It SUCKS!!!! It's called the "haven or the hood". Take a drive thru will see. Some pple take real good care of thier yards and others look like the salvage yard. Kids walk the streets in the summer all night long. Alot of weed avaialble. Controlled by county police, Volunteer fire dept. Water sucks!

We moved here from the South side of Chicago in Dec of 1998. Like all places it has it's problems but we have experienced none. I do have 2 300 watt flood lights in the front and back of my house for a deterrent but I did that in Chicago too! You have to be proactive and watch for your neighbors as well as yourself. We fell safe. We finally have sidewalks and the kids walk on them now instead of the street. Sewer bill is $76 & change every month which our Realtor didn't tell us. Bad surprise for us there after we purchased. Home Owners Association bill is $300 a year or $270 if you pay it all at once. Used them once in 14 years and they took care of the minor problem of a house not cutting their grass in the summer! Drive through in the a.m and p.m to check the house and foot traffic. Good schools and many places to eat right down Rt. 6 as well as Porter Hospital right down the road now instead of downtown Valpo!

I've lived in South Haven for years now. The kids are a little obnoxious, and there are thefts (mostly vehicular). The drug users tend to keep to themselves. Other than that there isn't really any violent crime, and there are a ton of kids, because of the two elementary schools. All-in-all it's a better than average place to live. If you are looking for something with shopping, you might want to look elsewhere, as South Haven has very little commerce.

I have lived in Gary, East Chicago, and Hammond, and South Haven, is NOT the hood! There are no gangbangers out here, or people selling drugs and I am sure there are, but they have not been blazen about it. I love hanging outside a lot. I have not had one person come up to me and I have been out here 3 years. I have seen teens, children, and pets around the neighborhood and the people are very sweet. I moved here to get away from the hood and if I thought I was in danger, I would be the first person out of the HAVE! We love it here and there are no issues, at least on my block. You can't judge a whole neighborhood by what ONE person does, or even ONE family! The houses are well kept and the lawns get mowed. Otherwise I would be leaving.

Oh, and another good thing is even though we have had the roughest winter in years, they have always kept the streets plowed. I was always able to get out and get on Route 6. That is a plus.

I have lived in South Haven for 20 years and have had very few problems. The taxes are low and the majority of people are nice. I recommend this town!!(Garbage is a bit expensive, but not a deal breaker for sure)

I've lived here since 2010. The police only respond when you mention drugs the county doesn't want to plow nor salt the side road which are caving in. I got rid of the hoodlums by calling the police when they all had a big under age drinking party nailed that now things are a little better.

I live in south haven and do not like it. My neighbor to the south cut the grass twice in three years. Neighbor to the east across the doesn't cut his either. The neighbor behind me has a pool full of frogs, that said he has not swam in since 2005. I called the HOA to complain they said their is no rules on the books about tall grass. This is bull it is not 1970 with ten hillbilly houses anymore.
