Wow, that means screening reduces the risk for someone high risk from 1% to 0.30 or 0.40%...all this effort for a few women.
No wonder they sweep away all the negative outcomes.
I know a low risk woman has a low risk of this cancer...it's close to nothing. European doctors are honest...far more honest than American, English and Australian doctors. A Scandanavian doctor put my risk at about 0.20%...with screening every 5 years from 35, the risk of a false positive was about 52%.
She said she always advises women of that risk at the outset. With %'s like that, it's only fair.
Yet my American friend, a virgin and 21 was abused and ridiculed by a Dr when she refused screening. She has never had a routine gyn exam, she knows they are little value. She feels stronger because she was also impressed with the doctor we saw in Helsinki. We both know exactly what the risk is now and can make the right decision for us.(and fight off our doctors with confidence)
It is shameful that doctors in other countries use coercion and bullying to screen everyone, regardless of personal risk with this cancer, the risks of testing and with no regard for your right to choose.
This is the most serious issue facing women today...the abuse of our rights and bodies.
How relieved are we that we decided to holiday together in Finland and Lapland for a month?
The greatest thing we took home with us, honest advice, will protect us for the rest of our lives. If you are travelling in that part of the world, speak to a local Dr. Our doctors are extremists, their doctors are honest and calm. They don't take risks with your health.
Also, a high risk girl travelling with us was given sound advice. Sexually active from 15, she's had a few partners including a guy who was a sex addict, condom use has been haphazard as well. They recommended 5 yearly smears from 30, still she'll probably only need 7 tests in total over her entire life. They also calculated the risk posed by this cancer for her and took her through the things that can flow from a false positive. The positives and negatives were explained...they didn't scare her, they put the risk in context.
Basically, carry a small risk and respond to any symptoms promptly or reduce the risk with screening (there is still a small risk with screening as not all cancers are picked up by the test) AND accept the risk of false positives. She said any abnormal result should be reviewed before any treatment was permitted...very often an abnormal smear is normal 12 months later. Rushing in and treating should be avoided - if you don't want to wait 12 months, even a repeat smear can be worth while. This Dr said she'd had CIN 2 results come back as normal on a repeat smear. If you're high risk, having 7 smears sensibly so that your risk of false positives is minimized is far more sensible and more acceptable to many women than being pap smeared every 6 months or year from teens until you drop dead...that currently happens in the States. My friend's aunt has had 58 normal pap smears, which is total madness and she's not even high risk! The doctors still respected the right of our high risk friend to make her own decision. She said there is no point driving a high risk woman away (or any woman)...you work with your patient, after all, this cancer poses a very small risk and women avoiding doctors may neglect more important risks to their health like high blood pressure and high cholesterol and other things that can be managed...or they can lead to serious problems.
She considered obesity and smoking as much bigger risks to your health than cervical cancer.
We all loved the way this Dr put the entire thing in picture including the down side of this screening and it's impact on a healthy woman.
We all bought her some wine and flowers, we were so very grateful to her.
Wow! Now that proper anti-sleeze health advice.

It comes down to personal boundaries and relationship boundaries. It seems to come down to one "switch". Being nude is private, most don't let others see us naked, especially the genitals. Normally only we see ourselves nude and our intimate partners. This is usually more pronounced with girls because guys always want to see them naked so they are usually more protected. If a man walked in on a woman changing clothes or showering most girls would be shocked and would reach for a towel and cover up. That's pretty normal almost everyone would react that way. Now we come to medical exams, some have this switch that as long as it's medical then these normal privacy boundaries no longer apply and they say if it is medical I will let a man I'm not intimate with see me graphically nude and it's ok, otherwise they'd request or ensure a lady doctor for a "nudity" exam. If some people are that way it is totally logical and expected that there are plenty of people opposite of that way who still keep their privacy, intimacy boundaries with medical exams as well, rejecting male doctors for nude exams and many husbands also have those intimate boundaries of "if a nude exam is to be done a lady doctor should do it" with the exception of ER emergencies. Just because it is "medical" doesn't cause their boundaries to change. Just like when a lady gym teacher enters a girls changing room being ok, but a man doing the same not being ok. Some make this exception for routine medical exams and many don't have a "switch" but rather still have boundaries that it is not appropriate for a man (not my mate) to see me nude or for a husband to feel it is inappropriate for a man to examine his wife nude.

A DOCTOR jailed for raping his wife is fighting to keep his medical licence - arguing his cultural beliefs meant he thought he had "unconditional consent" to have sex with her.
Dr Aron Kondasinghe Sudath, a GP and surgeon, yesterday fronted the Medical Tribunal after being convicted of raping and assaulting his ex-partner.

Dr Sudath disputed many of the findings against him, denying he attacked the woman and saying traditional Sri Lankan arranged marriage meant neither partner could refuse intercourse.

The Health Care Complaints Commission argued Dr Sudath, whose registration is suspended, was unfit to practice medicine due to criminal convictions and poor character.

Yesterday the commission's barrister Philip Strickland SC suggested the doctor had created the "cultural excuse" to justify his criminal acts and continued to blame his wife for his "predicament".
