This a good example of what happens when someone is not wearing a seatbelt or straped into a carseat. The kids were thrown around inside of an out of control vehicle and eventually thrown out when one or more of its doors/windows popped open. If they had been properly restained, they mostly would be alive today. It appears the driver and passenger were seat belted, if only they had thought of the kid's safety too. Of course, her lack of a driver's license and her record show that would be the farthest thing from her mind.

When traveling many people let their kids sleep unbelted in the backseat. Not a very good choice obviously but she wasn't the first or the last to this stupid stupid thing. Those poor babies, what a horrible way to perish.

This is a HORRIBLE accident, kids should ALWAYS wear seatbelts no matter what. Why would u risk killing your children over 30 seconds of your time not putting a seatbelt on? It's crazy

No, she should not have been driving without a license. That's a given.

But I don't know, it seems odd to me that the adults would put seatbelts on themselves but not on the kids. I wouldn't be surprised if the older two took off their own seatbelts, and maybe in boredom was playing with the baby's carseat. I mean, why would she have bothered with the car seat at all then?

I believe in seat belts now of course, but I when I was a kid I HATED the seatbelt but knew my Mom wanted me to wear it, so I'd quietly slip it off whenever I could and not make it obvious.

Looking back on it, if we had gotten into an accident I could just as easily have gotten thrown from the vehicle, and if we had the internet, my Mom would have been thrown to the wolves for wearing her seatbelt and not "bothering" to buckle me up, when the reality was it was me always taking it back off. Yes she did check, but because she was driving she couldn't constantly be looking at me, and I got smart enough to make it look like the belt was still across my lap when she did.

So let's not jump to conclusions on that point at least.

Heather sorry but I'd have to disagree with you. I've seen people do some pretty stupid things recently but this tops them. I think the theory of the kids unstrapping their baby brother is remote. My sister has the same car seat (piece of junk really evenflo is crap) but when you unstrap the carseat there is a loud sound.

By having been cited 12 times for not being licensed since 2001. And deemed not fit to operate a motor vehicle in 2006 I don't believe safety was any part of what she was thinking that day.

I always make sure to check on my kids when on a trip to make sure they are still belted in they're car seats.

I seriously hope this woman gets jail time for this. Those childrens FatherS must be really heartbroken my heart goes out to all 3 of them.

On July 15, I was east bound on 2 passing Avon Commons when I saw a late model blue-green Honda Accord (early 90's) and I was horrified when I saw the infant carseat facing forwards in the backseat. There are so many warnings on an infant car seat instructing parents that infant car seats are only to be facing backwards. The one day I didn't have my cell phone. I went home and installed my infant's car seat facing forwards to see if it would keep a child in the car seat. Of course what I thought would happen happened. The carseat was able to flip forwards. And the seat belt wasn't able to buckle properly. I am sure they live in that general area and I will be watching to see if I see that car with forward facing infant seat (carrier type) again because I will be calling police next time. Hopefully this case is a wake up call to them and they properly install they're children's car seats.

As for the mom, She has been caught before being careless and wow there are no words to discribe the stupidity of this
"woman"

On a side note I wonder what kind of training MI gives its drivers because I can bet the farm whenever I'm driving on the turnpike I'll see a car with an MI plate that they're driving crazy.

I was driving a few weeks ago after getting out of cedar point and a MI car with no lights nearly ran me off the road (it was after midnight!).

i cant believe this woman! this whole thing makes me sick to my stomach how can you sit there and make sure you and your other ADULT passengers are buckled in but say SCREW my kids they will be fine. and wait a minute 3 kids and she didnt even have the 5 month old properly in the carseat. people like her should not even try to be a mother if they dont want to take care of them. so now she has 2 kids possibly 3 to bury all because she didnt know how to drive and shouldnt of been behind the wheel she needs to fry in hell for what she has done. this serves as a good lesson to everyone if you dont want your kids then you should give them to a family that will take care of them and also dont drive if you dont have a license especially if even the state you are from says you arent able to operate a vehicle safely may god keep this children in his arms they are the ones we feel sorry for in the end not her or her other adult passengers for that matter.

Here it is in a nutshell
She had no license -broke the law
no seat belt for kids-broke the law
what gets me, she made sure her and her companion was in their seat belts-----
she needs to be charged with manslaughter because she was driving with no license and no seat belts on kids

You people kill me with all ur comments abiut my niece!! Yes ther ar things that could've been different but she is already paying he ultimate price....losing her children!!! We all know traveling with children may be uncomfrtable foe the kid. How many times have YOU taken a long trip your child ended up taking th seat belt off? She & my family is going threw enough WITHOUT your disrespect. The media has made her life more tan a living HELL!! LIFE IN JAIL? You are the idiot Julie Kennedy for asking for such a harsh sentence. Can u all just pray for her & the family!! What if this happened to someone close to you? Don't judge...that's god JOB (DIDN'T KNOW HE WAS TAKIN APPS FOR HIS JOB)!! This is about the children at this point who can't get a proper burial!!! We can't get any positive help from the media in asking for the prper burial of my niece & nefew. We have set up THE PATRICK FAMILY MEMORIAL at Comerica Bank which the media won't air. THANKS FOR HOW RUDE U CAN BE....WE NEED YOUR PRAYERS NOT UR RUDE COMMENTS!!! THANK U & MAY GOD BLESS US ALL

My heart goes out to the family however the mother made horrid decisions. You buckle yourself up and not your children? You were driving at a high rate of speed and didn't think of the consequences. I am sure you didn't need to get anywhere in a hurry at 230am. I am disgusted that anyone makes excuses for such behavior and irresponsibility. I agree with you on that she will be paying the ultimate price of living with knowing she killed her children however that is not good enough. After as many "traffic violations" she has had WITHOUT a license.. she obviously didn't care. How do you continue to get ticketed and not having something more done about that? Like jail time or something???

There is NO excuses you can give me to change my mind. She is irresponsible and should be thrown in jail.

to victims aunt:

sorry for your loss, your niece is a self centered fool who should have never had children, she obviously lacks the basic common sense one needs to own a pet.
