It's obvious Kulo has no journalism degree and does not understand or care about the basic tenet of objectivity of which he has none. Known as a local hot head who when crossed will travel down, way down the low road in an attempt at the jugular. The fact the Mississippi Press would allow a reporter this kind of out of bounds reporting speaks Iill of them either as an organization or his editor simply sucks and should be fired. A reporter who reports a story then writes an opinion about the same story violates all rules of objectivity. He went from reporting a story to trying to create one.

What is obvious to most is the fact that Kulo has a real problem with the current Mayor of Ocean Springs. The aldermen all knew about Taranto wanting to stay on for the additional 10 months. As someone said Kulo and Taranto have probably been planning this opinion piece over a few drinks down at Kwitkys or the Office and then probably met at Woodys so Taranto could approve the final draft prior to the Press publishing it. I guess the next thing that will happen is the OSSB attorney will represent Taranto in some type of legal action against the OSBOA. The OS School System is getting ready to make some very deep cuts and this will all be announced very soon. Was too much money spent by the OSSB while Sharon Walker was in charge with her yes man by her side? The obvious answer is yes. Watch for proof of this very soon.

The bottom line is that by virtue of having being elected to office the BOA has the sole power of choosing whoever they want to serve on the school board. And it's obvious it was decided to not even consider Taranto. They simply wanted him gone and it's their call and there are no legal ramifications. Btw... The current School Board President, Smith, is in her last year and will not be reappointed so many changes lie ahead.

Might be time to think about a new board attorney also. He seems more interested in who the board members are than serving whomever the BOA decide on. Taranto was not even a consideration and Smith would never be appointed again due to her recent actions. Need people on the OSSB that take the taxpayers into consideration over "fishy deals" that have gone on.

The saddest thing of all is there seems to be way to much senseless drama... why don't we get some people appointed that are actually concerned about the school district

Because the morons running the district are "good old boys" or "good old girls."

Hirsch got out when he did because he probably realized bad sh** was on the way & got out before the various factions started fighting & took away the influence he had earned.

Ms. Potter is an out of towner for the most part & she's running the district the way she would if she lived up north. The school board was and still to a degree is controlled by good old girl morons who don't know sh)t. These are the same ones who wanted to put a 25 yr old sorority girl on the school board rather than somebody with teaching experience because the sorority girl's dad is some kind of prominent downtown social figure.....that's the IQ & gist of the fools you're dealing with.

That girl who was running a few months ago for the school board. She was like 25 & a new lawyer or something....she almost made it on the school board....

Oh yes I remember her now. But I thought she submitted her resume like the dozen others and made it in the final three but was not selected as the choice of the aldermen. I would not think she was the choice of many if she was not selected. Must have impressed some of them though. I personally think they need new blood not older retired teachers to serve. Mr. Carter was an excellent choice because of the business experience he brings.

Well of course they "liked her" regardless of the "application process" -- they're all friends with her family, obviously. That's why she was picked over people who had 30 yrs experience teaching or in various administration roles in various school districts. Good old boy crap, the same reason this drama is going down.

I don't know Carter one way or the other but he's better than a sorority girl. She almost won too, she lost by a single vote if my memory of the news articles serves me correctly. Which is scary that these idiots would actually let such a ridiculous thing get as far as it did. If you haven't even hit 35 yet you really have no business applying to join a school board unless you have a doctorate in education & are an academic expert on the subject. And even then you'd probably apply to work in the district rather than joining the school board.

I can tell why the school district approved that boondoggle of a school though even though they maxed out their millage & almost maxed out their bond issuance ability. These are the same morons who wanted to put a 25 yr old sorority girl with no background in education on the school board that controls what was it? Like an 80 or 90 million dollar budget? lololol.

Screws are loose somewhere & the good old boy politics crap is reaching its peak. Hopefully with the Walkers gone & the Feds snooping around to clean house this state will begin to reform itself.

But the district is in deep sh*t. As somebody else put it in that other thread I posted in "layoffs are coming."

They can't raise taxes any more. They're in "not filling open positions" mode now. Which means when a counselor or janitor resigns they don't fill the position, they just "do more with less." Layoffs come next, then bigger class sizes, then more "not filling positions"/cutting sports/cutting goodies & benefits then they default on the bonds & file Ch. 9 bankruptcy. That's probably 10 or 15 yrs away, but its coming too.

I don't know Mr. Carter but I hope he can restore sanity. And saying "do more with less" isn't a silver bullet solution. They're already doing that. They need to restructure their bonds, assuming the bondholders will do it. The top heavy administration need to take a pay hit too, & that's probably not going to happen.

