Waianae High recalls yearbooks containing racial slur - Hawaii ...

Hundreds of Waianae High School yearbooks are being recalled to replace a page with a photograph of what school officials call a "racially offensive" word spelled out in cards held by five students in the senior class on football field bleachers. Full Story

The five students should be prosecuted under the hate crime law to the fullest extent of the law. Just denying them to walk during graduation is a joke. They should not only be suspended but their diplomas should be held up until they complete a summer school class on racial diversity and is mandated to do community service working with a diverse group of individuals esp. the blacks.. These students and their parents definitely should be severely reprimanded and anything less than that would be a joke in the eyes of the infraction committed.

Please don't say that these are innocent minors and the punishment should be light because they misunderstood the severity of their actions. THAT WOULD BE A CROCK!!

These idiots, I repeat IDIOTS, knew precisely what they were doing and therefore, should be admonished, reprimanded, and punished to the full extent of the law.

NOTHING MORE..NOTHING LESS!!!!

The teacher-advisor for the Yearbook should also be held accountable as well as the editor of the Yearbook. No excuse for that kind of mistakes when you work on the yearbook over the course of a school year.

The students are just the monkeys here. Take appropriate action on the yearbook faculty, who are ultimately in charge. Superintendent DeLong doesn't even MENTION this! Instead she quickly blames the students. Unreal. Proof that the administrative layer is absolutely useless.

Classic Waianae. No respect for the law or the well being of strangers and no accountability. An isolated embarrassment for the school adminstrators or small glimpse of what is allowed to occur pervasively within the system?

Punish the teacher/advisor to the school annual. The people that allowed that knew exactly what they were doing.

This is vulgar and disgusting and punishment should be handed out.....

Well this cover-up fixes everything now. Don't worry folks, there's not a racism problem in Waianae anymore.

People over there are willing to cover up for their kids, and just ignore the problem.

Tasteless, stupd, idiotic and just plain being a stupid a-- does not make it a hate crime. There needs to be accountability but there sure isn't a hate crime here. The beating of visitors to the our west side are in many cases hate crimes because they target non-local people for their race but there is never an out cry that it is a hate crime. Not everyone here in this area will see this as a problem and thats what we have to deal with everyday.

Nice, blame the faculty for the actions of the students. Let's just blame all of Hawaii for being a racist state. I'm in the military and I'm hispanic...firt thing told to all military when you arrive...stay out of Waianae, they are the most racists out there. Where there's smoke there's fire...but go ahead and blame the faculty and not the low budget, pot smoking, dirt bags that were socially passed with a HS diploma...enjoy your janitorial job at the hotels and make sure you protect your part of the beach when tourist come through "Eh you like beef". The best part of being here is watching the locals pay through the nose for the basics and can't/won't do anything about it because they're too lazy to hold anyone accountable.

The irony here is the kids with the placards were actually attempting to spell F***ing Haole!

If only they had listened in spelling class.

Unexcusable, where was the faculty advisor, you know that SOMEONE saw that before it had final approval. It is a sad testimony to the fact that we haven't come that far, is this 1960 or 2009?

Ummm, sorry to dispute YOUR racist generalization but not all of the students that held up the signs were Hawaiian. Some of them live in the million dollar custom homes in the gated community in Makaha Valley.
