Look, the State or C&C or whoever needs to start regulating licensing not only for elderly drivers but everyone.

Yes, some of our elders MAY be good drivers into their 80's but statistics prove that reaction time and basic comprehension DECREASE with age.

Ever thought about this? As soon as a person qualifies as a "senior citizen" (what 65 now?) require a written and driving test every other year.

For the "young", "rice-rocket" drivers, apply a 3-strike rule: 3 times caught speeding (in excess of x mph) and the license is revoked, car impounded. If Mommy and Daddy spoiled the kid with this car, penalize them too (I'm a parent by the way and I would support this).

BOTTOM LINE: Stricter penalties, BETTER education, public AWARENESS will help to prevent these incidents from happening...

many kids that are under 21 are the ones who drive irratically. they make the roads so dangerous to drive. some senior citizens need to know when they are not capable to drive anymore... maybe their vision has gone bad, if they have arthritis, hearing loss, medical problems, etc. the combination of slow and fast drivers make it very dangerous for others on the road. im not only trying to target the young and the elderly, but some ages inbetween the two... they make it like they own the road. people should just calm down... why stress over... it will raise your blood pressure!

Elderly drivers like this one should have been given road tests before getting their license renewed. There have been far too many cases like this involving people who should no longer be behind the wheel. It's not a matter of civil rights; it's a matter of public safety.

Why are 90 yr olds driving?! When are they going to pass some laws against this or require more frequent testing for senior citizens?

Quite the contrary. If she were my mother, I'd welcome her being taken off the road. I know from experience that one of the hardest thing for spouses or children to do is take the car keys away from an elderly spouse/parent. Sometimes it's impossible to make it happen. The city needs to intervene when lives are at stake.

Awww, you guys are all so amusing. The entertainment value of the Star-Bulletin postings exceeds everything on TV! There are vultures circling overhead, ready to swoop down on anyone who ever made a mistake, much less commits a spelling error. There are mainlanders whose unrestrained stereotyping of Hawaii and its people helps to redefine the meaning of ignorance. There are flower children preaching peace, love and tolerance. There are the clueless, with their off-the-wall commentary on an article they obviously didn't read. There are racists who are so caught up in anger and self-hatred that they can't restrain themselves in an unregulated media environment. There are kanaka ma`ole fixated on purging the islands of anyone who is not Hawaiian, Hawaiian-Chinese, Hawaiian-Filipino, Hawaiian-Caucasion, Hawaiian-Japanese, Hawaiian-Lithuaean, or Hawaiian-Turkish. There are conspiracy theorists who see a deep dark plot behind every elected official. There are vigilantes screaming "string 'em up" and "fry 'em" for anyone who has been arrested, much less convicted. And then, there are the grudge holders, who have at some point in the past been insulted by someone else's comment, and for the life of them just can't let it go! I love you all! Thanks for making my lunch time such an entertaining hour.

what does evan's room being dirty and why he wasnt in school have anything to do with the issue? Anyway..most elderly people should not drive. They drive too slow and are totally oblivious to whats going on around them. There are also so many elderly people who cant even cross the street properly so why let them have a license?

Anecdotal claims about how our elderly parents are such great drivers is nice and all but misses the point. While age alone (old & young) doesn't necessarily determine someone's driving ability, there is evidence that aging has an impact on driving performance. Drivers 70 and over should be required to renew their licenses every year in person and only after passing a road test.
I wasn't praising my parents for being such great drivers, I just meant that they are good drivers for their ages. The fact that they are still on the road at that age speaks for itself. Most young people driving at the moment scare the hell out of me with their "I don't give a damn about anyone but me" attitude.

p.s Where is this study printed? I'd really like to see it to see if Dick Hertz knows what he's talking about.

Because their 65 year old kids don't want to take away their freedom. They know their parents are a problem but feel bad if they get involved in taking their license away. Testing is something that should be stressed during renewals.

People, it was a F!@#$% ACCIDENT! Don't be quick to judge this 90 year old lady and her driving abilities. I know alot of younger folks (Teens to mid 40's who are crappy drivers as well!!!!). Remember that we will ALL be at that age someday in our lives.
To say that this lady is a menace on the road is wrong. What if it was your mother who was driving? You'd all be saying and shouting something diffrent saying "but it's okay cause it's my parent and they were just tired or something!"
And all of you have nothing better to do than to offer your "computer chair' comments, get a life!
i got a life and at my age, 71, i rather drink than drive.
but seriously, my question is how the older people get around. i guess in honolulu they take the bus, but in other parts? must be hard to suddenly have to depend on other people for transportation, but they themselves must come to the point of realizing that they cannot safely drive anymore.

On the other hand, the 65 year olds should be concerned cause their 90 year old parents are going to be sued in a civil suit and lose their homes in which case the 65 year olds wont have a place to live anymore.

let us not confuse unsafe older drivers with unsafe younger drivers. Unsafe young drivers ought to have their licenses revoked for a period deemed appropriate. Unsafe old drivers with failing physical and mental capabilities shouldn’t be driving at all. The 90 year old driver in this case probably needed a couple more moments to remember the difference between the gas and brake. Not good. Imagine if she was driving a motorhome or big SUV.

I have personally witnessed state employees giving elderly people the answers to the written and vision test. I was appalled and said so. The lady said she didn't want to fail a tutu. Thank you! Let'sa put 'em on the road so that can threaten the rest of us. Better yet...give 'em a beer so at least they're enjoying it!

i remember watching a old lady park her car in a handicap stall once at kahala mall about 2 or 3 years ago. i thought she was finished parking, when she actually stopped her car. but all of sudden her car went foward and smashed into the handicap sign post. i wonder if this was the same lady.
Get teenagers and the elderly off of the road!!!

The state of hawaii should get sued by the family.Due to letting a 90 year old woman drive in the state.I think it is to old for anyone to drive.65 if the cut off age to drive. And to drive starting age is 25 years old.
