If the lady didn't say anything why are they being reprimanded?

and so what? if the student acted like a hoodrat and was called on it, then pat the teacher on the back, she deserves praise for trying to steer a student in the right path. We need more like her!

A hood rat? I think its amusing b/c my choice of words for kids in school these days would have alot worse. When I was in school, which was not too long ago, anyone who played sports were called alot worse if we were to act out. Heck, even the kids walk around talking to one another like they are trash so I guess when a teacher makes a comment to one of them they dont think its ok for a teacher to say something that is not even near as wrose as what they call the girls they go to school with. I have recently been spending some time around some of the high school girls and to hear the things they say to each other is really crazy to me. And these girls are all friends and may be just "playing" with each other but its still vulger and out of line. I think it would be funny to have another student walk around with a hidden camera one day on the shirt or book bag and let some parents see how their "hood rats" are acting, really!

I too have been privy to having access to the halls of the local high schools. The language is very appalling. The camera is a good suggestion. The first person that needs to view it is the mother that is so upset and demanding that "The Yearling" be taken off the HS reading list. Let her see who uses the "n" word!!! It's those "of color" calling each other that.

As a high school teacher, I think that it's appalling that a teacher referred to her student in such a derogatory manner. Such loose-lipped language is unprofessional and inappropriate.

the teacher spoke truth, hard to swallow in this day and age of let them get away with murder. She was RIGHT in her remark and the parents of these overspoken students need to step up and quit blaming the teachers. Its a shame and a scandal. Students words are disgusting and yet we blame the teacher for calling a spade a spade. Good luck Mrs. Rogers, my child will be with you before long, thankfully!

Believe me, I know this lady and know how hateful she is. She is our schools cheerleading coach and definetly said it in a racist way and did say it. A lot of students were there when she said it and were in shock she actually said it. The kids were horseplaying like kids do and she had no right to say it.

Is she hateful b/c she actually puts her feet down and does not take any "horseplay" from the kids? I am sure she did not mean it racist b/c black or white how is hoodrat a racist comment? I know white and black people who live in the "hood." Right in Vernon we have a "hood" and its all white people that live there. I'm just saying I am glad that the "younger" teachers can put up with the kids these days. Its the older teachers that are not sure how to handle them and tend to just ignore the behavior and/or just send them to good ole Mrs Register.
I partially agree

I agree with the above statement except for the "hood" remark. A "hoodrat" has nothing to do with "the hood" and to my knowledge there is no "hood" area in Vernon. Typical stereotype of lower income families in that area shouldn't be tolerated, but just as above posted shows it truly is. Cudos to the teacher, shame on "call it"

Have you visited Vernon lately??? I mean the streets back behind the old highschool are what I could call the "hood." In the past few years there have been more drug activity in that area than anywhere else in Vernon. I was born and raised in the area and those streets, with the exception of a few like Mrs Nichols, most that live back there are up to no good. In the case where the teacher called the kids "hoodrats" it was just a figure of speech for her to use but "hoodrat" used in real terms originated from the "hood." Glad that someone does agree with me partially though!:)

The streets back behind the old highschool are the same from one of my visits to the next for the past 30 years! No difference, except for a few renters. No "hood" just poor working class folk trying to make ends meet. I guess you'd have to "know" more than just mrs. nichols to understand that there is no hood in vernon. Just a few wayward teenage types running the streets wanting to be gangs, but in this day and age, that place is a church social compared to larger. The comment by that teacher I'd imagine was an expression of someone she didn't want her students to act like, but has absolutely nothing to do with that town. btw, have ya checked out the trailor park on the "other side" of hwy 79, its the worst in that town but still no "hood".

Check the SO report in that area and you'll find the drug activity isn't taking place in the area you posted about. Pat the teacher on the back for TEACHING girls to be anything other than ladies, but don't judge an area because they are poor. Just saying...
