I am voting for Loar. He's the only one with his caliber of experience. I've compared everyone that's running. Plus, he's got great reputation and I find he's the most genuine.

I checked both canadites websites and it seems to me that McMullen has more experience. Loar seems to have experience with traffic stuff but thats not what im looging for in a Sheriff.

You must not have "looged" very hard. Loar has experience with all the major stuff. McMullen only has experience with the jail which is one small part of what a sheriff has to deal with. McMullen's never even been a regular deputy.

Thanks for being such a smart a$$ John Weirsdell. If your representative of his supporters ( a jerk ) I’m definitely voting for Mcmullen. You typify his supporters, rich uppity snobs. Check some of his supporters. Russakis, Vernon Smith, etc…Rich supporters with special interests once he makes it in. Mcmullen is down to earth, treats everyone equal regardless of socioeconomic status and is supported by the people including Sheriffs Office employees. That says it all.

IRC Resident, thanks for being clueless. Here's the facts:

Russakis, Smith, Brown. Sure they may be wealthy, but that's irrelevant. Smith and Russakis are both FHP Commissioners and have been for years. That's how they know Loar. Russakis and Brown have been major law enforcement supporters for decades. In fact they funded and founded the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office's K9 Unit, by paying for the dogs, deputies, etc. and insisting that St. Lucie County be at the forefront of the latest techniques for narcotics intervention. Smith and one of Brown's sons are volunteer sheriff's deputies in St. Lucie county. They carry guns, drive patrol cars, and patrol for free. Again, they may be rich, but it sounds like they're the exact opposite of the snobby special interest that you're talking about.

Some of McMullen's main supporters, on the other hand.....Perry Fulford, Sonny Beville, Paul Fafeita...... Seriously, if you don't know anything about these people, its worth asking around. Draw your own conclusions. I'm not going to have to say anything bad about them like IRC Resident. I just want everyone to know they are major supporters of McMullen and he appears to readily accept their support....

None of Mcmullens supporters are as dirty as you incinuate but we all know about Russakis and Smith. I am sure they are "supporters" as it is good business. I will say that Brown is a nice guy and is clean but the others are not and you know it. If not you should do some digging yourself.

As a daughter of a FHP trooper who died in the line of duty, and a wife of a retired FHP trooper, I have to say that some of the comments have been very good and supported of the next sheriff of IRC, Deryl Loar. His experience and knowledge will be good for the county. I have known Deryl for a number of years and very proud to be apart of his campaign. I am not rich, nor am I ashame of giving my full name.. People who have something to say shouldn't be afraid to put there name down...IRC resident. I can understand why the deputies are afraid. But if you are a resident of the county, why are you afraid to list your name?

AFTER HAVING LIVED IN INDIAN RIVER COUNTY SINCE I WAS 4 YEARS OLD,THIS OLD SAYING IS VERY TRUE;IF YOU ALWAYS DO WHAT YOU'VE ALWAYS DONE,YOU'LL ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU'VE ALWAYS GOT! INDIAN RIVER COUNTY IS MORE THAN READY FOR A CHANGE IN THEIR SHERIFF AND ALOT OF OTHER COUNTY OFFICIALS.I'M SUPPORTING DERYL LOAR BECAUSE THE MAN HAS THE EXPERIENCE,KNOWLEDGE,AND VISION TO BRING THIS DEPARTMENT TO THE LEVEL THAT WE AS TAXPAYERS AND CITIZENS DESERVE AND EXPECT.BEING A LONGTIME BUSINESS OWNER AND HAVING EXPERIENCE DEALING WITH THE SHERIFFS OFFICE HAS LEFT ME DISAPPOINTED MORE TIMES THAN NOT.IT IS TIME TO BRING IN SOMEONE FROM OUTSIDE THE DEPARTMENT TO BREATHE SOME FRESH IDEAS INTO IT.IT'S OUR TAX MONEY AND OUR COUNTY,LET'S GET THE MOST EXPERIENCED MAN FOR THE JOB,AND THAT'S DERYL LOAR!!!

well I have seen the worst. Sunday we held a poker run to benefit a three and a half year old child with cancer. one of MCmullen supporters at the run was wearing a tee shirt and handing out bill mcmullen for sheriff bumper stickers trying to secure votes not only was he handing then out he was very forceful about it. I think this is a crying shame this child and his family are in a battle and some one has the gall to try and use this benefit for politics. at a later time MCmullen him self showed up wearing his shirt. not very tasteful.

