Congratulations!!! The state of Hawaii should be happy in these economic times. States' share will be about $195,000.00 (8 percent), Lingle should present her with a "Certificate of Apppreciation".

To alice...
After about 38% in state and federal taxes remainder is about $1,477,609. I guess according to you that is not much money. You must be a millionaire.

Well, she will have to be paying taxes on her income from this each year. I also udnerstand she gets her payment over 20 years. hardly worth it. Boyd gaming flatters themselves and pushes the one winner out of thousands of losers so as to get more suckers to go to vegas.

Hey Alice & all the other negative posts--

Even if it's spread out over 20 years, it's still better money than she would make babysitting!

She'll be taxed annually on the amount she receives annually, so it may be less than the 38% someone else mentioned.

If she's smart, she'll be visiting a financial advisor Monday morning & set it up so she won't get hit with so much tax.

Worst case, even after taxes, she'll probably walk away with about $75,000.00 a year free & clear. Would you turn that down??? I sure wouldn't!!!

Alice, is it the custom these days to put marriage offers in sealed envelopes? You're smart to not open the marriage offers until the envelope includes a photocopy of the guy's UH diploma. There are many guys out there so marry a college graduate. It's no guarantee but you'll have a greater chance of marrying someone financially stable if the guy has a degree.

But really though, I don't believe you have two marriage offers on your desk. Doesn't sound believable.

Oh, and I still think you should take some business and economics classes at UH to give you the basics in finance. From your comments, you really could use some education in finance.

And when you start earning some money some day, you should do your own taxes instead of buying Turbo Tax or some other tax software so that you will know how taxes are calculated and how it affects you. Just because you won't be earning a lot of money majoring in Asian Studies doesn't mean that you shouldn't know about taxes, finance and economics.

If it's unopened how do you know what it is? Maybe it's a proposition not a proposal

Thanks realmerv...you are always helpful. I never said the woman would not approeciate her annual winnings. I just said that her actual take home money was much less than the story in the paper (which is just a PR release from Boyd Gaming to encourage more hawaii folks to go lose money in vegas) implied. Only one in 90,000 win that kind of money.

I have left the two envelopes unopened!
