Terry Mattingly: Baptist churches reporting fewer baptisms

Jun 14, 2013 Full story: ReporterNews.com 71

Visitors who enter Southern Baptist churches these days will usually see posters and pamphlets for everything from marriage-enrichment retreats to tornado-relief fundraisers, from weight-loss classes to drives to find volunteers for African hospitals.

I grew up in a Baptist Church. They don't seem to understand that their inflexible dogmatism, their meddling in secular law, even the Boy Scouts now are driving younger and better educated people away in droves.

If they can't bend, they'll have to learn to break.

Christianity is not a social club you join.

Never said it was. It's a way of life and certainly not one I'd choose.

That is a bad move for you, but that is your choice. You will understand what I am talking about on Judgement Day.

No one has enough sense to choose per scripture.

God chooses you! And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven? 43 Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, Murmur not among yourselves. 44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day. 45 It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.
John 6:42-45 (KJV)

Thank you! It is indeed my choice and when we're both dead, we're simply dead. That's why this life is so precious.

You're already dead. Life is in Jesus. Without that you cannon know the joy that only exist in Christianity. The Christian can even count departing this world as joy. The inner peace given by the Holy Ghost can only be experienced; not learned.

I see you have posted 9431 comments in a Baptist forum - strange. You are seeking and in denial.

Typical arrogance. What, in your mind, makes you more aware than others?

As for "seeking," what other religions did you study before you decided on Christianity? Or did you just cop out and go straight for the convenient, culturally dominant one?

I'm not seeking a damn thing. The vast majority of modern Christianity is blatant idolatry, graven images and all.

Dare say bob you've never meet a Christian. Catholicism is not Christian; never has been since day one (origin 313 AD; formal inception 321 AD).

Christians have been slaughtered for near 2,000 years --- you not the first to try.

I've been studying since 1972 and textual criticism and manuscript evidence near 40 years.

If you weren't seeking something bob, you wouldn't be here on a Baptist forum.

Believe me, sugar, I haven't made all of these posts in Baptist Forums. I visit many threads and my "seeking and in denial" exists in your mind only.

Do not presume that your joys in life are greater than mine, you do not know me and your arrogance is hardly the "humble" xtian persona you wish to project.

I am very much alive, one day I will not be. Neither will you. At least I can face the prospect head on.

Nobody said anything about Catholicism. I'm not sure what that tangent is about.

Nobody's being "slaughtered." That's one hell of a persecution complex.

You've been studying your own religion for over (near? you're as good at math as you are philosophy) 40 years? So what? Confirmation bias is a bitch, huh? Guess what? Other people's point of view is as valid as yours. That's tough to get your big head around, isn't it?

The Louisville forum on topix isn't "baptist." You nuts don't own everything.

A much wiser man than you once said "keep the company of those who seek the truth, and run from those who think they've found it."

A conclusion just means you're intellectually lazy or incapable.

OK bob, I'm a consulting engineer and been around the world, lived in middle east. The top banner on this site says Southern Baptist or at least it does on my computer. My writing textbooks (accepted in colleges) and computer programs (sell commercially) is my occupation.

Your reference to idolatry leads to Catholicism; not Christianity.

You are not well versed on the subject nor can you be without Christ Jesus in your life. Things go right over your head; sorry I assumed you knew more than you do.

Amos 5:26 - do yourself well and find what the star of your god means...... It explains most of what is taking place today in prophecy. Good bye bob.

albtraum; I'm not your sugar, believe me!

You are without a clue: may you seek God and become saved - then, you will know and only then. Good bye.

A fish doesn't know it's wet, and a zealot doesn't know he's been brainwashed.

You're not a prophet. You need to get over yourself. You childishly think you have the only valid opinion. Thankfully, the 1st Amendment protects our rights from you nuts.

I understand how people who don't know God have their own perception of reality. It is amazing how perceptions change overnight in many cases. Those whose perceptions change in accord with the realities of God are the fortunate ones. Those whose perceptions remain with this world are the unfortunate people.

You folks are hilarious. Enjoy your cult, and have at it with your smug, condescending, egotistical proselytizing.

I'll stick with reality, myself. It's ironic that you believe your perception of reality is superior, considering it involves talking snakes and donkeys, at least 2 zombies, and a virgin giving birth. Not to mention a loving god who will torture you wth fire for eternity if you dare to die while questioning this childish nonsense.

But hey, whatever works for you, Guru Don.

Not at all, long as it doesn't get legislated and forced on us unenlightened infidels. Why would I?

bob, you are guilty of murder. Jesus out of compassion and love made atonement and now you blaspheme the Holy Ghost. Your life is worthless.
