in 1984 there were 13 river access points in the park. today there are over 130 vehicular river access points-roughly 1 per mile along the riverways. there are only 4 hores trails designated by the park but more than 250 miles of de facto trails exist.
the jacks fork and current river are said to attract more than 1 million visitors a year and catering to those visitors is a big part of the economy. long term economic vibrancy depends on a stable and sustainable well managed resource of enduring beauty and appeal.
the park service has utterly failed in it's duty to protect the river and water quality from such abuse as uncontrolled atv destruction of riverbanks and river, thousands of horses crapping in the rivers to the point that swimming in some parts of jacks fork is banned. the proliferation of dirt and blacktop paved roads also damages water quality. a book could be written detailing the manner in which the park service has allowed the development of what was supposed to be a wild refuge from the kind of money making commercial yogi bear crap that caters to st. louis city slickers who can barely walk w/o a cement sidewalk.
Lies ,only 13 access points? There was 32 from pin oak to big spring! and you tree hungers claim 1,300,000 people visit the park each year. I'll offer 500 dollars to see absolute proof of that

I predict the OSRW will go the same way the coast of northern California and Oregon has gone the last 40 years, from pristine for everybody to private property with keep out signs everywhere. And polluted enuf that everbody will have to drink beer or pop, and don't get in the water. Every fifty miles there will be a little turn off the road with a quarter of an acre park for the public to view the beauty.

I'd hate to be a government regulator trying to balance all the diverse interests who want the area for their own personal interests and poopoo all the others. I would probably just put the whole damn thing on the auction block and sell to the highest bidder who would be the Chinese and they could do with it what they choose.
When it does go back to private locals it will be just like it was at the turn of the century, bare and uninhabitable.

You do realise that Obama is for a so-called New World Order right? I am very conservative and do NOT want a one world government, whether it is pushed by Bush, Obama or anyone else. BTW there are alot more animals that crap in or near Current river or any other for that matter. I for one am sick of liberals trying to tell the rest of us how we should live.

when we get the new world order there will be peace and prosperity for all and the liberals will be chained and cast out for 10,000years then the chains will have to be loosened and a great battle take place. we will follow Odin and his two hounds on the side of good against all the liberal forces of evil. we will lose of course but what an honor to fight and die for Odin and the 10,000 years of feasting and wild women wont be that bad either.

Spoken like a true republican evangelic conservative "man of god".
Thanks so much for telling us "what Obama is for". Seems it was George Bush senior was the first to coin the phrase "new world order" but even a liberal (believer in a little more equality and less greed and selfishness) like me don't get excited when I hear the phrase as I define it as the world seeming smaller now with so much more interaction and less isolationism as a political meaning. For you conspiracy theorists: The new world order is for gods chosen children (the jews) to own everything. The catholics (being better educated) will manage everything and the protestants (being dumber and less skilled at anything) will do the physical labor. Makes for a new world order. Try it you will like it.
Another example of meaning of words: Same word, different meaning to different groups of people. Think of the tower of babel.

you must have been to the central coast. it does have alot of keep out signs and fences but it's not that polluted by big sur. it's a different atmosphere. there are plenty of ocean fish but few fresh water. it's exquisitely beautiful but more fragile. ultra expensive mixed with hippies. you can't stuff your freezer with deer, fresh water fish and blackberries or harvest bushels of walnuts and hickory nuts.

I know where you mean. A little over half a century ago and a couple miles north of what's now called big sur resort area was a place called Fort Ord's hunterlegget wilderness area where I had the joyous experience of taking part in a mock exercise of waiting for an attack from a battalion of russians who landed and came ashore.(Whole country was paranoid about the russians in those days) That was the good old days of the M1 rifle and all the sophisticated stuff you boys wouldn't know how to operate today. About the only thing around in those days was a few local sea lions in monterey bay and a few tomato pickers in Salinas. I recon it may have changed some by now.

yes there are many new sub divisions as you mighta guessed. the coastal area from fort ord down to san louis obispo is really beautiful. ifa person were to visit ca. and only go to l.a. or even s. f. they would have no clue as to the beauty of monterey area and carmel beaches. beach carmel has the most beautiful white sand beach and clean water and the different types of colorful sea weeds and shells that wash up nearby are so incredible it's hard to believe.
but if you want to hunt, fish, gig, float trips etc., gather wild foods and almost live off the land you can't beat southern missouri.

Somebody needs to do something about it for sure. Mobs of floaters drinking, cursing and playing loud music. No place for a family day anymore. I counted six different groups littering. Cigarette butts and beer cans floating. So sad. I picked up a forty gallon bag in just a few hours.

It's Ozark National Scenic Riverways, Riverways is one word, y'all: which informs me that you don't live there or you don't pay attention. Also I'm less worried about horse crap than I am about the following: drunk idiots that can't or won't get out of their tubes to take a dump or pee, the fish, the raccoons, and pretty much ANY WIlDLIFE. I will agree the horse trails are over populated and I have issues with some weekend cowboys that don't understand respect but 80% of those people try not to damage the rivers.
