wow, a bunch of crazies on these boards. It was a 14 year old kid. It was a simple accident, not a crime, not intentional. Get a clue people.

No, arson does not have to be intentional. It can include, in lesser degress, reckless or negligent behavior. This was certainly reckless or negligent. Where were the parents? Who was supervising this kid? Last time I checked 14 year-olds are not old enough to be lighting grills, cooking on grills, and cleaning it up. Sure, they can do it....but still should be supervised. Bummer for all involved.

There are people sitting in jail right now for "what could have" happened. This is a 14 year old, reform school will do nothing but make him a real delinquent. Let's not start throwing our children away too.

Where are the parents???? He's 14!! 14 year olds don't need constant supervision ... the kid made a dumb mistake and will have enough guilt to carry around....give him some punishment to help him with the guilt, but it was an accident.

Who said "constant supervision". But they obviously need SOME supervision. Oh that's right, let's not supervise and let them burn down apartment buildings.....hopefully next time some nonsupervised 14 year old won't burn down occupied apartments and people die.

Who said the kid had NO supervision. Does he live alone??? 14 year olds in many, many households are home alone while the parents are working all day. Or they are home alone while the parents are out for an evening.....heck, they are even babysitting other peoples kids!! DON'T PUT ANY OF THE BLAME ON THE PARENTS FOR NOT SUPERVISING!!

Good luck with how your left home alone unsupervised 14 year old turns out. If you choose to leave your 14 year old home while you work, so be it. I have different priorities....which include supervising my children.....

Agreed. My fourteen year old never went unsupervised. And if he ever pulled a bonehead stunt like this, the $169 fine would be the least of his problems. For starters, he'd be writing 15 apologies.

Where were this kid's parents? They should be held just as responsible as their kid. It's a miracle no one was hurt.