OS isn't like Goula, they can't rely on Chevron & Ingalls to keep their district solvent while the illegal alien brats siphon off funds from the other students & from district staff payroll. I have friends who teach or did teach at OS high & OS middle & it would be sad to see them go under because they couldn't control their spending.

Another thing -- "new blood" isn't a good thing in & of itself. Meaning "getting new faces in for the sake of doing so" isn't smart policy.

When Thad Cochran either dies or retires we're screwed man. No matter if McDaniel that loon wins or if another Republican wins nobody will have the seniority Thad can pull.

In the same sense, having "new blood" in a local school district isn't smart if the idiot you hire is a kid his/herself or has no trade knowledge in the education field.

Gulf, for somebody who is not a resident of Ocean Springs you sure are full of negative opinions about everything that goes on over here. I always enjoy reading your posts because they are usually the opposite of the facts or truth. You, on some days have Ingalls closing and Jackson County being the capitol of illegal aliens, USA. You complain about employment or your lack of but probably never thought it could be because of your negative attitude. Everything that happens is "Good old boy crap" no matter what it is. You are obviously anti-female when you refer to a young lady who has a law degree and practices with a well known firm, Jones-Walker and takes her time to make application to serve on a school board. When she finishes in the top three it is more of the "Good old boy crap" not the fact that she might have done well. What have you volunteered/applied for lately? What is your degree in? Just like when Trent Lott stepped down, the departure of Thad Cochran will not be the end of the world for Mississippi. He deserves to go home and relax for his remaining years and someone from our state deserves to go to Washington on our behalf. One thing is for certain, it will not be you. The only thing I have ever seen you offer is a very negative view of your surroundings and all things Mississippi, a state where I was born in and love.Good day si,r if that is mentally possible for you.

Here's part 2:

"You are obviously anti-female when you refer to a young lady who has a law degree and practices with a well known firm, Jones-Walker and takes her time to make application to serve on a school board."

LOL -- in order to work in surgery you have to go to medical school. In order to get a job welding you have to have either trade school experience or on the job experience & be able to pass a test to get a job welding. In order to be a teacher you have to @least have passed the PRAXIS test & in many instances need a bachelor's or higher just to make a lousy 40k/yr acting as a glorified babysitter. In order to understand school district issues you either need experience – and I mean a decade or more teaching/in administration/as a principal/school official or you need a doctorate in education from a qualified university in order to properly understand the issues. There was actually a candidate you fool WHO HAD A DOCTORATE – don't recall the name but I do remember the degree in education who was passed over. This is the lunacy that exists down here. This is just a generalization but its a pretty good one: don't ever trust anybody under the age of 35 with a budget over a million bucks because they probably don't know what the f*ck they're doing. Somebody wet behind the yrs & just out of college & with NO EXPERIENCE and NO ACADEMIC(you know, a college degree) background in either budgeting or education has NO BUSINESS being on a school board to which they have no technical background to add.

Would you hire a nurse or a cop to build your house if they had no contracting experience? What does a sorority girl fresh out of law school know about school boards or school district budgeting or administration? Answer: nothing. She "knows people" socially. Hence why she even got the f*ckin consideration in the 1st place and another reason why the podunk hicks in the northern part of this state will always run rings around the drunks & fools down here & why the federal govt will always treat this state like a redheaded b*stard stepchild.

“When she finishes in the top three it is more of the "Good old boy crap" not the fact that she might have done well.”

Done well at what? A job interview? Any pretty face with 100 bucks worth of make up & a nice smile will “interview well.” Who cares how somebody interviews you fool. Would you hire a lawyer to be a school superintendent? No, of course not. So why hire them for the school board. You hire them because of their expertise or academic background in education or experience teaching & trade knowledge gained thru yrs of hard work, not because you answer questions in a perky manner when the old farts on the BOA are flattered by a pretty 20something sorority girl w/a cute smile & a perky demeanor.

“What have you volunteered/applied for lately?”

Again you fool volunteering/applying for a job doesn't make you qualified for sh*t. The other candidate she was facing had years of experience if I recall correctly teaching or working in the district. That's why they're qualified. Are you really that superficial? You would hire somebody to oversee an 80 MILLION DOLLAR BUDGET because they smile pretty & volunteer & are well intentioned? At least the guy they hired is an older guy & a businessman with years of experience running a business & a budget. He wouldn't have been my 1st pick but he's better than her. Again –“layoffs are coming” as somebody put it.

