There is hardly anyone on the river ten months out of the year. Two months of people but only six busy weekends. And not that many if it rains. I'll be damned if we need a damn bunch of tree huggers from city telling us what we need! Stay up there in the city! We don't need your opinion on anything! Give me a damn break!!!!! A big flood like we just had does more than any people can. Just another bunch of rich liberal assholes telling us we can't take care of ourselves. PLEASE BIG GOVERNMENT PLEASE SAVE US. Can't even run the Post Office how the hell will they help save the river. Bunch of lazy ass pencil pushers saying they have jobs but as far as I am concerned are on welfare.

I believe that the only endangered things about current river are the people who don't know how to tube or canoe and wind up in root wads because they were too dumb to paddle, drunk idiots who don't pay attention around them, and tourists who try to take it away from us locals. If you didn't like your visit here last time then please don't go back home and talk bad about us just go somewhere else next time we don't try to shut down your McDonalds although they cause your spoiled children to be so obese they can't enjoy the river. That is truly more endangering than the river ever was is the parents who feed thier kids junk because they don't want to hear them complain, or the ones left at home too young by themselves so mommy can go whore around or daddy can go get drunk. Why don't you people worry about a REAL problem like homeless in America or something and leave us and our river alone?

Go set beside the river on a Saturday from the last weekend in May until the first weekend in September and you will see why the river is endangered. It is completely packed with tubers and rafters. And I do mean packed. You can literally walk all the way across the river in any given area by walking across the tubes and rafts. Then throw in the out of town boats. It is crazy!!
One simple solution. You have to be a resident of Carter County to access the river.

ONSRW is my home. up yours whoever trashed me. flooding only hurts the river where the land was clearcut. it's been flooding there for thousands of years before we came along and took it[ a pristine paradise] away from the injuns.

I can run my boat the whole month of June through the few floaters. July is hectic but after the second weekend in August it dies off. School starts. A resident? Yeah that would work. Duh. The Park Service was accused of not doing a good job. They need to grow some balls and tell those liberal city folks to mind their own business. When the hell did we need a bunch of rich liberal assholes telling us what we need? That group is from the city. Hell they can't take care of where they live so who needs them here? Let the government take one right away from us and then another then it will be another. What folks don't realize they want everybody off the river eventually. If they have their way in the future you won't even be able to dip your toe in it.

you're partly right. the gov. would like to either close the river or i. e. put surveillance cameras every 100 ft. lining both sides of the river that auto. photo boat number/identity of occupants and auto. issue a citation which is auto. mailed to the occupant's residence.
here is what i'm saying: a segment of the park service is intentionally allowing and ignoring the incremental destruction of ONSRW in order to have an excuse to disallow access and/or take away more of our right to be left alone.
you're wrong to waste energy trying to implement a "locals only" solution to the cityslicker's abuse of the park. it ain't gonna happen!

.... you're right too many city slickers trash the river and one solution to that problem is to ban future development by the park service that facilitates more cars, motorhomes and boats etc. or requires clearing of forest land or land not already developed. here's why: if you "develop" 3 acres of land for motor homes and build a road to it guess what you're gonna get. well, you're gonna get 3 acres of st. louis city slicker's motor homes running their frigging generators next to one of the last clean rivers thats still got fish that are fit to eat and are not on the endangered species list.
the fed gov. and segments of the park service know this and that's why they love their dev. projects.

more development=less wild nature=more access to people scared of wild nature=more abuse of wild nature=more gov. restrictions to limit access to the river and our freedom to fish, float and everything else w/o the new world law and order watching over our shoulders and controlling every aspect of our lives.

in 1984 there were 13 river access points in the park. today there are over 130 vehicular river access points-roughly 1 per mile along the riverways. there are only 4 hores trails designated by the park but more than 250 miles of de facto trails exist.
the jacks fork and current river are said to attract more than 1 million visitors a year and catering to those visitors is a big part of the economy. long term economic vibrancy depends on a stable and sustainable well managed resource of enduring beauty and appeal.
the park service has utterly failed in it's duty to protect the river and water quality from such abuse as uncontrolled atv destruction of riverbanks and river, thousands of horses crapping in the rivers to the point that swimming in some parts of jacks fork is banned. the proliferation of dirt and blacktop paved roads also damages water quality. a book could be written detailing the manner in which the park service has allowed the development of what was supposed to be a wild refuge from the kind of money making commercial yogi bear crap that caters to st. louis city slickers who can barely walk w/o a cement sidewalk.

Can 5,000 horses shit in Jacks Fork River on any given weekend and not affect the Current River? Wait until they start running horseback rides to see the Elk and you will have the horses shitting in the river all fall and winter.

Howler for a city dweller you sure are quick to condemn them. Maybe you should that it is indeed a public resourse and that some folks like to enjoy it from the back of a horse. I know that when you and your hemp clad friends are sitting around the campfire at midco it seems to you that you should rule the world. to the rest of us yer just a bunch of dirty hippies.
