So, it's time for Lingle and the legislature to tell Inouye and kaka to scuttle the bill.
Classy to call Senator Akaka, "kaka".

Very classy Mr. Conklin.

I'm glad you consider yourself a leader in the anti-Hawaiian movement.

Do it! Have your counter march on the same day and in the same area as the 'red shirts.' Do it. It would make you look so much like a 'civil rights' advocate. You may even make the front page. Do it. I dare you. Please...

ONE (MY) SUGGESTION IS TO EXTEND STATE,
FEDERAL HOLIDAYS AND "BREAKS" SPRING, SUMMER ETC.(BY A FEW DAYS EACH UNPAID)AND HAVE THE PEOPLE INVOLVED D.O.E., B.O.E., SECRETARIES, LEGISLATEORS AND ANY OTHER WORKERS. EXCEPT FIRE, POLICE AND DISASTER AGENCIES. SO NO EMERGENCY SERVICES IS CRIPPLED OR HAMPERED.......

THIS ALONE SHOULD SAVE MANY MULTI-MILLIONS FROM THE BUDGET. I WOULD SAY TO THOSE INVOLVED "DAYS OFF OR LAYOFFS" (OF FELLOW WORKERS), IT WOULD BE THEIR THEIR CHOICE????????

A FEW TAKE THE HIT, SO EVERYONE CAN CONTINUE WORKING AND HAVE A JOB------I THINK THIS IS A NO BRAINER..........

Still from Kaneohe...

P.S.---DON'T TOUCH THE HURRICANE FUND, WE HAVE PRESSED OUR LUCK WITH HURRICANES FOR QUITE A WHILE----WHY GAMBLE WITH MOTHER NATURE,(THINK IWA AND INIKI) YOU CAN'T WIN........

Benito Mussalini; the man who invented Facism, his street thugs were called Brown Shirts.

The Brown Shirts suppressed any demonstrations other than their own with threats and violence.

Mr. mana333 and his Red Shirts, threating Mr. Conklin's right to free speech and assembly; "Do it I dare you. Please..." is cowardly and dangerous.

Take the money OHA is hiding and use it to help residents here. All their money came from 100% of the tax payers.

MUFI, YOU AND THE "GO RAILERS" SHOULD (BECAUSE OF THE ECONOMY), TAKE A LONG HARD LOOK, IF THIS IS INDEED THE RIGHT TIME TO START RAIL.....PEOPLE HAVE TO WORK TO PAY INTO THE G.E. TAXES---IT SURE DOESN'T LOOK GOOD FROM MY VANTAGE POINT.....

NO MATTER, PEOPLE WORKING OR NOT WILL HAVE TO PAY INTO THE G, E, TAX BASE AND PROBABLY, BECAUSE OF (G.E. SHORTFALL)WILL ALSO HAVE TO PAY FOR A RAISE IN PROPERTY TAXES,(WETHER YOU RENT "PASSED ON BY THE LANDLORD" OR OWN A HOUSE), THE MONEY HAS TO COME FROM SOMETHING OR SOMEWHERE "NOT FROM THE SKY, OR THE MONEY TREE IN THE BACKYARD.....THINK ABOUT IT??????????

Still from Kaneohe....

That's great, be sure to direct your comment at Conklin then. He is the one that's trying to make the protesters synonymous with a shirt color. I was simply entertaining his choice of terms. Thanks for the history, though. I'll be sure to throw it back in Conklin's face at the first opportunity.

It is Mr. Conklin that entertains the idea of a counter march, not I. I am simply expressing my support for his idea.

So yea, your bias isn't the least bit transparent. Keep hiding behind a sense of neutrality, moron.

Hate to pop your fantasy but OHA gets their money from ceded lands revenue.

Are you always this loose with the facts or is it just this time?

Wow, Leilani. You're so smart. Brilliant in fact. Following Lelani's logic, let's start with the State unemployment office. No more hiring. After all, this agency only gives money to lazy good for nothing people who don't want to work. Shut down Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs. If you got a problem with a contractor or insurance company, too bad. You should have known better. Go back to school. Shut down the Health department. If you got sick, too bad. Suck it up, cry baby. Shut down the Department of Transportation. Just ride The Bus or the rail when that's up and running. No need spend money on highways.

How we doing so far Leilani? Please, share more of your brilliance with us. I'm feeling much better already.

Here are a few suggestions to help with the budget which could be implemented immediately with results within a month.
1. Turn off the air conditioning in ALL government buildings downtown. Even with electricity prices coming down, this is a needless waste of money. After all, if students and teachers don't need air conditioning in 90 degree plus classrooms, legislators, department heads, and staff in downtown agencies where the temperatures reach only into the 80's don't need air conditioning either.
2. For the upcoming legislative session, implement a budget freeze on ALL office supplies for the legislators' offices. If the legislators need paper, paper clips, staples, pens, printer ink, postage, and so on, they can pay for these items out of their own pockets and deduct the expenses on their income taxes. They have recently received a substantial pay increase to $48,000 for a session which lasts roughly 4 months. They can easily afford to pay for their own office supplies.
3. Take all government cars and trucks, except those used for emergency purposes (ambulances, and so on), off the road. Require employees to drive their own cars and pay for their own gas. Let them deduct any expenses on their taxes.
4. Go to a four-day work week in all government offices, close agencies down for three days a week, and turn off all electricity and other services to cut down on expenses.
5. Use virtual meetings instead of in-person meetings to eliminate all travel expenses. For any critical meetings requiring travel, let the employee deduct it from their taxes. Do not fund it in any way except to provide frequent flyer miles to "pay' for airline fares. If there are no frequent flyer miles, then the employee will have to pay their own way.
6. Eliminate all "vacant" positions statewide.
7. Place a freeze on all temporary hiring and emergency hires, except for positions providing emergency services, health care, and social services for the elderly, disabled, abuse victims, and mentally ill. In other words, no hiring in the transportation, highway, and other less critical departments.
These cuts should save millions of dollars.

Roger--
You deliberately misread my suggestions.I did not suggest eliminating departments that provide services to people. I said get rid of less necessary expenditures such as air conditioning, travel, government cars, and additional NEW positions. These things are luxuries in a time of serious economic problems.

I have two great ideas for solving the budget problem.
1. OHA had about $500 Million stashed away in the New York (stock/bond markets) before the big decline. Maybe $350-$400 Million still left. Instead of raiding all the other special funds (like Hurricane), just grab up all that money for the general fund. OHA has been hoarding cash for years to invest it. Time to bring the money home to Hawaii where it can be put to good use like schools, roads, etc.
2. The study just released Thursday by the Beacon Hill Institute says that if the Kaka bill passes it will cost the state treasury between $343 to $690 Million PER YEAR in lost income depending how much land is handed over to the Kaka tribe.
http://tinyurl.com/9f6rxn
So, it's time for Lingle and the legislature to tell Inouye and kaka to scuttle the bill. The red shirts will be marching on Saturday Jan 17 demanding Lingle withdraw the ceded lands case from the Supreme Court. Let's have a huge counter-march demanding the Kaka bill be withdrawn.
Ken, I suspect that Inouye and aKAKA would both become "Indian" Tribal Chiefs very quickly! Isn't Inouye ALREADY an honorary Indian?.....And as such, it's only a short stretch to see these two crooks running the show; determining who IS and who is NOT a 'Native Hawaiian.'...... and so, the corruption goes on. You can put a pig in a dress, but it's still a pig, as the expression goes.
