This landfill will threaten the air and water quality in Fountain County permanently. I don't know what kind of legacy the people of Fountain County want to leave their grandchildren, but a huge pile of decomposing waste shouldn't be it.
Untold numbers of people and children will be forced to drink from wells contaminated by the toxic slurry of liquified plastics, pharmaceuticals, industrial waste, and other nasties.
This landfill will turn Fountain County into a receptacle for out-of-state trash. Who knows what else will be dumped in there, waiting for future Hoosiers to have to deal with.
I don't see how a three-man board should be allowed to make decisions which will affect the quality of life for so many thousands. Sure, there's economic opportunity available for selling out. By why not join in the strip mining, uranium disposal, and all sorts of other profitable industries? Let's leave that for the others.
Sustainability has become the mantra for good reason. As the melting glaciers attest, our planet is changing, most likely as a result of man-made impacts. We have a choice to continue to do as we have--and get what we've always gotten--or to forge a more durable future as our legacy. Sacrifices will be required, but saying no to the dump will be a choice that preserves Fountain County's tremendous natural heritage, something precious and undervalued by those who want to make a quick buck.