Guess we need a part 3....

Part 3:

“What is your degree in?”

Not in education, I don't have the nerves to put up with kids or their needy parents or whiny good old girl politicians & social climbers backstabbing me because I don't kiss their ass. But I do shop in Ocean Springs and pay taxes there & paid property taxes & sales taxes there for yrs. And as I said – I have friends who work for the district WHO WILL BE LAID OFF because of the budgeting foolery being pushed right now & their over-ambitiousness. This is peoples' tax dollars you're talking about here, this isn't a personal slush fund for the Walkers & a few of their friends to play with....

“Just like when Trent Lott stepped down, the departure of Thad Cochran will not be the end of the world for Mississippi. He deserves to go home and relax for his remaining years and someone from our state deserves to go to Washington on our behalf.”

The 1 thing I always liked about the good old boys & the rednecks who control local politics & school boards & all that is that at the end of the day they tend to be reasonable. They might be dirty but so are all politicians. They always at the end of the day bring home the bacon & take care of their boys. But most of all – they do things right. You can't do that with Connie Moron & the artsy “good old girl” crowd. Those idiots think money never ends & wants to use public money to help their friends & to build OS(and if they could the rest of the coast) into a effiminate arttown with a small bartown they can troll so they don't have to risk DUIs by going to get drunk in Biloxi at the casinos.

They overspend, overdream & have no budgeting skills. At least the good old boys can budget & stick within that budget & are generally speaking good for their jobs.

The Walkers/Connies are worse because they loot the public purse & only get caught when they f*ck up & are caught by the Feds who come in & clean house when they put their fingers in the federal til. That's a no-no. Walker's just the tip of the iceberg. They all double dip. He just got caught because he took federal money & they always ask questions because the federal govt is the only entity worth a sh*t any more in this corrupt declining country.

“One thing is for certain, it will not be you. The only thing I have ever seen you offer is a very negative view of your surroundings and all things Mississippi, a state where I was born in and love.Good day si,r if that is mentally possible for you.”

My family has been here since the early 1800s when my great something grandfather came here as a Federal Indian Agent & married a Choctaw woman. Considering I have Choctaw ancestry, my family's been here for centuries, or even millenia.

I'd argue you don't love this place, you just love your social standing and lifestyle in it.

Because if you knew what you were talking about, with due respect – you'd know that once you leave OS & go into Gautier & east or north Jackson county things aren't peachy keen. And over here we have to WORK FOR OUR MONEY & we don't have social connections to get us jobs. As for your young lawyer friend I suggest you google “law schools young lawyers not finding jobs”– the face she even found a job probably means her family's social connections got her junior partner status.

Because there are lots of lawyers who can't find work ANYWHERE doing ANYTHING. No govt law work, no DA work, no criminal defense work, no nothing. Firms aren't hiring. At her age, you don't get a job with a cushy firm locally unless you know somebody. I should know, I was pre-law briefly when I attended college & realized the legal profession is imploding as outsourcing & automation are making many young lawyers irrelevant....but you wouldn't know that, would you? Go ask Jerry Dalgo or John McKay or some of the other good old boys what the budgetary situation is like, its not pretty or as upbeat as you make it.

"for somebody who is not a resident of Ocean Springs you sure are full of negative opinions about everything that goes on over here. I always enjoy reading your posts because they are usually the opposite of the facts or truth."

1st, flattered you like my stuff. Now as for "why I care." I lived in OS for YEARS, over a decade & paid taxes for the schools & still shop in OS & pay a lot of sales taxes when I go there. So my money still goes to finance your skills. As I also noted, I have friends who work in the district & they're going to be losing their employment because of the fiscal mismanagement of the last few yrs.

"on some days have Ingalls closing"

My grandfather worked at Avondale for a time decades ago. Had you told him or anybody back then it would shutter because of defense budget cuts they'd have laughed your ass out the door. In the 70s there were 40k workers out there & even more contractors. Now? About 10-12k. In case you haven't been reading the news the govt is shrinking the military budget. That means less $ to go around. Bath Ironworks in Maine is furiously competitive with us for those contracts. Hungtington also has a huge yard in Virginia & other yards that competes with them. Ingalls would rather move their contracts to one central location -- aka Norfolk, to avoid having to come way down here & the added expense of shuttling their employees around. That's why they shut their offices in Singing River Mall down & that's why the big office building they were going to build in downtown Goula never happened. Ingalls isn't closed yet but when the contracts dry up in about 10 to 20 yrs, it will. There was hope Avondale could build oil industry ships/barges but it didn't work out. I suspect Ingalls will do the same. And even then look @Halter & Singal's yards, they're a fraction the size of Ingalls. Ingalls could still "be there" but their employment footprint will shrink in half, or more by 2030. And it has to, the govt is broke.

