As explained to me by an employee that works there, waitress’s now have to split their tips amongst themselves, and with the counter clerk, and the cook. This is mainly because the owner doesn’t feel it’s fair that the waitress’s (sometimes) makes more money than the cook. Now her idea is split the tips to raise the cooks pay, how is that fair? What incentive does that give to the employees to provide good service because no matter what they will get tip money even if they do next to nothing! Now I have heard several patrons comment along the lines of “we are not going to tip anymore” I say that does nothing to change this policy after all the owner is still getting paid. I say until this owner stops these unethical policies we boycott this restaurant. My sympathies go out to some of the staff that works down there and it’s a shame that there are several great employees that are catching the brunt of this injustice!

Must be a liberal. Many years ago my soon to be wife worked at a drive in root beer stand. She worked hard. Got good tips. Owners daughter did not work very hard. Not good tips. So owner says share the tips.....Result........Good worker leaves and bad worker stays..........Ah, the joy of Obamas world comming to a business near you........

Does the waitress make 2.13 and the cooks make 7.25+ and still have to share? That would suck!

Reminds me of Joey G's wife taking money from the tip jar to buy supplies at the Jay-C. I'll bet some of those people getting cut in on the tips own 1% of the business, so don't make hourly and get a more creative cut, then take the tips to boot.

Wouldn't the practice of tip splitting be the same on the Hilltop? Same owner? I believe the employer is required to bring the tip employees up to minimum wage income if they aren't making that with thier hourly rate +tips. I doubt the waitresses are making minimum wage rate with the tips and the cook is probably making at least 9.00 an hour plus taking the waitresses tips. Sounds illegal to me. Dept of Labor should be contacted by the employees. Sickening but not surprising. The cook is probably a friend of the family or relative. Please file a complaint against this employer. There are labor laws to protect employees against unfair practices.

There is a simple cure for this. Don't tip them. It all comes down to greed. If Horst thinks its unfair for the cook to make less than the waitress, then obviously he has never waited tables. The man is an idiot. Pay the cook more. Splitting tips will only ensure that he will not get quality servers down there. Just desperate people who have no other options.

I am commenting on all this postings. Our hilltop girls and guys work there buns off maybe you all should know the truth, they make 7.25 and a tip jar they have no problem getting alone and sharing, the downtown store does, we have a policy manual that states everyone multi task. Where in town does a waitress make 7.25 a hour and get tips, we have 6 people downtown, and they sell donuts, run register, and even do some dishes, If they want to say they are strickly waitresses then we need to pay them waitesses pay of 2.25 or 2.15 per hour and then they get the tips. we bring in $200 to $300 a day and pay 6 employees any employee on the hilltop would come down there. we cant afford to pay a cook 9.00 or 10.00 a hour. we have to treat them all equal yes I have waited the tables it is not like a big restruant, you have many times you have nothing to do but find other things to do,If you don't tip you only hurt them all from making alttle more If we pay minium wage we can have a tip jar and share, like other businesss downtown, or we can just be a bakery and no breakfast, this will be the last post from me, to try to explain, Horst and I are far from being greedy

They all make minium wage and it takes a good cook to put out good food for the wait people too. Our cashier also sells the donuts and helps the wait staff with bussing, coffee, and if real busy she helps get stuff to the table, when she is not busy at the register, if she receives tips she put them in the tip jar too.
