My condolences to the citizens of Carter County on the loss of their Sheriff, Greg Melton. What a tragic end to his career. May the wheels of justice turn swiftly.

from what i was told. Sheriff Melton was found shot in his garage by his wife and child. He was alive when a deputy and a state trooper arrived but has passed away. A neighbor heard the shot and called the police. the news probably won't say what all actually happened on the news tomorrow.

Greg Melton loved his family, friends, community and the work he was dedicated to. I do pray that this incident is investigated throughly. We are losing too many folks in the immediate area to suicides and violent crime. Doesn't make sense in such rural area. Something has to be done.

No one will ever make any of the people who knew and loved Greg that this was a suicide. I hope the MSHP investigates this as well as they did when Sgt. Graham was killed. And not the way Jimmy was investigated.

I'm a long time resident of Carter County and am very concerned about this recent tragedy. I didn't know Greg Melton personally but my heart goes out to his family and friends.
My question is; does any one but myself find it strange that some one would shoot themself in the face to commit suicide, also as far as I know most suicides are commited at night between the hours of 1:oo and 4:00 am in the morning. My other problem with this, is that, every thing I've ever heard about Greg Melton was that he loved his family very much. It just doesn't add up. I'm not a consperist, but this just doesnt add up.

Your right. It doesn't add up. Greg loved his family very much, and would not have put them through this. Especially knowing that his wife and son would probably be the one to find him.

Alot of the time people will put the end of the gun in their mouth... that is what a young man done recently here. Not saying that is what happened with Mr Melton,,, I would say with his job came alot of stress, and where there is stress is anxiety and depression

I do not recall the Jimmie you mentioned. I understand there is a major crime task force that can be utilized. I wonder if that will be done? I also wonder why it is not done any time a violent death occurs.

Also, Greg Melton was a trained professional, empowered with stress management skills. He also had a positive support network of family, friends and staff. A good man...a sad, tragic ending.

Yes I do agree that with the job comes much anxiety and depression but, why would he run for another term if he were depressed or had anxiety issues? Again there are many questions that need to be answered and hopefully for our town and especially his family they will all be answered quickly.

Like everyone else I am just speculating, they say he was found in his work shop... unfortunatly it could have been a very tragic accident???
