New documents show extensive N.J. coverup
By Philip Rucker
January 10, 2014

Excerpt:
New documents related to a traffic jam planned by a member of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s (R) staff show for the first time how furiously Christie’s lieutenants inside the Port Authority worked to orchestrate a coverup after traffic mayhem engulfed Fort Lee last year.

Inside the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, Christie’s top appointees neglected furious complaints from Fort Lee’s police chief as well as from angry rush-hour commuters. One woman called asking why the agency was “playing God with people’s jobs.”

The Republican governor’s appointees instructed subordinates to stonewall reporters who were asking questions. They even ordered up an actual “traffic study” to chronicle the impact and examine whether closing the lanes permanently might improve traffic flow. The study’s conclusion:“TBD.”

The newly released e-mails do not appear to implicate Christie directly, but they shed new light on the lane closures that rocked the political world this week and threaten the likely Republican presidential candidate’s political future.

A cursory review of hundreds of pages of e-mails and internal documents released Friday afternoon show that:

After concerns were raised, Bill Baroni, a now-former top Christie appointee on the Port Authority, told his colleague Patrick Foye, an appointee of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D), that there should be “be no public discourse” about the situation. Foye responded incredulously, saying,“Bill that’s precisely the problem: there has been no public discourse on this.” Foye added that the “fiasco” needed to be fixed.

Once the media were on the case, Baroni repeatedly asked a spokesman for the Port Authority, Steve Coleman, to ignore media requests and/or not comment.

Fort Lee, N.J., Mayor Mark Sokolich (D) informed the Port Authority on Sept. 10 — the day after the lane closures took effect — that emergency responders in one case were forced to abandon their vehicle and respond to a call “on foot” due to traffic.

In the days and weeks to come, inquiries from elected officials were neglected and questions from reporters were unanswered. The newly released e-mails show that a turf battle took over between Christie’s appointees and Foye and others installed by Cuomo, whose suspicions were growing.

According to the documents, after four straight days of lane closures, Foye, the Port Authority’s executive director and an appointee of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D), e-mailed senior Port Authority officials to say he was “appalled” by the “dangers created to the public interest.” Foye said he believed the “hasty and ill-advised decision” may have violated federal and state law and ordered the lanes reopened immediately

Twenty minutes later, at 8:04 a.m., traffic was restored to all three lanes, and Fort Lee’s week-long nightmare was over.

Christie Doc: Cops Told People Bridge Closures Were Fort Lee Mayor’s Fault
ERIC LACH
JANUARY 10, 2014
http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/sokolic...

In a letter to a Port Authority executive on Sept. 12, Fort Lee, N.J. Mayor Mark Sokolich complained that the agency’s police officers were telling commuters that the George Washington Bridge lane closings were his fault.

“[M]any members of the public have indicated to me that the Port Authority Police Officers are advising commuters in response to their complaints that this recent traffic debacle is the result of a decision that I, as the Mayor, recently made,” Sokolich wrote to Bill Baroni, who was the deputy executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey until he resigned last month.

The letter was among the thousands of pages of documents released Friday by a New Jersey legislative committee that has been investigating the incident. The lane closings, which began Sept. 9, led to a massive, multi-day traffic jam in Fort Lee. Democrats in the state have for months alleged that the lanes were closed as retaliation against Sokolich, a Democrat, who declined to endorse Christie’s re-election bid last year. The released documents include communications tying the administration of Gov. Chris Christie (R) to the decision to close the lanes.

In his letter on Sept. 12, Sokolich wrote that he had been “incessantly” attempting to contact Port Authority officials “to no avail.”

“I am writing this correspondence to you and am refraining from copying any other party in the hopes that a recent decision by the Port Authority will be reversed quietly, uneventfully and without political fanfare,” Sokolich wrote.

Baroni, who was appointed to the Port Authority by Christie, has testified that the lanes on the bridge were closed as the result of a traffic study.

There are so many other mini-scandals that he managed to “manage”. For instance:

‘In 2002, driving a rented BMW Sedan, U.S. Attorney Christie injured a motorcyclist when he tried to turn the wrong way onto a one-way street. He was not issued a traffic ticket, despite his less-than-stellar driving record, which includes at least six accidents and 13 moving violations.’
or:
‘As New Jersey attempted to shovel its way out of 31 inches of snow in December 2010, Christie remained on vacation in sunny Florida, leaving others to deal with the mess in his state. Christie’s lieutenant governor, Kim Guadagno, was away too—in Mexico—so New Jersey residents were pretty much on their own.’
or
‘As U.S. attorney, Christie settled a probe into kickbacks by knee and hip replacement manufacturers for a cool $311 million. Christie selected former Attorney General John Ashcroft, his old boss, to monitor the manufacturers, for which Ashcroft’s D.C.-based consulting firm received $52 million of the settlement.”

