I think that any parent that gets a gun for a child younger than 16 should be charged with child abuse and criminal neglect of the child. This is the most ridiculous, stupid, PREVENTABLE tragedy that I have ever heard of. No child should be allowed access to a gun.

well I am a parent of a small child and yes he has a REAL gun! 99% of the people that live in the south has a LOADED gun in their homes. yes i do agree, guns should not be left out with small children around, but noone knows that it was left out. a 5 year old child does tend to get into things that they know they aren't supposed to, he may have thought it was a toy! no one except the parents know what really happened! it is noones place to pass judgement on those 2 wonderful parents (yes i can honestly say that because i know them!), everyone should just empathize with them and leave it be. im sure they feel bad enough as it is!
they told on the news it was a real gun that was given to him as a present. They also told that it sit in the corner. They said they didn't know it had a shell in it.Thats all i got to say. Can't think of no words to describe anymore of this tragic seneless act. I mean why? It could have been preventable. Hes 5 and they said he received this rifle last year so he was 4. Thats real smart

All I can think is when all this is over,The burden and guilt this child will suffer.I ask you lord to comfort him in the days, weeks, months and years to come.Caroline was perfect and she's ok.I truly hurt for the child left behind. And I'm sure the parents feel enough guilt without people bashing then on here.True people have a right to their opinion, but some things are better left unsaid!!

Who are the parents? Just wondering if I knew them, and no, I am not meaning anything bad about this. I pray that God gives this family peace, and watches over all them. Please God place your hand upon the hearts of all who are hurting. Amen.

This kind of event is hard to stomach. I am an owner of several firearms. I keep them unloaded and secured at all times. I keep the ammunition secured in another area. I teach firearm safety to my 11 y/o daughter, who loves to go to the range with her dad. Having loaded firearms where children of this age group can apparently easily reach is unacceptable. While I grieve this loss of this young life, I hope the owner of this firearm is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

I am saddened by this situation. I read elsewhere that the gun was just leaned up to a wall without anyone realizing that there was a shell in the chamber. I don't know that that is true. Apparently, it was a child's training 22 rifle that was given to the 4 year old. This family is going to have horrible guilt and sadness for the remainder of their lives. I can not begin to imagine what is going through their minds. I hope that fewer families feel the need for a firearm. My experience is with my cousin that became schizophrenic at age 23. I don't like firearms and I don't know how you can limit their access to only responsible individuals.

this was a very preventable "accident". Do you drive off in your car with your baby not strapped in a carseat? No, because #1 it's illegal, and #2 hopefully you have enough common sense to know that something bad could happen. Prayers will not undo what happened. Maybe education and a few common sense gun laws might prevent further horrors. Common people, guns marketed for kids? Use your heads.

I would define "left out" as "being in a place and condition whereby a 5 year old child can access and use it", so I disagree, we do know that it was "left out".

I have really been saddened by the event that took place yesterday. I am hurt because I know the family and I have seen the children in town where I work. I feel for the family because everyone is blaming the parents and saying how could they do this? Well you know , they did not do this. We live in a area where children as young a 4 do have real guns. They hunt , fish , ride motorcycles and do other dangerous things that could kill them. The parents of this child are very good people and so are the other family members. I am sure if we all looked in our homes there are things that could kill a child just as easy. Are all your cleaning supplies out of reach? Are your steak knives locked up? Are all electrical outlets covered? Is your smoke detector batteries replaced? Do you talk on your cell phone or text while your kids are in the car with you , or even when they are not?
My point is this was a accident period. This is our God's will. Why? we don't know...but don't blame and put more hurt on this family than they are already experiencing. They would not have let this happen intentionally for anything. So lets quit blaming and lets start helping. God is our judge. Sparks and Willis family , just know that there are people here in Burkesville that are not pointing fingers at you and do love you and wish that this would all just be a bad dream. May God grant you comfort that only he can in this case. Stay strong and don't blame anyone. Band together as you always do and focus on Christian. He is to young to really understand now, but someday he will and what he will need most is a family that will stand behind him and love him unconditionally.

I will honor that request, and hope all others will do the same.
I wish I had words that could change things, but I don't. Just know, the community grieves with you. May you find peace after this terrible tragedy.

I very seldom look at this trash, but I knew you regular idiots would be on here placing blame. I find it hard to believe adults would be doing this. May God bless this family and bring them comfort in the days to come.
