These kids drive their mopeds crazy so what do you expect. Regular people to feel sorry for them when they crash and die?

I know what you mean; how about those idiots who were racing on Ala Moana Blvd. a few years back? The two kids were speeding and drunk when they plowed into an SUV. All of their friends showed up on the news to say how these two were "good kids". What about the innocent people in the other car? In this case, I'm just happy the two didn't hurt anyone innocent...

Wow, according to the article, when they crashed, all their 58 friends scattered. That a way to take care of your fellow riders. GOOD GOD! All 58 of those kids should go to jail. In fact, these kids probably already belong in jail before they hit the streets. Apparently some of the mopeds were STOLEN??? What a bunch of losers.

You have to be over 15 to get a moped license. But I don't think you need insurance.

It's illegal for 11 year olds to operate mopeds.

The police have a lot of things to take care of, but my concern would be with the parents. Why are they letting their kids drive around illegally? That's the problem. Discipline your kids before it's too late.

A helmet is required until age 18. Safety glasses are also required. The problem? It's only a $25 fine, and it's never enforced. Shame on the parents.

Same with helmet laws for kids on bicycles, unenforced law. I'm thinking that one is there more to protect the state from lawsuits, though. Kid gets hurt on state property, kid wasn't following the letter of the law due to parent's negligence, the state has a good defense.

I read in the paper this morning with the headlines something like "he was a really good kid", but this really good kid was riding a moped without a license, modified, which is illegal to do on a moped, and their moped gang was riding from papakolea to the north shore, with stolen, modified mopeds, and probably hardly any of them had a license to operate. I guess his motorcycle riding skills did not help him, since he probably wore a helmet when every he raced motocross. Sad that some of the young ones go so early.

You must be out of the loop. They closed down the only race track on the island in April of last year. We're waiting for the Superferry now, so we can go race on Kauai and Maui's tracks. That wouldn't have helped this kid, you still need a license to take your moped on the HSF.

Of course you have to be... These kids riding around like hoodlums need to be stopped. I don't care how "Good" they were. If they were so "Good" then they should have been wearing the proper safety equipment and abiding the speed limits. And not modify the mopeds to go over the intended speed limits and modifying the exhaust to wake everyone up in the mornings as they do near my home...
