President Bush signed a law on May 3, 2008, adding felony-level penalties for activities promoting or encouraging animal fighting. The Animal Fighting Prohibition Act of 2007 also made it a felony to knowingly sponsor or exhibit an animal fight, or to buy, sell or transport knives, gaffs and other weapons used in cockfighting. No longer can Hawaii turn a blind eye to this crime. And yet………
Our Honolulu City Council awarded Pat Royos, a proud member of the Hawaii Gamebreeders Association, who lobbies against legislation that would make cockfighting a felony in Hawaii, a $60,000 contract to assist taxpayers with rooster complaints.
Cockfighting, also known as "cocking," is a bloodsport that dates to colonial times in the United States and has offered gamblers a venue for betting around the world . Royos is also an advocate of allowing people to breed roosters as “part of an ancient tradition”. Maybe this is why my phone calls to the Royos to report crowing roosters being raised in backyards for cockfighting have gone unanswered? Maybe it is because I live in Kalihi?
For police responding to rooster calls, an officer must wait outside to verify 10 minutes of continuous crowing or 30 minutes of intermittent crowing, to establish an animal nuisance offense, for this reason it would make sense to have an organization that would actively assist residents with such complaints. Shame on the City Council of Honolulu for wasting $60,000 to pay for an organization that fails to respond with integrity to assist taxpayers. Shame on the City Council for hiring such a biased agenda based organization in the first place.

Is crowing a hormone driven habit? When I once had poultry type hens, I noticed that they cackled at every second of motion, even after I caught them and picked them up. The gamecock breed on the other had gets very silent and when chased or cornered, they get silent as they try to escape for cover. I notice that they crow if well fed the night earlier. If wet during crowing, they don't crow. Can their crowing be hormoned out?
