Fact is, that old building has a "haint".

If we slip back in time to 1934, the great depression was in full force and folks around Marshville were just as broke, poor and hungry as folks anywhere else.

Old Man John S. Chambers and his wife Lucille owned and operated Chambers Merchantile and Farm Supply there. They lived upstairs above the store and rented rooms. Business was slow, as it was for even the big competitor, Marshville Merchantile, but the Chambers store was scrapping by.

One cold and windy Saturday afternoon Old Man John was in the back throwing more wood into the stove when he heard the door open and close quickly. Thinking it was Lucille coming in from upstairs, old man John kept at his task. When he was done he walked slowly toward the front. Off in the distance he heard the 5 o'clock whistle of the Piedmont Special at the train depot. He was glad Lucille had come down since he needed to visit the facility.

He didn't see the iron bar that struck him so viciously that it crushed his skull and sent him to meet his maker instantly and without pain.

They never found out who killed Old Man John. His killer, whoever he was, walked away with less than five dollars, most of it in change.

Lucille sold the store and moved to Hamlet with a man who worked on the railroad.

It was tough going for the young couple that bought the store. They didn't stay long. Their name was Henry but that's about all people remember about them. They told people that strange things were happening. Doors were opening and closing by themselves, windows that had been nailed shut were found raised and they heard noises.

One night Mrs Henry appeared at the police station. She was pale white and shaking so badly that she couldn't get a word out that made any sense. A doctor was summoned who declared that she had suffered a nervous "spell". He prescribed a powerful tranquillizer and ordered her sent to the Sanitorium in Ansonville. She never returned and her husband was never found.

Folks around here tell that something got after them that night. Something they couldn't see. Something that came out of one of those big brick walls and descended on them like a cold flame. Something so terrifying that it silenced their screams and made their blood run cold through their veins.

Willard, I don't know the history of that building or whether or not any of those people really lived, but I liked your story.

You took the comment made by a juvenile mind that could be no more imaginative than an attempt at ridicule, and you made an interesting article.
Thanks for taking the time to share.

This message may be a bit after the fact but, I thought maybe I could help in regards to the link.
I tried the link that was blue, that didn't work for me, however the link above it did work. Try copy and paste. That link is educational if you take some time to have a look around. I hope this helps you Flores.
