Now they are talking about lowering the speed limit on Rt. 40, AS IF that would have changed the circumstances of these deaths. Unthinking Irresponsible Drivers is what caused these accidents. They killed them selves they murdered others and destroyed their families just for stupid acts of fooling around with a motor vehicular. Making a new law that only affects Law abiding people will not change anything. You can't legislate intelligence or common sense something none of these people seemed to possess

Maybe if parents stated teaching their children about consequences of their actions kids would think twice about doing stupid things. God forbid you discipline your children while they are growing up, Now I'm not saying beat your children but some times they NEED to be punished in a meaningful way, Not five minutes in the time out chair. Saying that these incidents were just unfortunate accidents is ludicrous. In most cases I'm lead to believe alcohol had little to do with the deaths so these people were Competent Adults or Young Adults That should have known Right from wrong. So that makes it Careless Stupidity, I'm sorry if that offends someone but it is the truth.
The "Adult" that fell off the cliff, He knew the cliff was there. He chose to drink and hang out by steep cliffs That is STUPID as is anyone that uses Alcohol as an excuse for their stupidity, everyone knows that alcohol make you do stupid things You choose to drink. be prepared for the consequences. IF you drive recklessly or speed around curvy roads or think You are incapable of getting hurt or hurting others YOU ARE S T U P I D. And Parents STOP listening to the Psychobabble Child rearing "experts" that say punishing your child or providing consequences for their wrong doings is stifling their personality and creativity. I would rather have a Stifled child than a DEAD one.
Stop the stupidity, and stop blaming the people that see the truth. EVERY ONE of these deaths was avoidable if the person that caused it just used their brain. Getting drunk is not an excuse nor is trying to impress your friends or girlfriend by driving fast or reckless is not and excuse. Be smart and live to be old.
By the way A deer running out in front of your car, A tire blowout, Another person hitting you. Those are accidents. Not stupidity

I just read a letter to the editor from the T/U on May 9th that contained the following lines;
"As for the people interviewed, I know there is no controlling what comes out of the mouths of others, but a comment about cleaning meat and shoelaces off of guardrails is not an image grieving people need in their minds.
Those who were on the scenes of the accidents and the first responders are already messed up enough from seeing so many brutal deaths. Why does everyone else need that image as well?"
I Think that is exactly what the people need to see and hear, They Should see graphic photos of the crash scenes, And say this is what happens to you when you act stupidly with a motor vehicle. maybe just maybe it will get them thinking before the next one DIES. Tiptoeing around the issue won't work, being sensitive won't work.

I agree wholeheartedly with Stillwater Parent, Everyone should see the images the EMT have to see Maybe then these kids will wake up and see the reality of acting without thinking

I agree with all above. I can't believe there is even a conflict on this subject. Children are dying due to stupid irresponsible acts and people are worried about hurting someones feelings??? what are you frigging fruitcakes. I'm sorry Miss Herrington lost her friends but being "sensitive" too peoples feelings won't save the dead nor will it stop others from dying. These kids are seeing their friends die then going out and doing the same stupid irresponsible things. Wake up, open your eyes and see what happens when you make irresponsible actions, You DIE or worse get someone else killed. Scared straight is better than dead any day.

Well you almost lost another idiot last night, endangering the live of rescuers sent to retrieve the pea-brain. Will you people over there ever learn? How many people have to die before these people wake up?

I once lived in an area where wrecks that produced fatalities where deposited on the front lawn of the district high school. Very effective educational tool.

I'm a student at Hoosic Valley, and I disagree with most of you. The quote about "meat and shoelaces on guardrails" is extremely insensitive, and nobody in this community needs it. We're all grieving, months after this all happened. We don't need imagery like that. We have a constant reminder every day of the effects of dangerous driving--our friends are no longer with us. If that reminder does not work in having us make safe decisions, then nothing will.

So what you are saying is we should just give up on you. Because you have not learned you still make obviously stupid choices whether driving a vehicular or swimming in the river. So what do you suggest? Just letting you die? If tough love or graphic descriptions makes one of you think and saves your life THAT is worth a few hurt feelings I would rather be insensitive then see another one of our irreplaceable youth die due to stupidity. And before anyone whine ALL of the incidents of the past few years was caused by stupidity not "unavoidable accidents"

Amen! Kids today aren't taught values or responsibility. They're spoiled brats with a sense of entitlement and no concern for their fellow man. They don't care about nothin except how they look and bullying their parents into buying them new cars and expensive phones. They've been taught they're special and everybody ought to kiss their behinds.

The general fact of the matter is that most fatal accidents happen on "regular" two-lane rural-ish highways, and NOT urban city streets NOR median-divided "freeways", and even though the latter has the highest speed limits of the three of them.

Therefore the occasional clamor to lower the speed limit on the U.S. Interstate System in the name of "safety" makes LESS sense than to do so on the rural two-laners because on the divided highways (1) at least everyone's going in the same direction - no head-on collisions possible, and (2) because they're 'limited access' highways (UNlike the Taconic) there's also no chance of colliding with someone at a perpendicular angle either.
