I can honestly see them doing something so risky. They are in it for the numbers and keeping those up so they keep their job.

This is a stupid Anti-army Post Dispatch.... Why did you post this? DUMB....tells nothing of consequence and shows a lack of anything real to report.

How dare those recruiters endanger some poor fat kid before he has a chance to go occupy some other country and kill some of their civilians, before ultimately coming home broken in the head!!!

Wow! This guy must've really wanted to serve his country really bad. Kudos to him. A lot of other people think this country is all bad. This guy obviously didn't think that way of the country that he loved so much. My most heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathies go out to the family.

I don't think this is anti-Army. It doesn't matter who coached this young man in his pursuit to lose weight, the fact is he's dead. It's news, because what this young man did was very dangerous. And there are many young men and women who do things like this all the time. No matter what the end goal is, there are healthy and unhealthy ways to lose weight. Unfortunately, people usually want to see fast results and are drawn to the unhealthy ways. News stories like this remind us that some methods aren't just unhealthy, they can be deadly.

Also, for those of you think this is hilarious . . . try to imagine that it was your son or brother who died. Show some respect to the deceased's family.

If you read the story - he started the diet BEFORE he talked to recruiters. Why doesn't the mother sue herself. She raised him. He probably became overweight during her watch. Don't blame the Army. You should be thanking them. It's because of them you can write a post blaming them.

Women have been dying from dieting for years. Their goal: To look thin enough for society to accept them, or look like a magazine model.

Columbus is over run with 250 lb women so it might do them so good to lose some weight.Unless a woman is very tall anything over 160 lbs is excessive.

You sound like a fat kid in mom's basement playing black ops that was rejected by the recruiters

While it is so sad that this young man died, I cannot for a minute put it on the recruiter. Yes, they want the numbers, its their job - but from what I understand, the armed services aren't so desperate for new recruits. The military personnel working at the recruiting stations are just that "military personnel" they are NOT diet counselors and surely do not claim to be.

I think it is terribly wrong to blame it on the Recruiter and wish peace to the family of this young man who died trying so hard to serve his country.

God Bless the USA!

I agree totally. This young man obviously wanted to serve his country so bad that he put his life at risk. It sounds like the mother is distraught, as she has every right to be, but since he started the diet before he spoke to recruiters, she can't blame the recruiters. Sincere sympathies to his family.

Either those recruiters are criminally responsible, or this kid deserves a Darwin Award.
