VAN WERT - Currently the Van Wert City Schools budget is in good shape, but there is danger ahead.
Board of Education members on Wednesday approved the certificate of resources and the permanent appropriations for 2013 and temporary appropriations for 2014. Total resources of $44,098,175 for the current year are more than enough to cover the total appropriations of $37,336,062. The problems are looming in the five-year forecast which the board also approved.
The cash balance for June 30, 2017 is projected at more than $4.3 million. District Treasurer Mike Ruen explained that the deficit is due to the removal by the state of the personal property tax reimbursement after this year. The reimbursement has been counted upon by districts for many years.
Some of the deficit could be lessened depending upon which state budget plan will be approved in Columbus. Superintendent Ken Amstutz told the board that each of the three proposed plans should bring a little good news for the district.
"From our standpoint in any of the three (budget plans) it looks as though Van Wert City Schools should come out better than what we typically," he said. "We'll wait and see. That should be forthcoming in the next ten days."
On another subject, Amstutz related that the district is in discussions to possible donate the land at the site of the former Franklin Elementary School to the City of Van Wert for use as a park.
"We want to have things in place so that if we're going to basically donate that property, we're going to make sure... that it does meet the needs of the community," Amstutz revealed. "Certainly some of the needs that we do have are play spaces and areas for the kids, and that would certainly go to benefit that as well."
Amstutz added that the property at the former Washington Elementary could be considered for such a use as well.
why wernt thes schools sold for money like the anthony wayne school was, and how much is it costing to teat them down and haul them away, they just tore them down playground equipment and all... what a waste

They are going to want another tax levy. Now you understand why they want to make this last temporary tax permanent.

When they run out of money they can't go back to the old schools because they tore those buildings worth millions of dollars down.

Van Wertians are stupid for the most part.

Maybe it's time to start questioning the real value of public education, and whether it benefits the perspective student, or the state.

This shouldn't come as a shock to anyone. Well maybe to those that were suckered in to vote for the permanent levy. The school will continue to blackmail Van Wert while holding your babies for ransom.

Get ready for November, when our city council will have two issues on the ballot. All to benefit whom? A pool tax for a pool that can not sustain itself. And an issue to make their terms four years from two and staggered. Here's a note, Stan Agler would be 86 before he would have to seek re-election. How are the citizens going to benefit?

And mayor Agler only wanted to get re-elected because he needed 2 more years as a government employee to retire with FULL benefits! Why would he care about anything else! Maybe he will be like Cathy Hoffman and retire to Florida after he screws over Van Wert too!
People in this town need to open their eyes! Our politicians are only looking out for themselves!

And how many Van Wert Graduates have gone to Harvard over the years?? More money, more problems! Our education system would be ten times better if they just restored the old buildings. Don't tell us, it's cheaper to rebuild. Cause it's not!

Rehire

Love how they say they don't support retire rehire, and use that as an argument to try to get people to vote for the levy. It's a "savings" to hire younger and cheaper teachers....yet low and behold- levy passes- and now three people want to rehire. Nice. Lets give some of these poor people who are dying for a teaching job a chance!

Some of the people who helped to put man into space and a man on the moon were educated in a one room school house. Today in Van Wert we have 60 Million Dollars for schools and what do we get back in return?

People who can't use the English language, but instead have a form of pig English the use in texting. We have young people who won't work, but just sit back and say give me, give me and then fry their brains on dope.

Van Wertians are stupid! They just keep on throwing money at the school system believing that makes for a good education. The teachers run around looking like a bunch of rag bags; they are teacher the kids something all right, but I don't think it is what they should be teaching. They are certainly not good role models for kids to emulate.

Teachers can't understand why they are not respected. They don't look like professional teachers, they don't dress like professional teachers so they don't act like professional teachers, so why the hell would anybody respect them?

Remember, there will be two School Board seats up for election this November. All it takes to get your name on the ballot is 25 signatures of registered voters. Anybody interested?

The concept of joining a broken system to fix it has one flaw. 2 people wont make a difference. One student at a time, private/home schooling will, especially if educational resources are properly vetted for authenticity and accuracy.

Two people would make a difference if they have the courage of their convictions. Too often we base who we vote for on "SOCIAL STANDING" rather than our values.

2 people can't break the education system free of federal government involvement, which actually more than doubles the cost of education. 1 person can, however, one parent at a time, one child at a time, rejecting the system for what it is, a method of indoctrinating children to become either obedient workers, or slaves to the state.

Actually, Kenton is only the last place I lived in, for barely a year. As for ideas, I welcome them, especially if it's an idea that a person can implement to make themselves a better person.

There is a difference between education an indoctrination.

As far as 'government' goes, let's start with the 2 root words, essentially meaning "Mind Control". You may well be fooled by the purpose of government, but I'm not.

I don't recall once saying anything bad about PicNsave and as for the Mayor, have no reason to dislike him. You may be confusing addressing the mendacity of politics with individuals.

Much of my work can be found in my photo album at http://www.oretek.com/images/

You're not NSA, CIA or any other 3 letter criminal organization pretending to be government, so you don't get to know the rest.
