For about the last month or so there has been a pile of turkey manure at the corner of John Brown and Mconohay rd. Yesterday there were 2 semis there dumping huge loads of turkey crap beside the first pile. I think it comes from a farm in Mercer County. Turkey, cow and hog manure has ruined their lake..........so they are paying to dump it away from there! This is not good for Van Wert.

Is this going to be tilled into the ground as fertilizer? It might be cheaper to the farmer to buy animal waste than to purchase chemical fertilizer.

It is VW. The whole world sends their sh!tballs here to slowly decompose.
Who cares about regulations and lakes? They're probably making a profit, and that's the only thing that really matters...

I agree with Kirby. It's probably going to be used as fertilizer.

Great deduction Kirby. It piles up. Bugs, germs, stink and anyting else that is in waste comes with it. The waste lays there for months, then they spread it around. The runoff from this stuff is toxic.
Wake up! This is not a good thing. This is why people did not want "superfarms" in this area 20 years ago.

might be coopers, not the processing plant but the farms that raise the turkeys for them in Mercer and other northwest ohio counties. the processing plant was looked at for dumping into the creek awhile back.

Turkey crap is not what contaminated the lake and your lack if knowledge represents the reason why your town imports crap. Having been a resident if van wert from birth to 26 I can say I'm glad to be gone. The towns a dump and the being in if crap for their proves the point. Enjoy your new sh:t!

It's my understanding what contaminated the lake was algea which was fed by nutrients coming from farm field run-off. Am is mistaken?

Nope, am is not mistaken. Wanna take a guess what else was in the fields, though? Here's a hint, it was poo...
But hey, as long as someone makes a buck, who cares, right. lol

Runoff from farmland is one of the greatest problems. Nutrients of livestock waste and natural and chemical fertilizers are laden with phosphorus and nitrogen. These elements upset the natural balance of the lake and increase the growth of blue-green algae.[8] The algae is a bacterium. The bacteria produce toxic peptides that can be harmful to plants and animals.[8] Humans are also affected by the toxins. Microcystin can harm the liver and cause other health problems including mild rashes and sneezing and even severe gastrointestinal ailments.[8]]

This is from wikipedia about the grand lake in celina, so yea it's nutrients - nutrients from LIVESTOCK WASTE

Here is a case that brain drain did not occur. Have a nice life wherever you are now.
Grand Lake suffers from a number of problems.
The first problem is the lack of depth and goes back to the original construction when two earthen dams were built. One on the east side by St. Mary's and one on the west side by Celina. This allow a natural occurring low area to flood to and average 6'.
Water quality has always been an issue but has become worse with more phosphorus (fertilizer) being spread in the water sheds fields. With the advent of larger farms the ability to dispose of manure has become an increasing problem for the lake. This is a particular problem when the manure is spread on frozen ground where it easily runs off in the the lakes tributaries and eventually into the lake.
So the problem now is the algae, that is fed by the phosphorus the lays on the bottom of the lake, that is stirred up by the winds and the lake being shallow.
So yes, turkey crap is part of the lakes problem.
Good day

celina "lake" was built to provide water for the canal system. it is not a natural lake with spring, creek or any other fresh source of water, ripped is spot on with their comments. It's a whole they dug not a lake.

I said what I said because I make greed-based, opinionated decisions based solely on my own needs, instead of making informed choices for the greater good of humanity. If you was funny, you would of said cents of hummor, right? But you're not, so you didn't. Ho hum...

Artificial chemical pesticide was in the run off. Not chicken shit. My associate is head of the DNR of Ohio. I have seen the tests and results. That being said, I would not be surprised if Coopers was bringing their crap to VanWert. Maybe you could take your high unemployment rate and reduce it by giving some folks a few jobs and shovel it elsewhere. It's sad really I do remember when VanWert was nice. It's a long way from that!

A few more oberservations. There is a pretty big pond at the end of Mcconohay Rd. Will the run off affect it? Van Wert is not a bad place because crap was hauled in here. It is bad if we don't mention it and stick up for our community. If you moved away, why do you still read about VW and bash it?

Didn't say it was bad because crap is brought there I said its fitting as that town has gone downhill. The reason I follow this is because if certain mentions of a person I'm tracking for legal matters. If you know how prosperous that town was 30 yrs ago and see it now, it's like night and day. Not for the better!

Well, sadly, I have to agree with you that VW has gone downhill in the last years.
Part of that is due to the State of Ohio and its business-unfriendly laws. Ergo, not as many jobs.
But much of it has to do with the horrible drug culture in VW now.
30 years ago, no one did heroin but now it's a real problem here.
There are a lot of jobs available in NE Indiana, but they require drug testing, and it's my understanding that most applicants fail the drug test.
I don't know how to fix VW, but I'd sure like it to go back to where it was 30 years ago.

Maybe you associate should read the material the DNR provides to the public. What is your associates name?
