a forum, or a thread? usually whoever starts a thread is the first poster, but not necessarily...as for their real identities? probably just some a-hole who hates you.

no, i don't think so. i imagine there could be ways...but, if someone trashed you on this site, it's probably someone you know who just has a corncob up their butt and decided to do the weasely thing and start a rumor here. so, you'll have to do a little sherlock holmes investigating yourself...like did they say things only someone close to you would know, like a friend? a coworker maybe? best thing is if they do, is just ignore it, and whatever you do, don't respond and try to defend yourself...it will only make it worse.

Ok I'm not worried but was curious. There is a thread call civil air patrol and someone's feelings are hurt and they want to file charges.

You can click the report abuse link and request that the entire thread be deleted. If you state that the thread is bullying, includes personal attacks, uses the names of minors, or states false information about people using first and last names, the thread will probably be deleted.

lol, sounds like what they need is a tissue and not a lawyer! i'll have to check it out...but there have been a few cases of people suing for slander (not locally) but usually you'd have to prove that someone was defaming you like if someone kept posting so and so was a rapist or that a business did something horrible (like a dentist named (insert name) feels up his patient's when they are under) that they could prove wasn't true...but it would be a lengthy process and i doubt unless someone was saying something completely outrageous that hurt that person's image or business it would be useless...

Hypothetically, what would the charges actually be? Defamation is a civil issue, not criminal. It would probably be easier and considerably less expensive to grow thicker skin.

eh, don't fall for it joe...some teen trashed this 'amanda puckett' person on another thread, and got scared he was going to be found out, so he started this thread under her name asking if there was a way someone could find out who he was. silly.

The identity question has been raised before. Here is the answer. Every post is tied to an IP (Internet protocol) address, whether static (permanent) or dynamic (changes occasionally). Posts are routed through the Internet to the server used by Topix where your comment is posted on the site and a log records time and date of the post as well as the IP sources along the way. This is basically the same for any and all Internet traffic. Who can access the log? Only the server administrators. How can you obtain a trace of the IP address back to its poster? Usually only through law enforcement or court order. No one's identity is secret - it's just protected.

well this I know for a fact: I was talking to someone on topix from the city of annawan ill. kinda arguing a bit over this very issue...I said there is no way he could get my identity, and he said he could, but it would take about 10 minutes...well ten minutes later he comes back with my address... he couldn't tell me my actual name, but said I definetly live at the intersection of (blank & blank) I was AMAZED!absolutely true story...
all I know is he worked for the cable company , so he may be privy to equipment others don't have access to...but he definetly found my address...

It takes a good deal of effort to try to control what is just as easy to ignore. The only thing really being attacked on the relevant threads is ego, an overrated and intangible thing.

With public wifi the process of identifying individual users becomes very difficult. Mac addresses (an individual devices address) would come into play. The local wifi router logs the mac address but does not forward it. An investigator would check the logs of the wifi router once it was id'd. Even still, unless they suspected you personally, they would not know your MAC address without getting your device to see what it was. Enter the search warrant and the confiscation of your equipment for examination.
