Horrible tragedy and great loss for the Vancleave Community with the loss of Shyla VanAlstine, her husband Phillip and oldest daughter Haylie. I wish Kaytie a speedy recovery and healing hearts for the entire family.

I cannot begin to express the feelings of the Baton Rouge community this was a horrible tradgedy and many here are stunned over this horrific accident. I hope the person(s) that caused this accident will be proscuted to the fullest - May this family find solice in one another as they come to terms with this loss and may the surviving member of the family go on to lead a healthly long life - we are praying for this family as well as the community.

St. Francisville, LA?
"Prossecuted to the fullest"?????
There was no alcohol involved and it was late morning in a stretch of town which is notorious for accidents.
Haven't YOU ever gotten in an accident, perhaps one where you were at fault?
They happen all day long in every city in the country without these deadly results....
The real irony was that they were 200 yards from the Range Rd. exit where they were going shopping at Bass Pro...200 yards!

Cindy,

I think BHB means the lady behind them should proscecuted to the fullest for aggressive driving, tailgaiting, the reckless actions THAT CAUSED THE ACCIDENT. Just because a lot of people get in wrecks in BR doesn't mean no one is ever at fault.

If she hadnt killed anyone it would be different, but seeing as she killed not one but three people for tailgating i think she should be proscecuted. Sometimes you have to grow up and take respondsibitly for ur actions Cindy. Even if not she does have to live the rest of her life with that.

yes, she will have to live the rest of her life with this (I'm Sure) unintentional ACCIDENT. I believe she should be punished but not to the fullest extent if that means the same as a murderer would be punished.
What if the woman who caused the accident was your sister, daughter, or mother?
It is very sad that this happened, I see people tailgating on the interstate all the time. A stiff penalty should be given and she should serve some time for her action, but I'm quite sure this woman is in a living hell right now realizing what she caused.
I tried to imagine if this had happened to my family, I would be furious with the driver and expect some serious consequence but not as if she intentionally caused the deaths.
Her punishment will be severe when she has to relive the moment in her mind over and over for the rest of her days.
I hope this is a lesson to those who travel irresponsibly in the death traps we call cars.
The tragedy for this family is great and they are in my families prayers.
We all should hug our family often because at any given day we could each be in the same situation either the cause or the problem and we should remember that before we judge too harshly.

Shyla, Phillip, and Haylie were 3 awesome people.... The town of Vancleave are in much disbelief of this horrific accident. But, the concern is not "who did it, and how they should be punished" its the 2 babies that were left behind..... Please keep them in mind.
We love you Shlya, Phillip, and Haylie-Bug...

My sister was the woman involved in the accident. Out whole family is distraught over the accident and our hearts and prayers go out to the VanAlstine family. We pray that all who knew the VanAlstine family will receive peace and comfort through Jesus. We are asking our individual churches that we attend to remember this family in their prayers.

Its a tragic accident, but i have to agree that folks need to be cited and spend maybe a week or two in jail for tailgating. I see it everyday on the interstates. People tailgate and hang where you can see them in the left mirror as if they are trying to push you. I think the tailgater should be prosecuted and given more than a slap on the wrist. If i left my loaded gun on the counter and some kid picked it up and shot 3 people should i be prosecuted? Yes i should its careless disregaurd for saftey and well being of others in the general public. A motor vehicle is no different, if used in a wreckless irresponsible manner and you take a human life you should be prosecuted. No alcohol being involved is no excuse. Vehicles operated in a careless manor and complete disregaurd for traffic laws is just as bad as a DWI with fatality. A minor fender bender at 25 MPH is one thing but tailgating in bumper to bumper highway traffic is braindead. Why do so many people drive that way? There are hundreds of vehicles in front of one and other going the same speed your not going anywhere any faster than the guy in front of you. Yet people tailgate at a dangerously close distance like they are gonna magically clear a path in front of them so they can drive 90 MPH because they to lazy to get up 20 minutes sooner to go to work. I think this world is a twisted place, the actions of the carelss cannot be swept under the rug. The woman driving the vehicle that caused all of this mess is 55 years of age. She is not a 17 year old high scholler lacking driving experience. She has been in the world long enough and had enough years of driving under her belt to no better than to be tailgating those innocent people.