From the Wall Street Journal:

"Mr. Christie complained in a private phone call to Mr. Cuomo on December 12th that Patrick Foye, the executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, was pressing too hard to get to the bottom of why the number of toll lanes onto the bridge from Fort Lee, N.J. was cut from three to one in early September, according to this person. The lane closures occurred without notice to local authorities, officials have said, and snarled traffic for a week in the small borough on the Hudson River bluffs."

Exactly. Until this connection is made I will hold him harmless. The FACT that he never asked for the Mayor's endorsement in any way, AND the Mayor himself that was affected by this declared that he was NEVER approached by anyone representing Christi, nor Christi himself, says to me that this is a setup by obama, Clinton, the NSA, etc.

The fact that Christi was all set to announce his run for President on January 16th strongly suggests that this has been perfectly timed by the left. They did that to several of them like Herman Cain, etc. Typical.

Let's see the documents that implicate Christ. Until then, this is just a distraction. The people he fired would certainly defend themselves if they could. Unless they implicate Christi he is not guilty. Sounds more like a bad judgement by them for whatever reason.

POLITICO???? that is a left wing hack job POS newspaper. haha...you had me going there for a minute.

Let's see the EVIDENCE that Christi did this. Don't tell us about a snowstorm years ago as the reason Christi is a bad guy. He prosecuted hundreds of criminals over many years for stuff like this.

Let's see the evidence that says Christi had anything to do with this. You haven't done any of that in here...just a bunch of gunnysack BS that has nothing to do with him. If something comes out then he is toast. Otherwise quit falling for the oldest trick in the political playbook.

Besides, none of this compares to What difference does it make!!!" Clinton on Benghazi. She even admitted that her actions were based on politics NOT on saving our troops there or in Iraq, etc. That came out last week. Google it if you want to argue about it, it was all over the news. But you won't because you what kind of idiot she is.

Chris Christie Facing Federal Investigation Over Sandy Funds: Frank Pallone
The Huffington Post
By Luke Johnson
Posted: 01/13/2014 9:22 am
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/01/13/chri...

Excerpt:
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) is facing a federal investigation into whether the governor used Hurricane Sandy relief money to produce tourism ads starring himself and his family, Rep. Frank Pallone (D-N.J) told CNN Sunday. The New Jersey lawmaker said the inspector general for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development conducted a preliminary investigation, and concluded that a full investigation is warranted.

The investigation comes as the New Jersey governor is facing a separate federal probe into revelations that his top aides engineered the temporary shutdown of access lanes to the George Washington Bridge as political retribution.

Pallone wrote a letter to the inspector general of the Department of Housing and Urban Development in August, asking why a firm with a more expensive pitch won the project to make a New Jersey tourism campaign with Hurricane Sandy relief funds. The winning firm’s bid was $4.7 million, while a comparable firm cost $2.5 million. The more expensive firm included the Chrisities, while the cheaper firm did not.

Is the Chris Christie bridge scandal an extension of the governor’s ‘culture’?
By Jenna Portnoy/The Star-Ledger
on January 12, 2014
http://www.nj.com/politics/index.ssf/2014/01/...

Excerpt:
TRENTON — There are lots of time-honored ways for powerful elected officials to punish other elected officials in New Jersey.

Make sure a pending bill disappears off the board. Erase a line item in the budget. Put a patronage hire out to pasture.

But those actions, as correspondence showed last week, seem to have been far too pedestrian for people close to Gov. Chris Christie.

Based on the release of internal documents, a circle of Christie staff and allies appears to have taken political retribution to a new level when it conspired to send the borough of Fort Lee into traffic chaos by closing lanes to the world’s busiest bridge — and then covered it up, say Democrats and political observers.

These documents, they say, put on full display a pettiness and arrogance that comes straight from the top. Whether Christie gave a direct order, or whether the staffers were doing as they thought Christie would do, hardly matters, they say.

“It just goes to the atmosphere, the environment and the culture that the governor has perpetuated over the last four years,” said Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg (D-Bergen), who represents the borough at the center of the biggest debacle of Christie’s political life.

“The governor stands up at a press conference and calls the Senate Democrats animals,” she said, citing one of his favorite insults.“It is rude, it is inappropriate, it is not respectful and it adds to the culture that the governor seems to enjoy that anything goes.”

Weinberg was on the receiving end of Christie’s vitriol back in April 2011 when he encouraged reporters “to take the bat out on her.”

But Christie booster and former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour defended his friend, saying such criticism is unfair and that the governor is “effusive and enthusiastic.”

“I’ve always seen that. He’s got a lot of personality, and he is effusive,” said Barbour.“A lot of Republicans didn’t like that when Obama came to visit.”

Weinberg says when Christie personally attacks his political foes, it sends one message to voters: It’s okay for you, too.

“We can all do whatever we feel like doing. We can call people names. We can use pejorative language against people who were elected to office, just like he has,” she said.

E-mails released Thursday show Christie’s two-time campaign manager Bill Stepien derided the Fort Lee mayor as an idiot, the same label the governor lobbed at a Navy SEAL during a 2012 town hall.(Christie later came close to an apology over the remark in an interview with Esquire.)

