If I understand it correctly, background checks for all legal gun purchases are already the law. The only time there are not background checks done for a legal fire arm transfer is in an inheritance situation or transfer from one family member to another.
From http://www.csgv.org/issues-and-campaigns/gun-...

"Unfortunately, current federal law requires criminal background checks only for guns sold through licensed firearm dealers, which account for just 60% of all gun sales in the United States. A loophole in the law allows individuals not “engaged in the business” of selling firearms to sell guns without a license—and without processing any paperwork. That means that two out of every five guns sold in the United States change hands without a background check.

Though commonly referred to as the “Gun Show Loophole,” the “private sales” described above include guns sold at gun shows, through classified newspaper ads, the Internet, and between individuals virtually anywhere.

Unfortunately, only six states (CA, CO, IL, NY, OR, RI) require universal background checks on all firearm sales at gun shows. Three more states (CT, MD, PA) require background checks on all handgun sales made at gun shows. Seven other states (HI, IA, MA, MI, NJ, NC, NE) require purchasers to obtain a permit and undergo a background check before buying a handgun. Florida allows its counties to regulate gun shows by requiring background checks on all firearms purchases at these events. 33 states have taken no action whatsoever to close the Gun Show Loophole."

"Advocates for closing the gun show loophole will encounter statements by the gun lobby that don’t tell the whole story. The answers below rebut the most common gun lobby claims.

1. They Claim: There is no such thing as the “gun show loophole.” Every sale that requires a background check outside a gun show requires a background check inside a gun show.

Quick Answer: The “gun show loophole” is really part of a larger loophole that allows unlicensed, private sellers to sell guns without the Brady criminal background checks required for all sales by licensed dealers.

Because gun shows are a primary venue for unlicensed sales, the absence of any background check requirement for unlicensed sales at gun shows is often referred to as the “gun show loophole.”

Rabid right-wingers who don't even want to stop terrorists/criminals/violent mentally from getting guns, are a very small minority.

"Gun owners and NRA members also strongly support background checks for gun purchasers. A May 2012 poll of gun owners – including NRA members – found that:
87% of NRA members agree that support for Second Amendment rights goes hand-in-hand with keeping guns out of the hands of criminals; and
74% of NRA members and 87% of non-NRA gun owners support requiring criminal background checks of anyone purchasing a gun."

That was the source of your article. Just like Here is One, you cite the article as proof of something, when the author has a preconceived conclusion.

If I posted an article from Rolling Stone, would you accept it as proof of anything?(By the way, great article on the bailout in current RS, you might even agree with most of it.)

I already showed you where the 40% figure is bogus. Unless of course you think that a survey of 250 people done in NY in the early 90s, before current background check laws were implemented, somehow paints an accurate picture of the entire nation.

But of course you don't care much for facts.

Hey stupid! Wake up, cause it's not a dream!!!
Department of Homeland Security buys even more hollow point rounds.
This is the latest order by the DHS of hundreds of millions of rounds of hollow point ammo. Back in March, the agency purchased 450 million rounds of .40 caliber ammunition from the ATK company out of Minnesota. This was followed in April by a solicitation for another 750 million rounds, including .357 magnum rounds that are capable of penetrating walls. All together, this is over a billion rounds.
The DHS has so far refused to say why they are purchasing billions of rounds, as this is an unusually large amount. When more people started questioning these purchases, the DHS responded by classifying information, blacking out certain sections of a solicitation, including portions pertaining to 64 and 65 grain .223 ammo and the number being requested.
