Trying to get a feel from the people of Douglas County and Douglasville. How do we change it for the better? Have all the bad apples recalled by the voters? Freeze the budget? Raise or lower taxes? Schools reverted back to old lines and the new one only redrawn? School board members recalled? Home properties frozen back to year 200? or leave them alone? Lets hear some serious ideas. Maybe we can get the leaders to review our ideas. Maybe not. Snicker.

I'd like to see an end to the bitch-slapping between the mayor and the county commission chairman.
They should both be voted out of office when they come up for re-election.

Combine the two governments like Athens-Clarke County did.

Also bring business into Douglas County to create jobs, not just retail. Not just of Riverside Street either. There are a lot of old building on Bankhead Highway, and if I'm hearing rumors correctly then the GreyStone building will be empty soon too, bring manufacturing in. What would it take to retool these buildings? Look into manufacturing solar panels, green energy, anything to put our county back to work.

Amen. That is the single best move that could be made. Should have done it before they built the two new Law enforcement buildings, though.

ALL of your ideas are excellent & should be put into effect ASAP. I would only add two more, a little more direct. Get read of Tom Worthan who has been at the forefront of every spending project for the last two years. To him there is no problem with the economy in Douglas County. If you ever mention ( at the meetings for the new millage rate)cut the budget. His only answer is, we can not cut public safety. But how about new parks, schools, library & some road improvements.Answer,to cut the budget will heart public safety.
My other suggestion would be to make the BOC put ANY SPENDING project in the form of a poll on there web site at least 30 days pr-yer to a vote. So all that had a computer & had an interest in there tax money could see & say what the majority thinks & the BOC could not hide it until the vote was over.(like some roundabouts) So now they had to raise the money.
Now I should add one importent point here & they are really not going to like this, the poll question HAD to say what it was going to cost the taxpayer. Not like the sneaky amendment wording they use in special elections that has no turn out. I think we need more OPEN government BEFORE they spend the money not after.
The days of spend it first & pay for it later should be over.

Getting rid of Mickey would help bring companies here. He drives business away.

My ideas to make DC better aren't PC, nor would they be legal to implement.

1. Get rid of the apartments and trailer parks. Bulldoze them.

2. Enforce building codes! Bulldoze any homes in the city that do not comply.

3. Any one that is rumored to sell drugs, run them out of town.

4. Get rid of all county and city elected officials not doing their job properly. A citizen board would decide which ones to repeal.

5. Get rid of tattoo parlors, payday loan joints and car title loan joints.

6. Enforce ALL immigration laws and ship any illegals to the border to be shipped back by other federal agencies. If those agencies refuse, as they have done in the past, then leave the illegals at the border to fend for themselves.

7. Have volunteers stand outside each school every day and take pictures of cars with out of state tags and tags from other counties. Then have the police get the registered addresses for those tags and the names. Then match the names of the parents with the records in the school and have the police show up at these people's homes to see if they live there. If they do, make them buy a local tag. If they don't, arrest them when they deliver their child to school the next day.

I've got more, but am off the phone now and have to get back to work.

Every available citizen should be involved with their government. Attend the County commission meetings and keep track. Express your input in any forum you can.

ATTEND THE BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETINGS!!! The Board of Education and Indoctrination has been allowed to run wild too long without citizen input or oversight. Pressure both the BOE and the BOC to take input from citizens at the meetings.

And everyone who thinks the problems are a race thing (them dadburn black folks moved in and rurnt the county) get the chip off your shoulder and grow a brain.

Tom Worthan is a big government type and would NEVER be elected in a government where the citizens care about their quality of life. Same with some of the other elected officials... Big government people see the taxpaying citizen as a source of power and money and that's all.

Start electing qualified people who actually know how to operate on a limited budget... maybe some real businessmen or women. CALL THE POLITICIANS TO ACCOUNT!!!

holy crap. we touched on a good one here. somebody, anybody have the emails of the elected officials to which we can email these ideas to. does anyone know when the next sit and chat with the chairman is. how about if a bunch of people showed up. it is impromptu from what i hear. i bet that would scare the heck out of him to have a few dozen people there to hand him these ideas. i like alot of them. who cares if they are not pc. i'm not. i absolutely agree that we should have consolidated years ago, about 8-10 years ago would have been great. why can we not stop the contruction of the jail either one. contracts can be broken, money given back to the state. the splost given back to every citizen in form of a check with an apology for mucking up the works. then consolidate everything. could stop the city jail right where it is right now. make it into a municipal county parking lot for all vehicles. build the garages with left over money. bulldoze the complex on chicago avenue. turn it into a open park. nothing but open space to walk or picnic in or on. anything left over, back into the budget to lower the deficit. sell the land on chicago, recoup that and lower the deficit again. what's anyone's opinions on this.

If you're going to get rid of apartments, stop rentals in established neighborhoods and subdivisions, especially Sec 8s. Investment property purchased for rental income kills everyone elses property values.

I'm with you but I think that would require China to shut down and F.I.B. to shut down also.

LOL I was thinking of putting section 8 on my dream list, but stopped because it's a federal program. As long as I'm dreaming, I should have put it on the list!

You can't stop all rentals. It would create an entire new laundry list of problems.

Our email addresses are published in the Sentinel almost every other day on page 4A, they're on the govt. web sites, and you can Google them quite easily. But if all those options are too difficult for you to follow, my city email address is: [email protected] a.us.

One caveat: You'll have to provide your name and address. I will not respond to, nor act in any way upon anonymous emails or communication.

This is probably true, but unless we as citizens of Douglasville don't ban together we will just go down the tubes. But then again why would anyone want to take a $10 a job working when they can sit at home and be given a free ride.

I don't see anything wrong with douglas county.I recently moved from clayton county to get away from the crime. The first night I lived here, my son was arrested for simply stealing some wheels off a car.I don't see the big issue.I AM BLACK and we deserve this because of slavery.I love this town.I just wished marta ran here.I MISS THE SHUTTLE
