To understand America, take a backyard history lesson

Full story: The Morning Call

The steep hills of Vicksburg still echo with the gallantry of Ulysses Grant's six-week siege, and a scent of ferocity lingers at the sloping meadows near Saratoga, where Benedict Arnold and his men saved the ...

This sort of article is what makes us all feel proud to be a part of the legacy of immigrants who decided release from foreign dominance was worth the sacrifice. The French, Spanish, Dutch, and British all came hundreds of years gone by. The difference is that the British brought women where the others returned with the treasures of the new world. The British came and settled and today we speak English.

There is a new train line between Bejing, China and Lhasa, Tibet. Each day the train has people headed on this train for Lhasa for the purpose of migration and "investment." Looks like one masterful way to destroy the Tibetan culture. In the states we have a massive 20,000,000 influx of illegal immigration. The schools of southern California are inundated with illegal children. Orange County serves two meals per day because of parents too "poor" to feed breakfast to their children. The cost of caring for so many illegal immigrants is staggering. One slogan we saw in Los Angeles was "Welcome to the United States of Mexico." Is or is not English the national language of our country? It becomes a question of concern. Unfortunately the polls claim most voters place the issue at a low priority. Do we repair the leak or abandon ship? Sure wish the politicians would take their responsibility more seriously. Are these poverty stricken uneducated illegal immigrants in America seeking the opportunity to assimilate or are they economic refugees uncaring about the history of our land? Mexican history education tells of America the evil culture that stole half of America from Mexico. "America is ours." I just wish more effort were shown by the Latino community toward adapting to America instead of making demands never considered when my non-English speaking grandparents migrated legally to Allentown. The key to acceptance and assimilation is education. This is what our forefathers did and the legacy still continues.

Has Carpenter chosen a day to take those PSSA tests he is so critical of?

I'm sure there are a lot of people who would like to see how he fares.

Paul's comments are true... "To understand America, take a backyard history lesson".... would have been nice if this article really explained that in depth... and not just the title of the article!
Paul needs to focus on his readers and write with the intention to educate, help people become aware and think.... his title of the article does that.... the information that follows does not.... how would one become a part of this organization?
When are the reinactments held? and when do these organizers meet to disucss the history of this event and plan the event.......
that would be information the readers would be interested in...
Not the fact that Paul, decided to understand a piece of PA/American history.....
just my opinion........
Have a great New Year Paul...

Where in the Constitution is government sponsorship of bicycle racing endorsed? Is that in the oft-overlooked preamble?

Just when I want to pile on for a dumb column, Mr. Carpenter gets us again. Now Mr. Carpenter, why have we never heard of anyone having to repay the illgotten gains from the illegal pay raise? Just a suggestion for a column, especially since the state(COMMONWEALTH) os going after the scam contractors.

Thank you for saying the truth about Benedict Arnold! He was the one who actually fought in the battle while General Horatio "Granny" Gates was busy worrying in his tent, yet he somehow got all the credit for winning the battle.

Carpenter did take a test in order to graduate from high school. He took the New York Boards. He might have many other problems, but passing a test would not qualify as one of them.
