How can this possibly be done under the cloak of a non-profit?

See how quickly a nonprofit corporation is established; wonder if it receives a 501(c)3 designation from the IRS

You have got to be kidding me. Why does he need help to pay for his defense? Hasn't all of this scandal made it clear that he's extremely wealthy and can pay for his own defense? If nothing else, he can sell one of his many homes.(For the record, I voted for Gov. McDonnell.)

This must be a joke! The Governor gets all of this money and chachkies for himself and his family in addition to renting his home to one of his appointees, and a non-profit sets up a defense fund for him. If I were a state employee and received such largess from a private company, I would be fired unceremoniously....

He is to wealthy to qualify for public defenders so we create a nonprofit to pay for his defense. Gotta love the justice system. It is design for the wealthy to do wrong and pay their way out of trouble while the poor man is left with public rejects for attorneys to defend them.

He will not need to report these donations either per Virginia law.

I have a Rolex watch I want to donate to the fund. Does anyone have an address to send it to? Do we get to drive the Ferrari too for donating?

I really do not understand what all the hub bub is about,,,,this is what politicians do ,get away with, and then sit back and laugh at all that voted them into office.

It is only the regular citizens who may make a mistake about something that are punished, and I am not talking about the actual I meant to do it people.
The one thing I have learned in all my years is that there is not a politician in office that I would trust, promises of the world are made,,,and then once in office are easily forgotten.

as sabato sez, it's high time to ban ALL donations over a nominal amount (say,$100).
You can't just "account for them" as the cooch did belatedly, you need to rid them to ensure NO conflict of interest. Politicians are elected and paid salaries by taxpayers and should only be beholden to them.

he's required by law to balance the budget
the 'surplus' is an accounting trick
plus VA is one of the stingiest states for education and social services, and it has the geographic distinction of being a federal bedroom community which is by far VA's largest employer, so you can thank obama.
