Why would they keep pumping it when Entergy claims it is harmless? Didn't they also claim it is not in the Ct river, and if it was it would be of no consequence? Is it possible we cannot trust what Entergy claims?

They are pumping it because the state asked them to continue. So they have. I find it funny antis yell because they stopped pumping, so they start again. Then the antis use that as a negative. Ridiculousness.

Having lived in the area for my entire life, it is discouraging to witness the ongoing decline and degradation of our land and waterways. I wonder when Americans will stand up to say, "Enough is enough!"

The NRC is clearly in the palm of Entergy and continues to disregard the safety of our citizens. The systemic reality (in my opinion) is that government at all levels has been purchased buy wealthy corporations and individuals while it continues to subsidize and reward them for destroying the domain of the common citizen.

It's time for citizens to stand up and remind the leaders of our crumbling country that we (ordinary citizens) are entitled to representation in return for our tax dollars. I remember when Vermont and the rest of this country wasn't a toilet for the rich...

I'm glad the State and VY are working together on this. It's how it ought to be, and it's how safety is maintained and our electricity needs are met. There will always be some adversarial relationship between manufacturers and state regulators and overseers. But if both sides understand each other, recognize each other's valuable function, and are seeking the same goals - safety and continued operation - it usually works out okay. My hope is that this spirit of cooperation continues on the contract negotiation and relicensing front as well.

You just have to bring the community into it....letting a regulator dance in the dark with VY lends to politcal self interest.

Vy should come out with...nothing ever will be done in the dark again at VY.

Not sure how old you are - but my husband who has lived here all his life, remembers when the CT river was whatever color paper they were making upstream and when you didn't want to swim in it. He says it's much better now.

The short answer:Public Trust Doctrine 2006 -07 amendments. Additionally the plant operates under zero discharge regulations.

New ground water legislation in 2006-07.

First they changed the law with the goal of closing Vermont Yankee.

Group: Leak violates public trust doctrine

"...But in 2008, a public trust provision concerning groundwater was enacted, expanding who could participate in any legal action regarding aquifer contamination, which could mean VNRC has standing to become an intervenor.."

Other reasons exist as well however.

I just see it as Entergy throwing a slow pitch at gov Shumlin...giving the gov a opportunity to hit the ball out of the park. Are they already in cahoots?

Entergy is signaling to Shumlin...play our ball, and you can expect to hit a lot of home runs.

Can't we at least be honest as to the make up of Peter Shumlin's aspiration?

That hammer is called the public trust, stated the Vermont Natural Resources Council, which asked the state's Public Service Board on Tuesday to allow it to become an official participant in the PSB's hearings over whether Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant should be issued a certificate of public good.
