In all fairness to the prosecuter the law fails to support the victim. The mentality of our chosen few (ie politicians) is to handicap criminal prosecution and protect the rights of the accused. Racial and intellectual issues aside these gentlemen (if I may use the word in such poor taste) were given what amounted to the most "pratical" prosecution and a "deal" was probably cut to ensure even that.
With that aside I ask do YOU feel safe. If not, why do we keep voting for these self serving idiots that care more about fund raising and maitaining the status quo then about representing the public interests.

Waianae is not a dump. There are as many good people here as any where else. If it is so horrible here, why is there car after car bringing "visitors" out here every weekend?
It takes a real moron to say that because of the actions of a few, the whole group is bad and a bigger moron to say that the whole coast is criminal.
In your way of generalizing, all men in Kailua (or that area) beat women to death with a gun in the middle of the street and it is not safe on Kaneohe Bay drive because some guys were run down and shot last year. Waikiki is dangerous, was not a presidential bodyguard assaulted there last year? There was a huge ice bust in Makakilo so everybody there must deal drugs. Actually that dump of a store where the murder took place was picketed by locals who wanted the place closed down.
Blame the incompetent court system.
All these crimes you are citing may be in different parts of the island, but all the perps have thier roots back in waianae.

And the guy saying waianae has some of the nicest people offereing "stranger" to stay in the home while his truck was crushed....I bet you that the driver you are talking about was not white. Had that been a white guy, I bet you he would have been either beaten, robbed or probably both.

People who say Waianae is safe and has great people have to realize its safe for locals with brown skin, but not for other ethnicities.

i have been silent for awhile [i have a life] but feel the need to chime in for makasurf.. i lived in waianae for about ten years until 1996.. it is a lovely place but can't comment about the dangers now with the drug epidemic.. i am a european very petite and very caucasian lady, 60's now but was between 40 and 50 then.. i never felt threatened or fearful, walking to pokai bay in the evening or swimming at yokes [keawaula] by myself and i swim way out.. i paddled canoe with the big wahine and never felt any animosity other than support because i would go for it despite my size and age.. i had more trepidations in waikiki of the 80's where i always felt i was amongst vultures.. as for the "perps" originating in waianae, well i sort of think that their roots go a bit further.. it's so sad to condemn not only a community but the good people who live there because of some dope addled idiots who do terrible animalistic things that bring disgrace to an entire coast.. aloha

It's easy to be outraged from VA. When you deal with Hawaii juries and the 9th Circuit it's a different story. There is case law directly on point that creates a huge causation issue with the heart attack. The victim had a pre-existing heart condition and just riding a bike could have caused the heart attack. I agree that those 3 men are animals, but the problem is bigger than the prosecutor. It starts from the liberal Supreme Court and reaches down to the liberal juries in Hawaii. Welcome to Paradise!

what dispicable human beings these three are.
Murata - the threat to "kill" was mentioned twice in the article. Once directly to the victim and the second to the witnesses. These guys are a menace to society. The heart attack was a result of the assualt...plain and simple. You should compensate the family of the victims, and then submit your resignation.
