MY SECOND HOME

On one of my visits to Hawaii I was in a van from the airport to my hotel with several tourists. the lady sitting in front of me must have read every tourist book. As we headed for Waikiki she turned to her husband and said; "oh look , the Royal Hawaiian Hotel" pointing towards the hospital. I corrected her telling her it was Tripler Army Hospital. She replied but its painted pink. I couldn't control myself and said;"They must have had the same decorator."

Growing up on Oahu, the "pink" hospital was always a landmark for me,and when I come back home every few years,I look up on the hill and feel at home.

The hospital must be haunted with the ghost of those that suffered at the hands of Tripler's botched surgeries.

Oh, give me a break. The good done at Tripler along with those stationed there during the past and present far outweighs the bad. How about you...can you say the same for yourself?

A couple months ago I was driving up to Tripler for an appointment for my baby. I was baby sitting a friend's four year old girl. When she saw Tripler she exclaimed, "THERE'S THE BUILDING WHERE ALL THE FAIRIES LIVE!"
She was just beside herself that we were going to go there, and did not believe me when I told her it was a hospital and clinic!
So there's another myth. It's pink because fairies live there!

Ok, I have to add that the wonderful surgeons at Tripler saved my life three years ago when my small bowel perforated and I require surgery. I was in the hospital for almost a month. I had nothing but the best care during that very difficult time.
Every hospital experiences tragedies. I am tired of Tripler getting a bad rap. It is an excellent medical facility.

my father died in tripler ...tripler is a army training school for doctors who have to serve the government because the government pays for thier educations so they owe the army a commitment in thier medical fields.......dont get me wrong you have plenty educated doctors who have education in thier field of medicine but plenty other people who are in the military who really lack experience .these doctors think they are making medical descisions that benefit the patient but these decisions can kill as well .my dad was in that piece of crap place for 18 days where they refused to feed him properly and monitor him properly he had to go back to the critical care unit 2 times where he was given one on one emergency critical care he was transfered out of critical then relapsed they want to food tube him we wanted him to have some dignity that tripler is a nightmare ....like get a lawyer and sue those doctors who want to play god with sick peoples the nurses are all take orders from the doctors the doctors are to blame plenty ......im glad my dad is passed on so he doesnt have to suffer from these medical losers .....good they make them have mal-practice insurance cause majority of them have little background s in being ethical medical professional s

Is everything I know a myth? An ongoing episode of Believe it or Not?

Color was chosen to match what the color would be after the surrounding dust was blown onto the hospital.

Hospital was to face the opposite direction until someone started the foundation in the other direction. Back is now where the front was to be.

I served at Tripler as a Medic during Vietnam on ward 15 , neuro surgery 1966, 1967. Saw too many broken necks from people trying to body surf while visiting on R&R from Vietnam. Was a great place to serve my country in the military.

Haunted....

Not a rabid believer, but back in '85 had an appt there, opted for the ramp inside vs the elevator,(hate elevators), got halfway up it and literally had to turn around and take the stairs. What a creepy feeling. Broad daylight, no one else in the hallway...wow...too creepy.

That's BULL. It was pink-colored so it would stand out as Off Limits to enemy bombers.

This poster and the first poster are both perhaps correct.
One story is that the Royal Hawaiian color scheme was chosen because a lot of GI did R&R in Waikiki at the RHH.
The other story is exactly the red dirt reason.
Either way, you could tell a story about how it used to BE white, but...

We may never know why it's pink, so don't ask. Or, if you do know, don't tell.

Well, not "exactly" why it's pink. There were multiple reasons. The color was meant to blend in with the dirt (it didn't) it was the color of some hotel in Waikiki (first reason) and enemy planes could tell it is a hospital.
