Busted Vallejo pot merchant on Discovery Channel's 'Weed Country' tonight

Matt Shotwell has been raided, fined, and jailed twice. And now, televised.

Vallejo's one-time marijuana dispensary owner is again in the spotlight when "Weed Country" debuts at 7 p.m. on the Discovery Channel.

It was a year ago when Shotwell's "Greenwell Cooperative" was raided by the Vallejo police as part of a citywide crackdown on storefront dispensaries. His case is pending in Solano County Superior Court.

Unlike the cable channel's previous segment, "Weed Wars," which focused on running a medicinal cannabis business, the six episodes of "Weed Country" attempt to give equal time to those in the marijuana business and law enforcement.

A more cop-friendly, "Pot Cops," replaces "Weed Country" in April.

Shotwell, 32, isn't thinking past tonight's broadcast with a "viewing party" starting at 5 p.m. at the Rellik Tavern in downtown Benicia.

"I hope it (the segment) persuades a lot of Americans that have been kept in the dark or lied to through propaganda that 'regular' people are doing this," Shotwell said of marijuana use. "It's not hippies sitting on a couch eating granola and saying,'Hey, dude.' That's not what the industry is. There are people who do that, but there are alcoholics in the alcohol industry. The whole mission is to bring light to the cannabis movement and the medicinal and economics side of it."

Lt. Ken Weaver of the Vallejo Police Department said the Discovery Channel marijuana-related programs "have no value to the community" and are good for "entertainment purposes only."

Weaver said he would "probably not" view tonight's "Weed Country" episode.

Shotwell filmed much of what will likely be broadcast of his marijuana business, hoping for a "cannabis reality show or documentary made on how it works."

Meantime, Shotwell was introduced to two TV producers, one who worked on "The Amazing Race" and "Deadliest Catch," who combined Shotwell's story with a pot grower in Humboldt County and sold the idea to the Discovery Channel.

"It's one slice of the industry with grower and retailer and they have the cops involved as well," Shotwell said. "The network wanted the police's side and I said by all means."

Shotwell hasn't seen the final cut, though he "knows snippets because I know what I filmed and took part in. A lot of the elements I have no idea what's going to happen."

Shotwell said the federal-government endorsed dispensary raid cost him "hundreds of thousands" of dollars in product and money. He was jailed one day, posted bail, and re-arrested the next day. Shotwell served 10 days in a small cell "with another guy who was in for a DUI. Imagine that."

He said he holds no grudges against most of Vallejo's police.

"There are great cops here," Shotwell said. "There are just a few that have an ideology that motivates them to hate me. If we had a beer at a bar together, we'd probably be buddies."

Shotwell was asked how he survives without the weed income.

"That's a loaded question," he said. "God provides for me is the best answer I can give."

Tony you will be in jail very soon. Either that or in the grave. All by your own hand. You of all people are not fit to judge anyone as an idiot.

Pearsall's a damn fool spending all this money to try to beat his DUI. It's not like he was an upstanding citizen trying to save his reputation. He had already disgraced himself for having to step down as Fighting Back Partnership's Executive Director and has a shady past that has followed him through out his life.

Tony has no backbone or integrity. If he did he would man up to his problem, go get some help for it and redeem himself. Every time this point is made here Casper/Tony tries to deflect it by bringing up what he believes to be everyone else's faults.

I truly believe Tony will not beat the legal system and that he DA and Judge are giving him a run of his money, all the way to his trial where Tony will punk out and cop a plea.

guilty, he can't deflect the fact he hit two cars and ran from the first, not to mention driving on the wrong side of the street, needing help to get out of his car after plowing into the police cruiser. now that's high on something. i agree he is a monumental disgrace with a history of controversies.