Concerned Deputy,

What you have seen, but unfortunately cannot realize, is that we actually have a candidate who is part of the Sheriff's Office family; one that is truly concerned about his community, and especially his fellow deputies, as well as their families. Captain McMullen and his campaign were personally responsible for helping to spread the word about the benefit, collaborated with the Eagles who were amazingly gracious at every step, gave generously at the event, and kept his campaign headquarters (located next door to the Eagles') open throughout the day with air-conditioning on to help with the wonderful crowd who were there to support Baby Vincent and the Saputo family. The generous people who asked for and were wearing the shirts figured this out...too bad you couldn't see it. Even worse, you have, here, tried to exploit a wonderfully attended and successful benefit for the most worthy of causes for political rhetoric. Again, too bad.

wendy for your information there were other people supporting the other candidates that rode in the poker run and also one of the other candidates even rode in it but they choose not to politic during this ride. and don't mistake me the eagles riders are a great bunch of people I love them all.

Correction : The Poker Run / Benefit was Planed and Organized By The Southern Justice Motorcycle Club and The Eagle Riders. Both Organizations did a lot of work towards this cause. The Southern Justice MC is not supporting any political candidate for any office and thanks all who helped with the benefit. Please this was for a good cause lets not make this any worse because of one individual (who was very forceful with the bumper stickers). There were representatives at the benefit from all of the candidates who all contributed to the cause. The SJMC would like to thank all of the candidates and thier representatives for all donations.
The Benefit raised approximately $14,000.00 in total for the family.
As a community we can all pull together in times of need an leave our differences aside. Hopefully all candidates and or supporters will run a clean campaign and work on thier merits and stop the back biting and smear tactics.

There are times to be political, in any social gathering, but to hear that a supporter was at this event being aggressive handing out bumper stickers, shows how insensitive this person can be. I do not know who it was, however, this was suppose to be fund raiser for a child and his family, not a political rally. What has Indian River County come to-- hopefully this idiot was stopped before it became out of hand. At this time my vote for IRC Sheriff is undecided. I just hope people will be more sensitive and think of actions that could hurt others. On the other hand I can only hope this benefit was benefical to the child and his family, not to someone political campaign.

There is a big difference bewteen FHP and the Sheriff's Office. The only canidiate that has the experience is Glaser. 35 years in law enforcement.
The only candidate that has a masters degree and by far the most experience with the Sheriff's Office.
He who resides in Fort Pierce can't vote in Indian River County! You can support whoever you want but you have no say.
The bottom line is this race effects the people who work at the Sheriff's Office. May the best man win!!!

Being an outsider and not knowing any of the named candidates I would not presume to make any judgments about them or their qualifications, however after seeing that Capt. McMullen has named Bill Baird as his chosen Under Sheriff, I would have to support him. If he is wise enough to pick this man for Under Sheriff he has impressed me. Knowing and working for Bill Baird prior to my retirement I can only say he is a Cops Cops with outstanding management experience, professional demeanor, and a human side that made me delay my retirement for several years just to be able to work for/with him. Although he was the Deputy Chief he was approachable and likeable and honorable enough to always tell things the way they were, not the way you would like them to be. If Capt. McMullen is elected and Bill Baird becomes the next Under Sheriff, you will see positive changes to your agency.

Retired Clearwater said it all. For those that know Deputy Chief Bill Baird, know that he is first a COPS COP. He holds fast to values and belives in honesty. He is an outstanding leader and administrator, and the troops belive in him. Capt. McMullen has certainly selected a most honorable man, and one that will be a positive influence for the Sheriff's Office. His gain is CPD's loss. You might be interested in some other comments made on a CPD forum about Deputy Chief Bill Baird.

Staff 3 leaving would not be for the best, right now he is the only voice of sanity Clearwater has.

Posted: 03/12/08 08:03:28
I am sad to hear that Staff-3 could potentially be leaving, as he is the only one within the command staff that truly cares about and advocates for the line troops! Had he been the Deputy Chief of operations, things would certainly be much different now. I honestly do not know how he has endured 11 years… it is a testament to his ability to endure, if nothing else. I know for a fact that he has tried on many many occasions to stick up for, and look out for the rank and file… Baird is an honorable and decent man. He does not have a deceitful or malicious bone in his body! If he does become the Under Sheriff or Chief Deputy in Indian River County, those guys and gals will most likely be the best treated cops in the State.