Spokesman’s language

Christie’s longtime press secretary Michael Drewniak routinely channels his boss’s invective. E-mails included in the documents released Friday show he’s just as indelicate when referring to the press. Discussing a request for a comment from a reporter, Drewniak wrote,“(Expletive) him and the (Star-Ledger).” Drewniak, a former Star-Ledger reporter, called a different reporter “a (expletive) mutt.”

Here Are All of the Chris Christie Bridgegate Documents
by Tommy Christopher
January 12th, 2014
http://www.mediaite.com/online/here-are-all-o...

Excerpt:
The seemingly impossible political retribution scheme involving lane closures to the George Washington Bridge, from the City of Fort Lee, broke wide open on Wednesday with the release of subpoenaed documents, morphing into what we now know as “Bridgegate,” a scandal that reaches directly into Governor Chris Christie‘s (R-NJ) office. On Friday, the New Jersey Legislature released hundreds more pages of documents. The new documents shed more light on the specifics of the plan to shut down toll lanes onto the GWB, and just how cognizant the principles in this story were of the intense concern the chaos it generated. They also provide a peek inside the mechanics of media stonewalling.

The documents don’t contain a smoking gun implicating Christie in the plot, but do place the ensuing coverup a step closer to Christie. Emails show that Regina Egea, Christie’s incoming Chief of Staff, was notified of the brouhaha as early as September 13.

There is one detail from these emails that has no bearing on the substance of the story, but which could come to be a prophetic coincidence, if it hasn’t already. A series of emails from a Port Authority traffic engineer is appended with the public service message “One Text or Call Could Wreck it All.”

"There's also the notion that Christie is bipartisan. And there is plenty of evidence to the contrary."

Excerpt:
"Christie's budgets cut social and economic programs. He included $500 million in cuts to education that the New Jersey Supreme Court ruled unconstitutional. The harm being visited is not some minor infringement of the constitutional right but a real, substantial and consequential blow to the achievement of a thorough and efficient system of education" in the state’s 31 poorest school systems, wrote Justice Jaynee LaVecchia, a Republican appointee, in the majority decision."

"Christie's budget also eliminated after-school education for more than 15,000 low-income children and cut $21 million in elderly health services. Using the word bipartisan to describe Christie is highly misleading with his work with the legislature. He vetoed more than 150 bills passed by his Democratic-led Legislature. His vetoes blocked bills to allow marriage equality, raise the minimum wage and increase taxes on those making more than $1 million a year. He also twice vetoed a bill to make financing easier for consumers to rent or buy foreclosed properties as affordable housing."

“Gov. Christie’s pension issue: N.J. probe looks at running mate, double-dipping

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie — a rising star in the national Republican Party — called an overhaul of the state pension system his “biggest governmental victory.” He now faces embarrassment from flaws his reforms failed to fix.

The sweeping new laws increase contributions from public workers, decrease benefits and halt cost-of-living hikes. According to Christie, the changes should save the state $120 billion over the next 30 years.
But his reform did little to stop the age-old New Jersey practice of double-dipping, in which employees “retire,” start collecting a pension, and then are rehired, often the next day. Christie’s own deputy chief of staff collects $219,000 a year from the state — a $130,000 salary as a top aide to the governor plus $89,000 in state pension.
Worse for Christie, a criminal investigation is under way involving his running mate, New Jersey Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno.”

Christie, Official Who Arranged Bridge Closures Were Together During Fiasco
By Ted Mann
1/14/14
http://blogs.wsj.com/metropolis/2014/01/14/ch...

Excerpt:
Gov. Chris Christie was with the official who arranged the closure of local lanes leading to the George Washington Bridge on Sept. 11, 2013 — the third day of the closures, and well after they had triggered outrage from local officials beset by heavy traffic.

It isn’t known what, if anything, Mr. Christie discussed with David Wildstein that day, when the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey official was among the delegation of Mr. Christie’s representatives who welcomed him to the site of the World Trade Center for the commemoration of the 12th anniversary of the terrorist attacks there.

Mr. Christie’s office didn’t respond to questions about what he and Mr. Wildstein discussed. Mr. Wildstein did not respond to a request for comment.

Also present with Mr. Christie that day were Bill Baroni, the authority’s deputy executive director, who was helping Mr. Wildstein manage the fallout from the closures among local officials, subpoenaed documents show. Also there was David Samson, the Port Authority chairman and close Christie ally, who has said he didn’t learn of the lane closures and traffic in Fort Lee, N.J., until an email from a New York port official ordered the lane closures reversed. Messrs. Samson and Baroni didn’t respond to requests for comment.

Mr. Christie addressed Mr. Wildstein in a news conference last week, saying he had not encountered him “in a long time.”

“I have had no contact with David Wildstein in a long time, a long time, well before the election,” which was held Nov. 5, Mr. Christie said last week.“You know, I could probably count on one hand the number of conversations I’ve had with David since he worked at the Port Authority. I did not interact with David.”
