I have to say I really love the Saturday Markets in Eugene and Portland, too.

The Holiday Market in Eugene is opening soon and I'm looking forward to it. My neighbor sells his pottery there, the cheeses, gourmet foods and produce are great, and my cats love the Chronic Kitty catnip I can get only there. The vast array of artisans keeps me coming back every year.

Whoo hoo - The Saturday Market is now open every Saturday, April 5 through Nov. 15 - 10 am - 5 pm - 8th & Oak in downtown Eugene, Oregon.

"The first Saturday Market was held on May 9, 1970. It rained, and there were 29 vendors. The Market now has over 800 active members and nearly 300 of these members sell each week, rain or shine."

"Lane County Farmers' Market takes place each Saturday across the street from the Park Blocks, and also on Tuesdays from May through October. The Farmers' Market is an independent organization and Saturday Market's sister market. First set up under the auspices of Saturday Market in 1979, Farmers' Market became independent in 1989." Their website is here:

Portland has had their market up and running for over a month.

Portland Saturday Market - Saturday 10-5 p.m. and Sunday 11-4:30 p.m.- SW Ankeny Park + SW Naito Parkway + Burnside Bridge (under).

Portland Saturday Market is the largest arts and crafts market in continuous operation in the United States. It is held every Saturday and Sunday from March through Christmas Eve.

Maybe I'll see you at a Saturday Market this year...

"There are two basic principles which the Market Board considers most important and which it has decided to require of any other group in Oregon desiring to use the term "Saturday Market" in any form. Eugene has pre-empted the name "Saturday Market" for the State of Oregon. Other communities wishing to use the name will have to prefix it with their name, e.g., "the Medford Saturday Market." Even so, they must get permission from the Saturday Market Board, which will require that the following two conditions be met:(1) that the Market organization is non-profit, i.e., that none of the Directors gain any profit from the running of the Market, and (2) that everything sold at the Market is made, grown or gathered by the person selling it (or a family member or partner). This means that there are to be no imported or second-hand goods, thus insuring the direct relationship between the maker and the buyer."
