Editor of the Reformer:

I will start by saying that I hate politics. I think it opens the door to mud slinging, name calling and hurtful comments, most which are untrue. The things people will say or the actions they will take to get a vote or two is despicable.

I am pleased to say that until the candidate from Guilford (Mr. Richard Davis) was offended by a flyer in the Vernon Newspaper, this campaign season had been polite and relatively quiet (at least in our Representative race). What I am not pleased about, is the behavior which Mr. Davis and his followers have displayed on iBrattleboro and the Internet via e-mail. While I understand it must have been a real downer to see in print just how inexperienced his opponent is, it gives Mr. Davis no right to launch a campaign against a fellow citizen whether an opponent, or just someone who is not a supporter. The comments which supporters of Mr. Davis have posted on iBrattleboro are for the most part harmless, yet completely unnecessary.

I am appalled by the fact that people who want a society of equality have such a difficult time when others simply do not agree with their opinions. Mr. Davis and my father are obviously in different parties politically. They differ in many ways. They do not agree with each other in many areas, but what ever gave Mr. Davis the right to launch a negative, nasty campaign on my father. For anyone who has not seen this "flyer" which has created such a stir, I invite you all to look at it courtesy of Mr. Davis on iBrattleboro. I believe it speaks volumes.

I will be the first to admit that my father and I are on very opposite ends of the political spectrum. I have many times voted in ways that my father has not. The thing about him which should be pointed out is he is fair. He may not agree with your opinion, but he will welcome it and acknowledge it. He will not tell you it is wrong.

I am proud of him and I am proud of the way he has conducted his campaign. He is the type of man we need in Montpelier, not Mr. Davis who appears to be a cantankerous individual who in my opinion will not allow our state to move forward in a positive direction.

For the record, my dad will not ever know of this letter unless it is published in your paper.

Fortunately these are generally seen as the lame & desperate attempts they are.

Using a friend or family member as human shield, as it gets his message out while escaping line of fire

Just another cowardly creep & crooked plolitician. Sketchy is as sketchy does.

Since neither of you live in Vernon or Guilford, it's really none of your business.

A nerve was struck I see. I'm sure if agreeing w/this shameless shilling for daddy & sickening attempt to appear 'neutral' you would have no problems w/comments. No surprises here.

Comments amazingly consistant & always predictable.

Go ahead NSD attack this teenage girl for defending her father. I suppose you are jealous. How is the relationship with your children going?

No attacks of 'teenagers' here. Onus directly upon dear old dad using teenage daughter as human shield removing the cowardly creep from line of fire & thereby making all those critical of this scumbag accused of atacking daughter.

An obviously desperate attempt of political gamesmanship & nothing more. Merely more machinations & customary chicanery courtesy of the crooked chicanery characterizing dad's campaign tactics.

"desparate" "human shield" "cowardly creep" "gamesmanship" "chicanery"....all I see is a teenage girl defending her father against a pathetic attack over next to nothing. You and Davis should be ashamed or yourselves. Go ahead attack the child for defending her father. It says much of you and little of the candidate or the daughter.

Character is important and actions taken in the past often point to what we can expect in the present and future.

Although even those who were wronged might agree that Mr. Hebert is a generally a cordial person on a personal level, it doesn't mean his political agenda and his actions haven't been detrimental for some folks over the years. Sure many woudl say he is a "nice guy", but have his actions been kind?

Hebert has run for office many times unsuccessfully. This suggests his politics may be pretty far out of the mainstream.

I have been looking for it, this "pathetic" and/or vicious "attack". I haven't gotten any emails from the Davis campaign nor have I seen anything pertaining to this on his FB campaign page. I have read the 2 threads on iBrattleboro too and failed to find any hint of a coordinated "attack" on Hebert nor on the staff of the Vernon paper. A handful of people pointed out a few things about Hebert's history that were not a part of his published resume. The BCTV board was the subject of numerous newspaper articles at the time as well as extensive coverage on iBrattleboro from eyewitnesses in many cases. Other's pointed out the oddness that a paper published at the town clerk's office and asking candidates to make payment for political ads at the town's main election official.

A political ad minimizing one candidate's experience and overstating another's (while omitting his less auspicious dealings) was published without stating that it was an ad and the wronged candidate complained about this as anyone likely would. I can't say whether Davis was cordial or nasty on the phone with the person from the paper. I suspect that all parties could have handled this situation better. At this point it could be argued that all three parties have sounded whiny and defensive.

This is supposed to be a well organized and formidable attack on Hebert???

I guess if i could find a little evidence of that I might be more sympathetic to that possibility.
iBrattleboro gets regular rounds of criticism for this because people make candid comments. Not all of the comments are nice and some percentage are not true, but many posters there have posted hundreds or thousands of articles and comments and are generally pretty reliable sources of information. I don't see any coordination or particular line of comment that suggest Richard Davis put a bunch of people up to anything. There are no talking points and the posters are the same people who comment on hundreds of different stories of every kind.

Let's keep the whining to a minimum and get on with the campaign. There is a debate coming up in a couple of weeks. Hopefully the positions of these two candidates will be amply illuminated at that time.

Who said it was a "well organized and formidable attack"? I think it is an attack by one or two anti Yankee nuts. Single issue folks.

Not vicious but pretty pathetic to attack a candidate's teenage daughter. Northstardust is a one issue emotional poster who hates Hebert because he supports relicensing VY. Otherwise Hebert and Northstardust have similar politics.

There was, in a post from Davis himself, the phone number of the Editor of the Vernon Paper. And a statement to the effect of call her and support me (I dont remember exact words.) I found it suddenly disappeared from the post after it was pointed out in a letter to the Reformer. My opinion of posting someones personal phone number online and telling people to call her is uncalled for and is harrasment. That being said I am not sure if Davis wasn't thinking when it posted it, or realized it was stupid after he did it. Either way it was very much wrong, and am glad to see that he did in fact remove it from his post.