you are right, but tailgating as well as going over the speed limit are both careless; yet look at all the folks that do it. I'm sure youve never broken a traffic law in your life. but for those of us who have, we should definately receive a punishment.
I believe this woman should too, but I also think the act was an accident and she should not be punished to the FULL EXTENT of the LAW.
It is a horrible thing that happened and I pray for BOTH families because this will touch them all.If youve never in your life broken a traffic law then good for you, but if you should ever have a lead foot and accidentally hurt another person (keyword Accidentally) I think you should be punished for not following rules but I don't think you should be hanged.

I THINK PEOPLE SHOULD BE PROSECUTED WHEN THEY HURT SOMEONE IN AN ACCIDENT DUE TO NEGLIGENCE ON THEIR PART. IF SHE HAD NOT BEEN TAILGATING THE DEATHS WOULD NEVER HAVE OCCURED AND BECAUSE OF HER NEGLIGENCE 3 PEOPLE ARE DEAD. IT WAS NOT AN ACCIDENT BECAUSE SHE KNEW BY FOLLOWING THEM TO CLOSE THAT AN ACCIDENT COULD OCCUR. MAYBE BY PROSECUTING HER A MESSAGE WILL BE SENT OUT TO ALL DRIVERS TO BE MORE CONSIDERATE WHEN THEY DRIVE BECAUSE IF YOU CAUSE A DEATH YOU WILL BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE. MY 2 DAUGHTERS AND I WERE INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT ON APRIL 14 OF THIS YEAR AND THE WOMAN INTENTIONALLY HIT US GOING 102 MPH AND LUCKILY NONE OF US DIED AND WE ALL WALKED AWAY. AND SHE WAS ALLOWED TO LEAVE THE SCENE OF THE ACCIDENT BECAUSE SHE IS MENTALLY ILL AND HER SISTER BROUGHT HER TO THE HOSPITAL TO BE COMMITED. SO THERE I WAS LEFT STANDING ON THE SIDE OF A ROAD THANKFUL TO BE ALIVE BUT DUMBFOUNDED BY THE CHAIN OF EVENTS. THE WOMAN HAD NO INSURANCE AND NO LISCENCE AND WAS NEVER HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR TRYING TO KILL ME AND MY CHILDREN BECAUSE SHE WANTED TO DIE AND WAS CRAZY. WHERE IS THE JUSTICE IN THAT. I WAS LEFT FEELING BEWILDERED AND CONFUSED AND SHE JUST WALKED AWAY. WE NEED TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT WE DO AND UNTIL WE ARE ALL HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR OUR ACTIONS WE ALL BETTER PRAY FOR OUR SAFETY IN THIS WORLD

Funeral and hospital expenses are high now even with insurance. Has the family set-up a method for accepting donations?

Phillip was in the National Guard and I know his head stone will be taken care of, but that's all I know. I know the funeral will be on Sunday. Our town is taking up donations for the funeral and for baby Katie...Who is still in I.C.U.

Please pray for this family ( Katie and her little sister who is only 11 months old ). For they are the ones who have suffered a great loss. They have lost # main people in their life.. Thank God that both of their Grandparents from each side live in a 30 mile radius from one another.
Please pray for this Family.

Negligence is too light. She should be charged with Murder. People need to be held responsible for their actions. You killed three people due to your behavior. You should pay. Send a message that aggressive driving will not be tolerated!

While I appreciate the sentiment, I don't understand your wording "accident" when your sister was tailgaiting. Shyla and Phillip were very cautious people with precious cargo (THEIR CHILDREN) in their car. Your sister made a deadly decision to tailgate, which was a DECISION, not an accident. As a result, two children will be raised without either parent.

Thank you for your concern. All three will be buried in the National Cemetary and headstones taken care of via the military. Two additional plots will be left vacant, in case, God forbid, Kaytie or Avery (18 months old) were to pass before the age of 18. Keep praying. The next two days are going to be very hard for the family, friends, and students.

Seriously?

All that life GONE, two children parentless and a week or two in jail?

I completely disagree.