"Jackson County being the capitol of illegal aliens, USA."

No. But there sure as all hell are a lot of them here. Also lots of P. Ricans. Though they're citizens. Goula is now 5% PR. Most of the rest of the latinos in Jackson Co. are illegal wetbacks who need to be deported. I know, I've been looking for construction work & they outbid every white & black contractor by 50% usually. They work for nothing & don't want union representation like I do.

"You complain about employment or your lack of but probably never thought it could be because of your negative attitude. Everything that happens is "Good old boy crap" no matter what it is."

That's because this state is the pariah of the nation. Look @the Walker drama -- it took the Feds coming in to clean house. Those idiots only got in trouble BECAUSE THEY PUT THEIR FINGERS IN THE FEDERAL COOKIE JAR. Every state cookie jar was overlooked by the corrupt good old boys. The feds are the only competent entity to clean house & those blind/deaf idiots were so ambivalent to their surroundings that they deluding themselves the feds wouldn't bust their f*ckin balls.

The federal govt is the ONLY entity left in this region keeping this corpse of a state alive. Ingalls, Keesler, Seabee base, Camp Shelby, NASA/Stennis, I don't understand Palazzo & the idiots around here. If it wasn't for the federal govt this whole region would be totally f*cked.

But like you say I'm a negative nancy -- yea there's also a thing called a pollyanna & there are people I call "the got theirs." There are some ppl who have enough $ to live good & so long as the paychecks keep coming in they don't give a rip. The country could be burning down & crime could be shooting thru the roof & so long as you live in your rich neighborhood & have your cushy job then everything is peachy keen, am I right? You've "got yours." Sadly the rest of us don't.

Another thing, women now are enrolling in college over men at a rate of 60% to 40%. You people will run everything in 20 years. I recommend you read this:

http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2...

....because this recession we're in now(and the current "recovery" is a jobless recovery) is often called the "mancession" because manufacturing & construction & other male trades have been hit the hardest. The only job sectors still standing are female dominating trades like health care.

If you haven't been scarred by this deep recession/depression we're in right now chances are you're in a field that's "recession-proof" -- and nothing short of the country breaking into civil war will affect your income....

In which case there isn't much to talk about because nothing I say will change your mind.

Also about your lawyer friend. The fact she even has a job says ALL I NEED TO KNOW. If you knew what you were talking about you'd know that lawyers cant' find work right now:

http://boston.cbslocal.com/2012/04/04/law-sch...

http://www.forbes.com/sites/ryancalo/2013/11/...

If you're under the age of 35, again, you have NO BUSINESS being on the school board because you have NO IDEA what you're talking about.....

And as I said -- you people wanted to hire somebody who doesn't even have a background in budgeting or education -- I'd consider somebody who's 30 with a doctorate in education to be on the schoolboard -- but a lawyer?

And like I said -- is it ANY WONDER the school district is about to be in deep sh-t in a few yrs now that millage is maxed out. And what that means is that they can't raise taxes any more. Which means they have no new way of raising revenue. The only thing they can do now is issue debt(which increases your risk of default & Chapter 9 bankruptcy) & lay people off. And of course the more debt you have the lower your credit rating & the higher your interest rate on those bonds -- the more you pay out of your budget. We're broke. That's what I'm saying. And if you can't see that chances are you never will until it slaps you in the f-ing face...

Good luck to you and yours.

Gulf,After reading your repeated rant I must say I am concerned about your mental stability. You did confirm everything I stated in my previous post. Thank goodness no one pays any attention to your negative opinions about our state and the people who live here. Your need to use profanity further proves my point that you are unemployed and miserable because of you. Because someone is educated and successful you are extremely jealous and resentful. While I cannot help you over the internet I do suggest you seek out a professional who can possibly help you work thru your many issues. While the "sorority girl" lawyer, the good old boys, the shipyard workers, the Puerto Ricans, the Mexicans, and the rest of the productive people in Mississippi get up this morning to go to their place of employment you will be waking up in your teepee and then check to see if any union construction jobs are open(probably none in Ms. ever) right after you look to see how many weeks of unemployment you have left to draw. Might be time to call a good old boy for some help. You have a good day Gulf if that is even remotely possible. I am going to have a great day right here on the gulf coast of this terrible place called Mississippi.
