truth is people think that the usage is more in these lake communities because there are of smaller population, but there are no more here than they are in non lake communities. You just hear about them more in small communities cause everyone knows everyone. In big cities people tend to not know u or your business.

I have heard rumors of drug dealers operating in Highland Lakes contrary to the police position that the source the kids use is dealers in Paterson. Take it for what you will, I cannot confirm it either way but I believe it.

to the truth : Stay in HL with your computer, your opinions, and all the other wannabe thug drug dealers up there that moved into low cost summer bungalow housing.

To srl you can easily figure out which areas in vernon or any other town in NJ are going to have drug problems... Check the average home prices in those lake communities as well as foreclosures.. Dont get me wrong not all of HL is bad and there are some nice homes there... It just seems the ratio of trash outnumbers the good

I have lived in Vernon for over 20 years. Although drugs are in every town there are some lake communities in Vernon that seem to attract it. I would stay away from Pleasant Valley Lake or Scenic Lakes. History of problems. There are MANY very nice people that live in those lake communities and not everyone is on drugs in those places. If you find a house you like in one of the places investigate your street and immediate neighbors to the best that you can.

I understand completely what you are saying. I will tell you this - I have lived in Vernon since the early 1980's and Pleasant Valley Lake has the absolute WORST reputation. Not just drugs but wife swapping - and other wierd stuff. The other lake communities are fine. I have a friend in Vernon Valley Lake and she loves it ! Never any problems with neighbors or wierdos... Good luck with your house hunt

Jean, that's exactly what I heard about the Highland Lakes/Barry Lakes area. Although now I hear that Scenic Lakes is pretty bad in the drug department. Probably because they are so far from the center of town, there is little in the way of police presence. The worst area is the condos.

sheesh I grew up in HL as did many and we are far from thugs in fact many of us are law enforcement, military, teachers and many other professionals. The thugs or want to be thugs were raised to be just that. Look at the ones in Cliffwood Lks., PVL and many other places. Look at the track records, where did they come from? Were their parents in trouble with the law, do drugs, alcoholics? Exactly. It's sad that any community gets a rep from the kids. Many were raised elsewhere and transplanted. Some being raised by grandparents who couldn't get it right the first time never mind the second.
All the communities have weirdos wife swappers thugs just have to decide where you feel comfortable
