Hi,
Anyone know what the status is with the property that used to be occupied by Camp Shawnee? |
||||
No, but I've been looking for old Camp Shawnee people for a long time - I went there from around 1965-1971 or so. Are you an old camper. e-mail me at jsgnik@aol.com |

Yes - I drove by the property this summer. The property is a summer orthodox jewish camp. Infrastructure is very run down as the fields out front, old buildings and activities locations are very weathered and unpainted. The General Store down the dirt road that leads you to Highway 170) is now a single family house.

I was there in October, took lots of pictures of the entire camp. Even visited with Joe Fobes, who still is the cartaker for the property. The Jewish camp is in disrepair, and has not been used for years. It may actually go up for sale soon.
The stables and coral are gone, bu the building is still there used for storage and about ready to fall down. The place is full of old trailers. The lake is filling in a bit but the Qusad is still recognizable. I was one of the oringal campers back in 1961, only 6 years old at the time. Kept going until it just got too built up, and the year the rec hall got struck by lightning was my last year. If anyone wants to reserect the Shawnee site, I'm in. Gerstein2@aol.com |

Haven't heard the name Joe Fobes in a LONG time - I was there from the mid '60's until around 1971 or so. I remember the rec hall burning down like it was yesterday - Dave McClay telling everyone to stay in the dining hall as it burnt to the ground. If you can, send me some of your pix - would be very interested to see them. Maybe there's a Shawnee reunion out there somewhere...

Joe Fobes is my uncle and I actually worked at the Camp in the dining hall during the summers of 69 & 70. I visit back there every few years and stay in touch with Joe's kids & spend time with Joe when I visit. It's been a long time...the Blands, O'Connors and Rotellas were some of the families I remember that pretty much ran the place when I worked there. I'm curious on what happened to a lot of the folks! If there's anything I can do, let me know.

John,
Was your brother Danny with the Asthma?
|
||||
Bill, I believe we were in the same bunk for a couple of years! I saw your question about Danny and then saw your name. I even think that we used to play GI Joes, I have your name inside the GI Joe Footlocker I still have. My family has been going back to the Wayne County Fair in August as a way to stay connected to Camp. Your mom was the nurse, right? I see by some of the other posts, maybe there is hope for a reunion. My brothers and I last year went and were checking out who owns it and if it could be purchased. |

HI!

||||
Hi Al, believe it or not, I remember you well. My parents (Barbara and Ed) and my brothers and sisters were all there, from 1968 to 1974. I hope you are all well! We have been making it a tradition the last few years to go to the Wayne County Fair in August. If you're interested, I can email you the date and we can have a mini-reunion. |
||||
Robby, Sorry been busy. Yes she was the nurse at camp for 3 years. |

Hi all...nice to see Camp Shawnee remembered.
Does anyone remember that they broke the 1969 color war at the Wayne County Fair? I'll always remember Allie Rotella coming out as Ghengis Kahn and Mitch Heller coming out as Napoleon. |

Hi, I'm Stacy Selinger (maiden name) and was happy to find this thread. Can anyone tell me the location of the Camp Shawnee by way of Topozone? I was there from mid 60s to early 70's -- 7 summers! I also have great memories and crazy memories, from putting on the plays, Fiddler on the Roof, and Tommy; playing jacks, picking blueberries, over-nights, and a thousand more! Color war was so intense!..Would like to hear from some of the girls! I have a photo album with some great photos from around '69!

Stacey,
I'll let you know. I am going to stop by on the bike on the way to Sturgis beginning of August.

Hi Bob,
That memory is very vivid for me, and I was only 8 years old! My parents worked there and we attended from 68 to 74 roughly. My brothers and sisters have begun meeting at the Wayne County Fair for the last few years to relive the Camp Shawnee days. Have stopped by the Camp site too, although it's basically abandoned. Do you remember any brothers, sisters or my parents Barbara and Ed O'Connor? I have a web site: www.campshawnee.com , but an still working on it. Any photos from those days? Hi Stacy,
I'm Robby O'Connor. We attended same years, and I'm almost positive I remember you, especially when you mentioned the plays. Were you in charge of drama? My parents worked there , Barbara and Ed O'Connor. If you have pictures, would love to see them. I'm working on a web site: www.campshawnee.com and am going to try to post pictures. Our family has tons. roboconnor8@cox.net

Hi Bob,
I think I know your sister. Ha Ha. I think that this is a great idea to find some of the folks that went to Camp Shawnee. I have some of my best memories from Camp Shawnee. I can even recite some of the Color War songs in a heartbeat. It would be great to hear from anyone from 1968 - 1975. I was only 5 at the start of the summer. Turned six in July. Sure do miss the wooden paddle on my birthday each year. Carolyn |
