I am deeply disappointed in the Board of Education. The State Librarian has been informing them since October 2008 (!) that libraries simply have no fat to cut and that any cuts over 20% would mean libraries needed to be closed.

Unlike the people providing kneejerk, uninformed reactions on this website, the BOE has been informed every step of the way as to what budget cuts for the library system would mean.

Instead of supporting State Librarian Burns in what are heart-breaking decisions for him and the entire library system he leads, the Board of Education is letting him seem the bad guy.

If the Board of Education showed some intelligence and some professionalism, and treated Burns as the professional he is (Kim Coco Iwamoto and Mary Cochran are the worst offenders)
the library system could have been moving forward this entire last month rather than wasting time on a plan the BOE hopes will result in no complaining by constituents.

Well, duh! People in Hawaii love their libraries and NO library can be closed without reactions like that by the woman in Lahaina. No one knows this better than the State employees who work in the library system, and that includes the State Librarian.

This is a tragic and sad situation, and that is why it is simply awful that the BOE lets State Librarian Burns take the blame when there is simply no other way to deal with the budget cuts.

Fact: The library system's budget cuts are approaching 25% over two years. The funding sucked in the first place. Man Up, Board of Education.
