The Speed of the Super Ferry is a danger to Whales?

Than can some of you protester's get out there and start protesting those Whale Watch Boats that hit Whales all the time and they are hardly moving. They advertise,"Guarantee to see a Whale or your money back" I know 2 people who said the boat they were on hit a whale. Not to mention the little boy who died from a LOW SPEED BOAT hitting a Whale.

So Greg Kaufman of Pacific Whale Foundation, while you are at it, TELL EVERYONE HOW MANY SLOW MOVING BOATS, BARGES, SHIPS ALSO HIT WHALE'S? You are going to have a long list. Then that should keep you busy keeping everyone out of the water.

How fast was the Pacific Whale Foundations boat traveling when it hit a whale? What happened to that whale, or whales?

How awful that so many are being held hostage by so few. The whales are here for just a few months. What is your excuse for the rest of the time? It seems you jump from one excuse to another, when one doesn't work. You are really getting tiresome. It is totally unfair to single out one company for this. According the reports, they do have advanced sonar warning. Maybe you should watch National Geographic on Thursday am and see what you can learn about the Superferry. They only come to the island once a day. It is time you get over yourselves. This is so self serving.

I believe TheBoat travels nearly as fast and under a far more frequent schedule. Under this logic, it needs to be dismantled as fast as possible. Why are there zero protestors out there?

Let's check the score! Have you hit any whales lately?

Pacific Whale Foundation = YES

Superferry = NO.

And then comes the real men of genius conclusion:

Big fast ships hurt more than small slow ships.

Don't need them, it seems to be taking care of itself.
Two days in, it's already broken down. The city's bought a lemon.
Which means it's about as well built as the city street system, so I guess that's just business as usual around here.

"My bigger and broader concern on this issue right now is the future well-being of a sense of community in our state," Lingle said. "This is giving us a very bad reputation."

The arrogance of Lingle and the superferry in defiance of the law has initiated a huge rift in any sense of community and they should look to themselves rather than blaming others for the current state of affairs.

Greg Kaufman should do only the right thing and remove his own boats from the water.

Poor whales.

Or is it poor Pacific Whale Foundation? After all, doesn't the Superferry represent another marine activity option for tourists in competition with the for-profit arm of the PWF?

I hope that this super ferry does not get approval and if it does, I hope that it is boycotted by all. I think our whales are a bit more important than getting somewhere in a hurry. We are loosing species right and left...when will people wake up and value wildlife for what it is and not for its mere monetary value?

The Superferry is the fastest ship in Hawaiian waters. The truth speaks for itself. Mr. Kaufman is a highly qualified professional with crdentials to back it up. Do you?

From Sept 2 Hotseat:
Q:Tom McAuliffe: The HSF has forward-looking radar/sonar for whale avoidance. Please discuss your "whale avoidance policy" and how it was developed.

A:Garibaldi: "Our Web site has our whale avoidance policy posted. It has been developed with the cooperation of many whale experts. HSF continues to monitor the availability of forward-looking sonar, which is not currently available."

Not currently available. Apparently Garibaldi hasn't watched National Geographic?

The governor is yet again trying to blow smoke. People are writing letters that they are canceling their vacations here because they are afraid of whats going with the Superferry. LMAO!!!!!!!! Come on! If thats just not another attempt to try and get sympathy from the masses. But people are too smart to let her crys of doom and gloom for our economy get to them. Admit it, you're more concerned about the "INVESTORS", the ones who contributed to your campaign. Sorry governor you put yourself in this mess and its actually quite funny to see her run around like a chicken without a head to save herself and her Superferry.

Hmmm Mr. Kaufman wasn't your so-called "research" banned because of fraud?

Wasn't your "scientific intern" program banned because you charged kids money to work on your dang boats?

Mr. Kaufman didn't you hit an kill a whale and calf just last year going below 10 knots?

Mr. kaufman doesn't the whale watch industry here make over $50 million each year?

Mr. Kaufman don't you run the biggest whale watch operation in the state?

Mr. Kaufman you have a BIG dog in this hunt don't you?

Now it is Mr. Kauffman's company that hit the a whale with school children aboard the vessel. Who is he to speak about hitting whales. Also he was the one fined for approaching whales without a permit while research was going on. Seems to me, Mr Kauffman should listen to what the Ferry has on board to site whales and that they agree that whale season they would go around were the give birth, and do what ever it takes to keep the whales safe. Would be said for this state and the people that don't have money for airline tickets, that there children cannot go and see there families on different islands. Were is the Ohana in this.

The SF does NOT have sonar. Which is why their entire "whale-avoidance" program consists of two pirates on deck with binoculars.

The argument that whale watching boats hit whales too doesn't really carry much weight. If those slow moving boats are hitting whales, how much damage do you think this massive 4-story 40 mph monster is going to do. Quite a bit I imagine.

But the blind will not be satisfied until the SF has a nice long whale kill record. So I say we go ahead and launch it and let the slaughter begin. The sooner we annihilate a thousand whales, the sooner we can get rid of the SF.

I am Hawaii born and Hawaiian, and in favor of the SuperFerry. I remember when the Hyrofoil "Seaflight" was operating between islands, nobody complained then. That thing moved fast. I went on the maiden Voyage to Maui. Looks to me like most of the protesters are probably not even from here, but have nothing better to do than always "save something". The unfortunate consequence of Hawaii, es[ecially Maui and Kaui being taken over by mainland rich people with no real jobs. And why haven't the protesters been called to task on the impact their actions have had on probably sentencing hundreds of animals to death with the cancellation of the Coast Guards scheduled trip to the NorthWestern Hawaiian Island for debris removal. Yesterday they said they need to remain here to protect the SuperFerry against protesters. What a joke. I say warn them, then arrest them or run 'em over. I'm born on Oahu, and raised both on O'ahu and Moloka'i. I fish everywhere, and can tell you that many of my friends from Maui and Kauai come to O'ahu to fish, shop, and party. Our halau wants to be able to take our own van and travel to Maui, Kauai, and Hawai'i and save money. This is a good alternative. If the protesters want to really protect the whales, then protest and stop all commercial wale watching, research (because they traumatize the whales), stop all interisland shipping so they are 100% protected, and start growing all your own food. And why stop there, protect the birds. All airline traffic should be curtailed too. Then we'll see how fast all the protesters move back to the mainland. That will only leave a small hui of locals against the Ferry. I beliebve that the majority should rule, not the vocal minority. And who really believes that all this "expert" information out there isn't baised coming from Sierra Club. I have stopped my donations supporting this group. Now if you've invested over 60 years of your life in Hawai'i and have been involved in as many environmental causes and Hawaiian causes as I have over the years, then by all means voice your opinion. Otherwise, I will be suspect of your adgenda.

My credentials are irrelevant. The fact is that Kaufman's boats have hit whales in the past and they certainly will hit whales in the future.

Kaufman, I'm sure, was more than eager to present his "expert" opinion because of what the Superferry represents to the Pacific Whale Foundation: Competition for the tourist dollar.

By the way, Kaufman has spent a lot of time around humpbacks but he doesn't have the education to make him eligible for the title "highly qualified professional." In addition, many of PWF's studies have been questioned by credible whale researchers.

Forgive my lack of knowledge on sonar, but can anyone explain how this forward looking sonar will differ from the sonar that the Navy uses during their operations? I seem to recall protests regarding the Navy's use of sonar during RIMPAC. Does the forward looking sonar have the same impact to maine animals? As I noted, I lack knowledge on this subject and seek enlightend insight and not sarcasim or insults on my lack of knowledge.
Thank you
