Bud, in the military we learn that we are not so different. I served 30 in uncle sams flying club. And yes, I am black. Never encountered a racist in the Air Force. The military is different because we rely on each other for our lives. Keep them flying bud.

My house burnt down in 1993 close to that Church, and the only local Church in the community (not the one we attended regularly St. James) to come to us while we were sifting through the ashes and offer us help and even gave my mother cash they had collected that Sunday was Rock Hill Church. I remember crying at such a generous offer from a church we had never attended. They are beautiful people and my family and I am horrified this happened! These people are the sweatiest and kindest.

I dont condone this behavior at all but People on here are asking about why there is racism. Here are a couple reasons.I've been a newshound for a couple years now and 9 times out of 10 when you see a survielance video of a guickstop robbery, there is alawys a black teen waving a gun. Also when their is any gathering of a large group of young blacks,it usually ends up in gunfire.Just this week at a high school graduation party one black killed another and wounded 2 in Riverview,Fl.Their are also vids of shootings at black furerals.Have you ever heard about this at a white funeral in modern times, setting aside all the violence of Al capone etc.. of 70 years ago.All the vids on youtube and the media of assaults on public transportation and busses involve blacks teens.Just go to the news sites of St Louis, click2detroit,
click2houston, Chicago, any major city in Ohio ETC.. and you will see for yourselfs.Alot of blacks willl come back to refute this behavior by saying that "just look at all the white child molesters".Well that behavior is at least proportionate to the white population unlike the black crime that is disproportionate to the 12% population.
What about all the schools where the white kids went in and shot and killed other innocent white kids, the Oklahoma City bombing and the little girls that were blew up in a church in the late 50's? We can compare stories all day and night, bottom line, there is good and bad in every race. And what we are talking about is a place where you worship being targeted because of the color of their skin. Whether they are black or white, they should be able to worship and without all the name calling. We need to stop the hatred.

I'm not sure how to address this. Bad as it may be, I'm sure that the community was not "set back sixty years". How ludicrous. And also, the "I'm fearful" comment. Fearful of what? Being that the sign looks like it was defaced in the night, by someone with bad penmanship. The concern about racism is not unfounded, but displayed as a tool for prolonging the perceived benefit of being the racism victim. The other really perplexing part of this story is that a woman seemingly believed that racism and bad thoughts about it were miraculously wiped out, until this event. How naive. Really the beginning of the article says it all: "Vandals attack a 116 year old African American church". So, does that mean there are no white people in the congregation? If a white person were to arrive on the front steps of that church, do we all believe they would be welcomed every Sunday after that? Or, would that person be greeted with a raised eyebrow? Maybe it would be untraditional to allow a white person or any other race other than black people into the church. Does that mean that racism is okay as long as it's a traditional? I'm not sure. I guess we have to figure out where racism starts and stops before we point fingers. Is racism in a word carelessly scrawled onto a street sign? Or, is it in groups housed in established buildings? You tell me.

I grew up down the road from this church and know the woman's elderly parents. I don't get out that way much, lately, but I still consider it home. This church is out of the way and whoever did this HAS to be local.

Twenty years ago, Everybody knew Everybody and their schedules on that road. It hasn't been like that for quite a while, with the city folk and their urban sprawl. On the one hand, there are families who have spent multiple generations on that road, but nowadays most people keep to themselves with a handful of exceptions, mostly the 'old timers'. You wouldn't know that there is a gay couple living out there, or that there was a recent drug/meth bust on the road. Heck, even despite the mix of white and black families, there are some who still can't accept the fact racism is dying out.

I do hope they catch this punk(s?), whoever they are, and make them apologize to the whole congregation for their act of stupidity. I'm not religious, but I hope they can be shown the error of their ways by the congregation.

As for those who say they would like to attend services there, I'm sure you won't be turned away, but the only problem is the limited parking and seating space, so please plan accordingly.

@Metro Cynic - yes, it is a totally black congregation to the best of my knowledge. Although the church has been used as a meeting place for residents of the road for various reasons over the years. As mentioned above, there is a mix of white and black families on the road, but I could not give you a percentage of which, these days. It used to be pretty much 50/50, but with the increased residences and traffic, I would guess more 60/40 w/b, if not more whites?(this includes several residences, old and newer, each belonging to two extended families, both white.)

As for whites joining the congregation, I would simply suggest calling and asking for permission and service times. As I mentioned above, space is limited for parking and seating. At the very least, show your moral support for the Rose Hill congregation.

As I recall, there was a few white people who were members of that church. Whether they still are, I donít know. However, I do know that once a year the churches in the community and have service together, both black and white, I think itís a Martin Luther King Program. The year before last according to the Union Missourian News Paper it was held at Rose Hill Missionary Baptist Church. Brian is correct, they do have limited parking and they are trying to extend their parking lot. My husband, my mom and dad and I had a couple of BBQ'S and donated money to the church to help out.
