Ships Inc., and Horizon Lines just to name a few of the many shipping companies more than willing to bid for Hawaii's shipping business.

competition would be nice, but the security of foreign ships would worry me. i'd be concerned that things get smuggled into our country or people illegally staying here.
a better solution would be to get rid of the stevedore unions.
on another note, it would have been nice to have known that costco mostly uses horizon.

What a relief to know that the strike was quickly setteld. Now we all can look forward to more increases other than taxes and fees. Get ready to pay more for goods coming from all points outside of Hawaii. Matson had no problem giving in to any increases the unions requested, after all - Matson will just tack on the cost to companies using their services and in turn, those using Matson's services will pass along the increased cost to - of course - the people of Hawaii. I guess when it rain, it pours.

You named 4 shipping companies that specialize in dry bulk services. Hawaii relies on containerized freight carriers, unless you want rice by the shipload. The fifth was Horizon, who already provides containerized freight service to Hawaii ( with Union crews). You don't know what you are talking about.
I don't know by what name you addressed me , but it was sensored.

Nice copy and paste job. The first company on your list owns Matson. Then UPS? Marthas vinyard steamship? World courier group? United Carrier Group? Traffic Management? Ultrapetrol? The Baltic Exchange? TOP Ships Inc? Attica Group? Allstates WorldCargo? Aramex PJSC? you've got to be kidding! Maybe you can have all your TP and rice delivered by UPS. Still not sure by what name you are addressing me. Keep posting, you're proving yourself ignorant with each word you type.

Oh no! Im beyond concearn, Im sick and tired of being lied to and tax on to no end.
So why should I write him again? So he can go on his long blah blah that at the end you left even more confuse and frustrated. Because what he says does not add up to what I see in my wallet
The only way he will listen is to speak up at the voting booth. Other than that its a waste of time trying to write or call him...
He should be out of office by the end of next year. Remember he narrowly made it as a mayor but so far he has done nothing but raising tax over locals who are already suffering from unemployment and furloughs.
If he is raising tax in the city and county already what will he do when he tax the whole state when he runs for governor?

Just write to Annies Mailbox, she has about the same authority over shipping as Mufi does.
