The City of Vallejo Human Resources Department web page has indicated an "open continuous" job opportunity posting for police officer, both entry and lateral for over two years now. In addition, a specific one-time recruitment of 5 officers was approved by the city council in late fall, posted and closed on Dec. 17, 2012. There has been no official public information from the city regarding the success or failure of the 5 officer recruitment, or the availability of officers on the Register of Eligibles derived from either vacancy announcement.
The city council and staff have been advised of the expected loss of veteran officers due to retirements over the next six months. A new contract with the police officers union is scheduled to be negotiated and acted on this summer. Many citizens believe a contract aimed at saving money will be imposed on the police officers and has impacted recruiting efforts to a negative degree. Unofficial accounts of the status of applicants for police officer indicate serious shortfalls in recruiting. Some citizens believe the one-time recruiting effort was not successful and that the city is reluctant to publicly disclose the failure. Others believe the city will be forced to address the impending serious issue of restaffing the police department at the special meeting on Monday, January 7, 2013.

If Garman and Schussel wanted to be regarded as REAL investigative journalists, they would use FOIA or whatever(ask any one of the Fab Four) to find out the REAL story on police officer recruiting efforts. But my opinion is they do not want to "ask the hard questions" in this controversy.

LOL!

We all know you fellows are illiterate, but why not have a friend (if you have any) pen your FOIA request?

Too difficult?

Since you think it's such a BIG issue, instead of wasting time posting your issues here, why don't you simply go to the CC meeting and ask the questions? It's obvious that you are either too afraid to face the Council or you are simply trying to make an issue where none exists. People do it all the time. Do you really think that anyone over at VIB will be compelled to take up YOUR issue because you post it on TOPIX? Why don't you contact Garman yourself and ask him to look into it? Better yet,I hear that Chief Kreins is open to speaking with the citizens and I'm sure he could answer your questions.

But then again, you aren't really interested in the answers are you?

Yes, I am an advocate of answers to clear things up. This issue seems very sensitive to you personally. I intend to continue to pound the drum of transparency. No reason to fear transparency, right? The next pound is with the extended media. The city better start talking, it's not our job to ask in this very serious issue. Is that light too bright for you?

And my opinion is that there is a serious dearth of applicants. That affects each and every one of is no matter what our political leanings. I can understand why Gomes and her crowd are sweating the truth. They would be pounding VPOA without end if there was an abundance of applicants we cannot afford, you know that. So wise up, everyone, we have a problem. It says so in the draft report to council from the police commission. So now we wait.

"the department is anticipating an exodus of 10-15 veteran officers over the next seven to eight months. the normal timeline for bringing new officers "on-board" varies from agency to agency with a worst case scenario of eight months. that statistic does not take into account the challenges vallejo will face in recruitment due to well publicized issues and events.

lateral candidate acquisition will be extremely problematic"

"extremely problematic", now what does that mean? Did anyone ask at the last meeting the committee had? Sounds like it has been a problem already.

Why won't sammies minions come forward and ask for the FOIA of requested information.

answer:

sammie does not know how to write the request...like his epic recall failures.

LOL!

It must be great telling other people what to do. If this is such a critical issue why dont you get off your arse and waddle down to City Hall and ask them.

Lol, getting a little edgy over this topic. We could be in the news again big time. No wonder nobody wants to bring it out into the light.
"This means war", is where it all began. "We're coming for you" continued it.
The public needs to know the truth, pronto. I am not waddling anywhere. I plan to stay right here and stir this pot, or the soup will burn.

Just like everyone says, it's obvious that you don't want any real answers. Why let something like facts get in your way? Because facts and truth would mess up your blame game. Why else would you be too scared to go to the source and ask? Bwak bwak bwak bwak....

everyone wants "real answers", "facts and truth", that's what we are owed and we are not getting it.
no one should have to go to a council meeting to ask the city manager how we are doing in officer recruiting. or if we got the 5 applicants just closed two weeks ago. there is a conspicuous absence of transparency in the area of human resources with regard to restaffing police at any cost. it all points to stephanie gomes and her big mouth, so sure all you gomes' minions want to suppress the bad news as long as you can. for what, it won't change the problem.
many of you insisted there were plenty of police officers that would apply here to work. word is that has not happened and no one knows one way or the other, so unless somebody goes to a council meeting and asks, we will be kept in the dark about it?
baloney!!
i look forward to the meeting when council is told the truth and stephanie gomes turns grey right before our eyes.

this doesn't make any sense to me. i must be dumber than i thought. what the heck is a "real" answer? how would knowing how deep the pool is for new police officers mess up a blame game? i do agree that if we do not have many interested, it is primarily due to the nasty comments from councilmember gomes and the uncertainty of the contract yet to be voted on during the summer, which will clearly be imposed to save money because we have a steady decline in revenues. we can't keep taking it out on our employees. it makes complete sense that given the uncertainty, officers are waiting it out. we can't wait that long, something needs to happen now to increase our police presence on the streets!
